Yu’re in a quiet rm, trying t cncentrate n yur hmewrk r a reprt. But in spite f yur effrts t fcus, a little part f a sng keeps playing in yur head, ver and ver again. Why des this happen?
Scientists suggest that this phenmenn, knwn as an ear wrm, may result frm the brain’s respnse t the lack f music. When we desire music but can’t hear it, ur brains may generate their wn meldies (旋律), resulting in an ear wrm.
Studies shw that sngs yu hear ften r recently are mre likely t becme ear wrms. In ne experiment, scientists played a new sng fr peple either tw r six times. Over the next three days, they asked these peple if the sng was stuck in their heads. The result? Abut ne-third f them said yes. Als, peple wh heard the sng 6 times were mre likely t get ear-wrms, especially the day right after they heard it.
Once an ear-wrm is in yur head, it des mre than just anny—it enters a part f ur cgnitive (认知的) architecture knwn as wrking memry. Researchers fund that if a sng is stuck in peple’s head, when they perfrm tasks designed t test their wrking memry, they perfrm less crrectly at memrizing infrmatin. This is because the presence f an ear wrm crwds ut ther infrmatin in wrking memry. The mre familiar the sng is, the mre it gets in the way f yur fcus.
But there’s a simple way t fight ear wrms: chewing gum. Why? Because ear wrms use yur “inner vice”—which means using the thrat t say wrds silently. By using the same thrat muscles while chewing gum, we may break the repeating ear wrms just enugh t make them fade away. S next time a sng wn’t leave yur head, give gum a try!
32. What can we learn abut an ear wrm frm Paragraph 2?
A. It is a serius brain disease.
B. It helps peple better enjy music.
C. It appears when peple dislike a meldy.
D. It results frm the brain’s reactin t missing music.
33. What negative influence may an ear wrm bring abut?
A. It weakens the wrking memry perfrmance.
B. It damages the physical health f peple’s brains.
C. It makes peple lse interest in music cmpletely.
D. It prevents peple frm listening t familiar sngs.
34. Why des chewing gum help peple remve an ear wrm?
A. It calms dwn peple’s anxius feelings.
B. It uses the same thrat muscles t stp repeats.
C. It helps peple fcus n difficult hmewrk and reprts.
D. It activates a new part f the brain t replace ld memries.
35. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
A. The Bad Effects f Ppular Sngs.
B. Why Sngs Gets Stuck in Yur Head?
C. Hw Our Brains Create Beautiful Meldies?
D. Useful Ways t Imprve Yur Cncentratin.

The Warmth in the Heavy Snw
