Taylr and her classmates were transprted by a virtual reality (VR) headset t a 45 250 miles away. Fr students, the technlgy means field trips are n lnger limited by the length f a bus ride. “I was nt expecting it t be right in my face!” That’s what Taylr said after taking ff the headset and finding herself back in the classrm.
On any schl day, students can take virtual reality “trips”. They can enjy deep-sea diving. They can 46 peratins in hspitals. They can visit the Science Museum in Lndn. Teachers say it’s a gd way t invlve the iPhne generatin in classrm learning and it can help with their 47 and imprve their grades. Clin Jnes, a science teacher, has walked students thrugh the nrthern frest with a Ggle app called Expeditins (探险/远征). “It can be dne in a perid r tw with the help f the new technlgy,” he said. “But smetimes it culd take even a week t take a 48 expeditin.”
“It’s different frm watching vides. Yu can actually mve,” Taylr said during the lessn n farm animals. “Nt nly mve, yu can feel as well,” said Richard Lamb. He studies hw brains deal with infrmatin. “Yur physilgical (生理的) reactins in virtual reality are similar t what yu get in ding the actual activity.” Lamb said. “Heart rate, breathing... everything.”
Jhn Miller, a chemistry teacher, 49 believes VR technlgy prvides students with a huge learning pprtunity. “Students did smething wrng in their chemistry experiments t ften in schls, but we dn’t have enugh materials fr them t red the experiments. In virtual reality, all they d is t hit ‘reset’ n the cmputer. They dn’t have t actually use the chemicals in the lab.”
Miller and sme ther experts stressed that the technlgy culd help students 50 real-wrld experiences instead f replacing them. “We have t remain anchred (立足) in the wrld we are living in.”

Why Des Our Breath “Smke” in Winter?
Every winter, when we breathe ut, we can see a puff f white “smke”. But in summer, n matter hw hard we breathe ut, we can never see it. This white “smke” is nt water vapr (水蒸气), and it’s definitely nt magic. It’s tiny ice crystals (冰晶) r small water drplets (水滴) made frm the water vapr in the air.
T understand this p 51 , we first need t remember a small fact: the air we breathe ut has a lt f water vapr in it. It’s just like the wet air flating in the bathrm after a shwer—we can’t see it nrmally, but it “shws up” when the temperature c 52 . In winter, the utdr temperature is very lw (fr example, belw 0℃). Our warm breath (it’s abut 37℃, almst the same as ur bdy temperature) hits the cld air. It’s just like puring ht sup int ice water—it c 53 dwn in a secnd.
Water vapr “grups tgether” when it gets cld. If the temperature drps quickly t abve 0°C, the water vapr turns int tiny water drplets. When these small drplets gather, they f 54 the white “smke” we see. If the temperature is belw 0℃, the water vapr turns d 55 int even smaller ice crystals. It still lks like a white puff, but it’s actually made f small ice pieces.
In summer, the temperature is high, s there’s n cld air. The water vapr can’t turn int drplets r ice, s we n 56 can’t see the “smke”.
But there’s a small exceptin: in winter, if yu’re in a warm rm with a heater, it’s als hard t see the “smke” when yu breathe ut. That’s because the i 57 temperature is high, and the difference between the indr temperature and yur breath is small. The water vapr desn’t get a chance t “grup tgether”. This interesting phenmenn nly happens when the temperature difference between indrs and utdrs is large, r when it’s cld enugh utside.
Next time yu see yur “smky” breath in winter, try walking fast fr a few steps. Yu’ll find that the “smke” seems t get mre! That’s because when yu exercise, yu breathe faster, and yu breathe ut mre water vapr.
