Fr years, the 3:00 PM schl pickup was nt a jyful reunin, but a cnstant exercise in emtinal strength. It was a rutine f small hpes quietly disappearing. Every single day, as my 11 - year - ld sn, Le, buckled his seat - belt, I wuld ffer the same cheerful, practiced query: "Hw was yur day?"
And every single day, fr years, the respnse was a carbn cpy: "Fine, fine." It was always delivered t the dashbard, t the windw, t anywhere but me. N eye cntact. N change in his vice. His autism(自闭症) created a srt f glass wall between us. Thrugh it, I culd see my by, but I culd never quite feel him reach back. The easy, simple talk that ther parents seem t enjy withut a secnd thught felt like a dream. I felt like I was puring years f lve int an empty space, my cnstant effrts met with a peaceful, yet heartbreaking, apathy. I had quietly begun t accept that this silent barrier was simply ur frever.
But that early spring afternn was unusual. I asked the same questin, expecting nthing. "Hw was yur day, Le?"
He buckled his belt. "Gd, gd," he said. A change frm the script, but I barely had time t register it.
Then, he turned. Fr the first time in what felt like a lifetime, Le lked directly at me. His eyes were clear, fcused, and present. "Hw was yur day, Mm?"
The wrld seemed t stp spinning. The simple questin - that tiny bridge he had built all n his wn frm his wrld t mine - was the mst beautiful thing I had ever heard. Yu may have heard that kale(羽衣甘蓝) is the "queen f greens", laded with essential nutrients like calcium, irn, and vitamins A, C, and K. It is als a rich surce f cartenids - plant - based cmpunds that act as antixidants(抗氧化剂) t supprt eye and skin health. Hwever, getting the benefits f this super fd is nt as simple as eating it plain. Accrding t a study published in Fd Nutritin, the way yu prepare this leafy green determines hw well its nutrients are absrbed.
The study investigated the impact f varius cking strategies by using a simulated mdel f the human digestive system. Researchers cmpared the absrptin f nutrients when kale was eaten alne versus when it was dressed with a simple mixture f live il and water. The results were clear: nutrients are much better absrbed when kale is paired with fat, whether the vegetable is raw r cked.
"Kale cntains many fat - dependent nutrients," explains study cauthr Rujie Vanessa Zhang. "But they d nt disslve well in the watery stmach envirnment when kale is eaten alne." When live il is added, it frms tiny particles called "mixed micelles" during digestin. These particles act like tiny vehicles, carrying cartenids acrss the gut wall. Withut these fat drplets, the nutrients remain trapped, leading t limited absrptin.
T unlck these "trapped" nutrients, preparatin is key. David Julian McClements, a prfessr f fd science, suggests "massaging" kale with live il. This prcess helps break dwn cell walls, leading t what experts call a "jail break" fr nutrients. While live il is a ppular chice, ther healthy fats like avcad, nuts, r canla il can als d the trick.
Ultimately, the best way t eat kale is the way yu enjy it mst. Whether yu blend it int a smthie, stir - fry it, r tss it int a sup, remember the glden rule: kale needs a little fat t shine.
28. Which aspect f the study des paragraph 2 mainly talk abut?
A. Its bjective.B. Its influence.C. Its backgrund.D. Its prcedure.
29. Why shuld we eat kale with il accrding t Rujie Vanessa Zhang?
A. T imprve its taste.B. T get mre nutrients.
C. T trap the water inside.D. T prtect the stmach.
30. Which f the fllwing best describes the "jail break" prcess in paragraph 4?
A. Optinal.B. Theretical.C. Essential.D. Cntrversial.
31. What's the authr's main purpse in writing the text?
A. T advcate fr a balanced diet t preserve natural health.
B. T ffer scientific guidance n maximizing kale's benefits.
C. T reveal the crucial rle f fat in kale nutrient absrptin.
D. T clarify a cmmn miscnceptin abut kale's nutritin.

Grief can bring waves f heartache—but fr mst peple, thse feelings gradually fade. Fr sme, they dn't. The lss remains intense, persistent, and difficult t handle in daily life. This cnditin, knwn as prlnged grief disrder(PGD), was added t the Diagnstic and Statistical Manual f Mental Disrders 5(DSM-5) in 2022.
"There's smething blcking their ability t finally say, 'I have t accept this,'" says Katherine Shear, directr f the Center fr Prlnged Grief at Clumbia University. Researchers are nw beginning t understand why. PGD may invlve breakdwns in the brain systems that gvern attachment and reward, accrding t a 2026 study published in Trends in Neursciences. In peple with prlnged grief, thse systems may cntinue t signal that the lst lved ne is still expected, creating a cnflict between memry and reality.
PGD is a "lng-term, intense, painful reactin t lss," says Hlly Prigersn at Weill Crnell Medicine. Individuals remain "stuck", marked by persistent yearning and nt accepting the reality f the lss. Grief is cnsidered PGD when symptms last lnger than 12 mnths.
Hw des it affect the brain? Regins invlved in reward and mtivatin appear t remain active. "Peple with severe grief are still expecting the existence f what is gne, making it harder fr the brain t update and accept the lss," says Shear. Research published in 2020 als fund that PGD invlves different activity patterns in the amygdala(大脑杏仁核).
PGD can lead t a higher risk f death. One explanatin is that prlnged grief keeps the bdy in a lasting stress respnse. High levels f crtisl can hurt the heart system and interfere with immune functin.
The mst cmmn treatment is Prlnged Grief Therapy. "The treatment fcuses n helping peple accept the reality f the lss and restre their capacity fr well-being, but frmal recgnitin f PGD is crucial, as it ensures accurate diagnsis and effective treatment fr thse stuck in this disabling experience," Shear explains.
32. What is PGD accrding t the text?
A. Grief that can't be treated.
B. Grief that brings heartaches.
C. Grief that cmes frm great lss.
D. Grief that desn't ease with time.
33. What des the study published in 2026 mainly fcus n?
A. Wh PGD affects.B. What PGD brings.C. Hw PGD wrks.D. Why PGD spreads.
34. Hw des PGD affect humans accrding t Katherine Shear?
A. It disturbs brain functins.B. It reduces memry activity.
C. It weakens immune system.D. It shrtens peple's lifetime.
35. What can be inferred frm the last paragraph?
A. Official identificatin f PGD leads t better medical help.
B. Well-being can be recvered with shrt-term PGD therapy.
C. Reality acceptance f the lss is the main gal f curing PG
D.
D. Recgnitin f PGD largely relies n patients' self-awareness.
