Gratitude (感激) is pwerful. I knw this isn’t the first time yu’ve been encuraged t
explre the wrd with a prmise that gratitude will enhance yur life, but when we hear smething
ften, it can seem antique. In a wrld where we’ re cnstantly lking fr what’s next, gratitude
practices seem ld-fashined. But, we knw practicing gratitude can have benefits.
One f my favurite ways t shw gratitude is t remember my life mtt: Always try t
help thers as much as yu can. In my experience, this means yu have t believe that everyne
can achieve their dreams and that if yu help a clleague succeed, yu succeed t. This means
that success isn’t abut stepping n thers t get t the tp; it’s abut wrking tgether as a
cmmunity. It als means that we can be grateful fr what we have, withut feeling jealus.
Recently, I’ve been inspired by a schlar, Sanai Graden, wh went viral fr listening t
smene in need. She ended up raising mney t help the hmeless man. “I just treat peple hw I
want t be treated,” Graden says. “I made my decisin based n the fact that it wuld nt nly
affect me, but als the peple arund me.”
That’s a key part f gratitude, and smething Graden says she centers in her career. “I dn’t
want t be the type f persn wh just gets by. I want t be the persn wh is making
cntributins and helping thers thrugh the way. I’m nt nly ging t win, but I’m taking

peple with me t win as well.”
Befre I started regularly practising gratitude, I thught it meant being happy with what I
have and nt cmplaining. This is mstly true. But nw I think that being grateful als includes
hw we apprach every part f ur lives, and hw we use it t help us grw.
24.Which statement will the authr prbably agree with?
A.Gratitude practices are ld-fashined.
B.Oppnents can prevent us frm succeeding.
C.Supprting thers is a way f expressing gratitude.
D.Success means helping thers realize their dreams.
25.Why is Sanai Graden mentined in the text?
A.T illustrate why peple help the hmeless.
B.T make a cmparisn with ther peple’s ideas.
C.T explain hw t becme a celebrity vernight.
D.T be used as an example f practicing gratitude.
26.What des Sanai Graden fcus n in her career?
A.Staying alive. B.Being a helper. C.Being a leader. D.Getting the win.
27.What might be the mst suitable title fr the text?
A.Getting t the Tp t Get Success. B.Gratitude: Being Cntent with Life.
C.The Pwer f Gratitude in Actin. D.Success: Affecting Others Arund Yu.

Science shuld guide plicy, but cautin is needed when technlgies like CRISPR have
the ptential t exclude rather than assist peple t live their lives.
CRISPR can be used t treat disease. Yet the far-reaching, mre wrrying prmise f this
technlgy — ne abut which scientists seem at nce excited and cautius — lies in its ability
t eliminate frm the gene pl what medical science identifies as faulty r abnrmal genes that
cause difference in individual peple. Certainly, ges the lgic f CRISPR’s prmise, the gal f
ridding future generatins f terrible diseases that cause suffering and death and exhaust resurces,
seems an unquestinable enterprise.
This lgic is cnsistent with wider scietal views. The idea that ridding sciety f genetic
differences that cunt as defect is an undeniable “gd” cntinues t be pervasive. Editing ut a gene-linked cnditin, supprters may argue, is different frm editing ut a persn, and curing
disease is a gd thing. But ur genetic cnditins are nt simply entities that can be clipped away
frm us and ur genetic cnditins frm a fundamental part f wh we are.
Using genme manipulatin tls and perfrming genetic selectin is equal t a new frm
f eugenic thinking grunded in what the cmmunicatins studies schlar James L. Chemey calls
“cmmn sense” ableism, a belief system that allws peple t simultaneusly deny any
cmmitment t distasteful eugenic principles while als hlding them up. Ultimately, “cmmn
sense” ableism embdies a similar gal f cleansing unacceptable human variatins that the
campaigns t eliminate the suppsedly inferir have held in the past.
Peple with “bad” genes shuldn’t be edited ut f existence in sme versin f a utpian
future. Evaluating the quality f life f anther persn is mrally questinable in a sciety based
n the cncept that all peple are f equal value regardless f their individual differences.
Expanding diversity in all its frms, including disability, strengthens the human cmmunity

