Like a lt f Canadians, Andrew Subch grew up knwing little abut Canada’s natinal game — lacrsse(曲棍球), ther than watching sme neighburs pass a ball using ld wden sticks.
It was nly when his tw children started playing the game as part f their training fr hckey (冰球) that he tk much ntice. His sn, Jack, went n t excel at lacrsse and he nw plays fr the Vancuver Warrirs f the Natinal Lacrsse League.
Bth children came up thrugh the Mimic Minr Lacrsse rganizatin, in the Trnt area, which has been arund since 1890. When the number f players in the kids’ league began falling in 2014, Mr. Subch, wh is a persnal injury lawyer in Trnt, vlunteered t step in. He ffered t spnsr the “Baby Peanut” prgram, which intrduced children ages 3 and 4 t the game.
Thanks t his spnsrship, mre than 100 children play fr free each spring fr eight weeks. They spend an hur every Saturday learning the game and every player is given a lightweight stick and a shirt. “They are taught t catch, thrw, pass and sht in a nn-cntact envirnment,” he said. “Yu get them running arund. Get them away frm the screen. It is ur natinal game, s yu get them expsed. And sure enugh, they caught n.”
T fund the prgram, Mr. Subch came up with a nvel idea. He started searching his neighburhd fr used appliances, metal and electrnic items, such as cmputers and cellphnes. He srted the material and sld it t a lcal recycling centre. “Wrd has gtten ut, s peple nw will give me their used electrnics and metal stuff,” he said. The recycling effrt raises arund $20,000 annually, which cvers the cst f the lacrsse prgram.
