As a Ph.D. student, I lved standing in the rain, measuring hw water drps mve int the sil. I lved the utdrs, and was endlessly curius abut what I saw in the field and thrilled t cnnect it t what I read. My ideas seemed t flw like the stream.

Later, I mved t a new university and returned t my Ph.D. research. I fund that if I culd be in the mment with my students and act as a sunding bard fr new ideas — and nt be distracted by my mid-career respnsibilities — then I culd play a part in their creative thinking. Gradually, creativity crept back thugh I hadn’t yet fund hw t spark my deep thinking.
Anther decade passed befre I accepted a psitin in my hmetwn. During several mnths between jbs, I was free as a bird. One day at a gym, watching the rain fall and puddles (小水坑) frm and calesce (合并) utside, I suddenly was able t visualize similar prcesses that I had been trying t understand, a thught I wrried had permanently dried up. It hit me that I needed t slw dwn and experience the rain mre ften! Frm then n, I’d think and write in the mrning, in a rm verlking a river r cycle alng banks, which helped me prcess new ideas and stay curius.
I nw encurage my students t discnnect and take time ut t think, t play, t have fun with their research. I tell them t make it a permanent habit and seek the cnditins and places that fster curisity and ability t think deeply. I hpe the next generatin avids lsing it alng the way, as I did.

Peple pursuing perfectin and thse valuing being n time ften dn’t see eye t eye in the wrkplace. But accrding t a recent study, it is better t deliver a gd-enugh prject n schedule rather than perfecting it thrugh prcrastinatin.
Researchers surveyed thusands f peple in the U.S. and U.K, including managers and thers whse jbs included evaluating thers. They presented participants with the same examples f wrk, and then asked them t rate it. But first, they mentined whether it was either submitted early, right at the deadline r late.
Participants wh were tld it was late cnsistently rated the wrk as wrse in quality than thse wh were tld the same wrk was early r n time. The study als fund there wasn’t much benefit t submitting wrk early since evaluatrs tended t rank wrk submitted befre and at the deadline as the same quality. Furthermre, it didn’t matter hw late the wrk was submitted, with ne day r ne week delays viewed just as negatively and that remained the case if the emplyee gave their manager advance warning.
A field experiment was cnducted in a high schl in China that had students grade pieces f art in a staged cntest. The art was n a piece f paper that als included the date it was submitted. Even thugh the kids were tld t ignre all ther details n the paper ther than the art itself, the wrks submitted after the deadline received lwer grades. That study made the brader pint that it didn’t really matter wh set the deadline. In the eyes f the evaluatr, any miss was a meaningful miss.
Hwever, the reasn behind the missed deadline mattered, researchers fund. If it was due t frces beynd an emplyee’s cntrl, evaluatrs didn’t end up with as negative a view f the wrk as they did when the reasn was ne within their cntrl. “If the reasn why yu missed the deadline was beynd yur cntrl, yu as the emplyee shuld let yur manager knw,” Magli says. “That seems t be ne f the few situatins in which peple cut yu a break.”

When yu lg int scial media, des an algrithm ( 算法) gvern yur feed? When shpping nline, d yu ften fcus n tp-listed, AI-suggested items? If yu answer “Yes”, mst f the time, yu g alng with what the algrithm recmmends. 36 As the name suggests, the term refers t ur grwing tendency t utsurce decisins t systems designed t predict and cntrl ur behavir.

Fr example, when yu’re n YuTube, autplay ges t anther vide. 39 Yu clse the app and g fr a walk instead, fllwing yur inner vice ver autmatin.
T be human is t chse. It is t exercise the human capacity fr intentinal actin, the ability we have been given t be the authrs f ur wn lives. As AI becmes mre integrated in ur lives, we must actively preserve ur decisin-making capacities. 40
      A. That is hw we remain human.
      B. It may even dull ur sense f self.
      C. S, it’s time t reclaim human agency.
      D. The aim f this questin is t stay pen t algrithm.
      E. Psychlgists term this cmmn practice “algrithmic dependence” .
      F. An algrithm is a set f defined rules yu fllw t get a specific result.