ethically and bilgically because it pens the public and private sphere t a variety f
perspectives, experiences and ideas t live tgether with mutual flurishing.
Genme editing is pwerful in reshaping medical treatments, but it can als be harmful by
editing ut the kinds f peple that medical science, and the sciety it has shaped, categrize as
diseased r genetically cntaminated — peple wh are understd as having bad genes. We
shuld be reminded that bad genes dn’t necessarily lead t bad lives, just as gd genes dn’t
necessarily lead t gd lives. If CRISPR is put t use t eliminate rather than t treat genetic
difference, we as a sciety wuld essentially instrumentalize this mralistic and reductinist
assumptin.
28.Accrding t the passage, which f the fllwing best describes the authr’s view n the use
f CRISPR t eliminate genetic defects?
A.The authr fully supprts the use f CRISPR fr the betterment f human health.
B.The authr is cncerned abut the ptential misuse f CRISPR t exclude individuals with
genetic differences.
C.The authr believes that CRISPR shuld nly be used fr treating severe diseases with clear
genetic causes.
D.The authr argues that CRISPR technlgy is inherently flawed and shuld nt be used at all.
29.What can be inferred frm the authr’s discussin abut “cmmn sense” ableism?
A.The authr believes that ableism is a ratinal apprach t genetic diversity.
B.The authr suggests that “cmmn sense” ableism is a subtle frm f discriminatin that is
widely accepted.
C.The authr thinks that “cmmn sense” ableism is a new cncept intrduced by James L.
Chemey.
D.The authr argues that “cmmn sense” ableism is a psitive develpment in the field f
genetics.
30.The authr emplys the term “utpian future” t describe a sciety that edits ut “bad” genes.
What is the rhetrical effect f this term?
A.It evkes a sense f idealism and prgress in genetic engineering.
B.It highlights the ptential dangers f verreaching in genetic mdificatin.
C.It suggests that such a future is impssible and therefre nt wrth discussing.
D.It emphasizes the authr’s supprt fr a future free f genetic diseases.
31.What is the main argument f the passage?
A.CRISPR technlgy has the ptential t cause mre harm than gd if nt used cautiusly.
B.Genetic diversity shuld be preserved because it enriches sciety ethically and bilgically.
C.The scietal view that genetic defects shuld be eliminated is mrally and ethically flawed.
D.The use f CRISPR t treat diseases is a clear and unquestinable gd.

A large U.S. study fund that lder adults wh drink cffee — whether caffeinated r
decaffeinated — tend t have a lwer risk f death cmpared t nn-cffee drinkers. The
research, led by scientists frm the Natinal Institutes f Health, bserved a reduced risk f death
frm heart disease, strke, diabetes, infectins, and ther causes, thugh n clear link was fund
with cancer-related deaths.
第 5 页,共 10 页
The study fllwed 400,000 adults aged 50-71 ver 13 years. Participants reprted their
cffee habits nce at the start f the study. Results shwed that thse wh drank three r mre
cups daily had abut a 10% lwer risk f death than nn-drinkers. This assciatin remained even
after adjusting fr factrs like smking and diet. Hwever, researchers cautined that the findings
d nt prve cffee directly extends lifespan.
“Cffee is widely cnsumed, but its health effects have been debated,” said Dr. Neal
Freedman, lead authr f the study. “While we can’t cnfirm cffee causes a lnger life, these
results strngly indicate it isn’t harmful and might even be beneficial.”
Ntably, the type f caffeine (caffeinated vs. decaf) mattered little, implying that ther
cmpunds in cffee — e.g. antixidants — might play a rle. Cffee cntains ver 1,000
chemicals, many f which culd influence health.
Of curse, the study has limitatins. Cffee intake was self-reprted nly nce, and
preparatin methds were nt analyzed. Differences in brewing might affect the health prperties
f cffee. Additinally, while cffee was linked t lwer verall death risk, men wh drank large
amunts shwed a slight increase in cancer deaths, thugh this was nt strngly cnclusive.
Experts emphasize that lifestyle factrs matter. Cffee drinkers may have shared ther
healthy habits. “This desn’t mean everyne shuld start drinking cffee,” said Freedman. “But it
ffers reassurance that mderate cnsumptin is likely safe.”
Published in the New England Jurnal f Medicine in 2012, this research adds t evidence
that cffee, when enjyed in mderatin, culd be a cmpnent f healthy lifestyle. Future studies
will explre hw specific cmpunds in cffee interact with the bdy.
32.What n earth plays a crucial rle in cffee drinkers’ living lnger?
A.The type f caffeine (regular r decaf). B.The brewing methds used in the study.
C.Cffee drinkers’ healthier life habits. D.Antixidants and ther cmpunds in cffee.
33.What can we learn frm the study n cffee drinking?
A.The Study cnfirms cffee directly extends lifespan.
B.Mre studies are still needed t cnfirm the finding.
C.Drinking cffee reduces the risk f cancer-related deaths.
D.The study cnducted natinwide cvered all age grups.
34.What attitude shuld we take twards the research findings?
A.Largely dismissive. B.Cmpletely cnvinced.
C.Uncritically enthusiastic. D.Cautiusly ptimistic.
35.Which f the fllwing culd be the best title fr the article?
A.Cffee Linked t Lwer Death Risk B.Cffee Can Extend Lifespan Directly
C.Decaf Cffee Has Been Prved Healthier D.New Study Cnfirms Cffee Cures

During breaks, they ften chase and kick balls in narrw crridrs, with balls ften
bumping int drs, windws r even smene nearby. Such behavir is bth disruptive and

craned my neck t see her standing at the tp f the valley, barking ludly. She was trying t get
smene’s attentin. My heart sared with hpe. Maybe she culd lead smene t me.
Bang! The nise wke me up; I culd recgnize it was my neighbr, Rbin! “Help!” I
screamed. “I’m here! Dwn in the valley!” Rbin peered ver the edge and his eyes widened in
hrrr at the sight f my verturned car. “Dn’t wrry, I’ll get help!” he yelled befre rushing
back t his huse. Rbin had called the emergency services and they were finally able t lcate me

I clung t Hney, tears streaming dwn my face. I knew I had her t thank fr my rescue. She had
