On a cld and wet evening in suth Lndn, a grup f runners are ding smething a little different. There are n exercise machines r gym mirrrs in sight. Instead, they're mving earth, clearing weeds, and smiling thrugh the mud n a garden. Their warm-up was a ne-mile jg thrugh the city t get there.
This is GdGym in actin. It's a grwing mvement that's redefining what it means t wrk ut. The rganizatin invites peple t "get fit by ding gd", blending physical activity with hands-n cmmunity service. Members run, walk, r cycle t lcal prjects that culd range frm srting cans at a fd bank, planting fruit trees, visiting an lder adult, r mving furniture fr smene in need.
The idea began back in 2007 when funder Iv Grmley started running t deliver a newspaper t an elderly neighbr. At the time, he was feeling ut f shape and missed the friendship f his ld basketball team.
"I just didn't like that idea f ging t a gym, ging int a basement and lifting things that dn't really need lifting," Grmley said. "I thught I culd d smething mre useful in my exercise."
He started rganizing runs t places in need f helping hands. The very first grup tre dwn utdated psters in his east Lndn neighbrhd. Since then, GdGym has grwn int a registered charity with ver 26, 000 members in 67 lcatins. Nw it's aiming t expand int Sctland and Nrthern Ireland.
Thugh few ther rganizatins blend exercise and vlunteering in quite the same way, Grmley believes the cncept taps int smething timeless. "It's what peple have always dne, right?" he said. "Yu grw sme fd literally thrugh the actin f planting and digging. That's where yur exercise cmes frm."
      24. Why des the authr describe the runners wrking n a garden?
      A. T applaud their effrts. B. T describe a tugh task.

      26. What inspired Grmley t start the rganizatin?

      C. Influences frm ther runners. D. His reflectin n wrkuts.
      27. What des Grmley imply abut GdGym in the last paragraph?

      B. It highlights the benefits f physical labr.
      C. It fills the gap in traditinal physical training.
      D. It acts as an ideal alternative fr mdern gyms.
      C
Mst f us lve natural things: the taste f raw fruits and vegetables, the warmth f the sun n ur skin, etc.
Often, we're given a chice between certain things - such as fds, medicines r prcedures - that are cnsidered natural, and alternatives that are cnsidered synthetic r artificial, where the term "natural" refers t the absence f any frm f human interventin. Here, t, the affinity fr nature might help us sme f the time. But it can als badly lead us in the wrng way.
It seems that many f us have a tendency tward natural-is-better thinking. A recent research shws that peple rutinely demnstrate a naturalness bias. That is, they exhibit a fndness fr natural ptins even when thse ptins are nt bjectively better. Fr instance, in ne study, participants tended t perceive cigarettes as less harmful if they were labelled "natural", even thugh research des nt supprt that perceptin. In anther study, it was fund that the majrity f participants preferred a natural drug fr treatment - and abut 20% t 30% preferred it even when it was said t be less safe r less effective than a synthetic alternative.
The naturalness bias culd lead t risky chices. Peple might needlessly pay mre fr the same kind f prduct when it's described as "natural". Smene might eat mre f a fd that's high in fat and sugar just because it's cnsidered natural and therefre perceived as healthier. Furthermre, naturalness bias may reduce peple's willingness t fllw medical experts' advice n vaccines and ther treatments.
Encuragingly, thugh, keeping in mind the naturalness bias and discussing it with thers may help prevent it when making decisins. It may nt matter much whether yu uncnsciusly prefer an verpriced "natural" cleaning prduct. Yet it culd matter greatly if yur lved ne is thinking f replacing synthetic treatment with suppsedly "natural" ne. In cases like these, putting in the time t read reliable surces and speak with qualified experts can help pint t a decisin that's based n data, rather than a deceptively simple label.
      28. What des the underlined wrd "affinity" in paragraph 2 mean?
      A. Respect. B. Demand. C. Curisity. D.Preference.
      29. Which f the fllwing is a typical example f "naturalness bias"?
      A. Aviding pre-prepared fd. B. Rejecting all synthetic medicine.
      C. Enjying natural light t get vitamins. D. Chsing rganic apples fr better tastes.
      30. What des the authr think f "naturalness bias"?
      A. Unexpected. B. Uncmmn. C. Misleading. D.Misunderstd.
      31. What is the main purpse f the last paragraph?
      A. T call fr mre attentin. B. T ffer practical advice.
      C. T shw the risks f naturalness bias. D. T cmpare different situatins.
      D
WE MAY have been missing signals frm intelligent aliens because f slar wind. Researchers frm the Search fr Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SET) Institute say this means we have been watching fr the wrng type f signal, ptentially failing t spt prmising evidence f alien life, but the chances f a future discvery are nw higher.
The nt-fr-prfit rganisatin carries ut research t help prve the existence f alien life, which includes listening fr radi signals frm uter space that cannt be explained by natural csmlgical phenmena.
Such a signal was previusly expected t be a sharp, distinct radi signal in a narrw frequency range. But the new research suggests that any such signals sent frm distant planets may end up being made fainter and wider in the frequency band - essentially blurred slightly - as they pass thrugh the stellar winds f stars.
Vishal Gajar and Grayce Brwn at the SETI Institute calculated the scale f the effect n radi transmissins frm spacecraft in ur wn slar system, and then extraplated that t ther stellar envirnments. They fund that a 100-megahertz signal culd be widened as much as 100 hertz - enugh t "fall belw traditinal detectin threshlds". A space weather event can similarly increase the amunt f bradening experienced by a signal t a significant degree.
Jhn Ellitt at the University f St Andrews, UK, says he sees the news as the glass being half-full, nt half-empty: it means previus searches may have missed evidence, but als means that future searches will be mre likely t succeed, "It's ver 50 years that we've been actively searching and that's a blink f the eye, isn't it, when yu think abut it,"says Ellit.
      32. Why have researchers pssibly failed t receive signals frm intelligent aliens?
      A. The signals cannt reach the Earth.
      B. Their equipment was nt advanced enugh.
      C. The signals did nt appear in the expected frm.
      D. Space weather events prevented the signal traveling.
      33. Hw is the alien signal affected by the stellar winds f stars?
(nte:Plts shw relative changes in signal width and strength, nt abslute values.)
      34. What des paragraph 4 mainly talk abut?
      A. Hw the new findings were reached.
      B. Hw spacecraft send radi signals.
      C. What affects radi signal transmissin.
      D. What helped researchers make prgress
      35. Which statement des Jhn Elitt prbably agree with?
      A. Much prgress has been made s far. B. Future discveries will be fruitful.
      C. Previus searches wasted a lt f time. D. Fifty years is t lng fr alien hunting.
