Dian Fssey arrived in Rwanda’s misty muntains in 1967. With n frmal scientific training, she develped an unusual apprach t studying grillas: integratin, seeking t bridge the divide between humans and the animals. This meant patiently cpying their behavir- chewing wild grass, making deep sunds, and even mving n all furs- until the grillas gradually accepted her presence. In time, the animals she apprached were n lnger seen as fierce, but instead revealed their gentle and scial nature.
But the paradise Fssey fund was under threat. Illegal hunters, armed with arrws and traps, pushed deeper int the frest. In 1978, a yung grilla named Digit, whm she had knwn since it was brn, was killed. A prfund and persnal srrw seemed t harden her reslve. Her fcus shifted decisively frm bservatin t direct actin. Fssey’s battle against illegal hunting cnsumed her life. She began capturing and questining illegal hunters, burning dwn their camps, and pretending t use black magic t make lcals believe she was a witch. Her intense methds created tensin with thers wh preferred turism and educatin as a way t prtect the grillas.
Fssey saw turism as a direct threat. Islated at her research center, she grew mre cnvinced that nly direct actin culd save the grillas. This earned her many enemies. On December 26, 1985, her lnely struggle ended in vilence. She was fund murdered in her cabin. The crime was never slved-many believe it was linked t illegal hunting, smuggling (走私), r cnflicts ver land and mney. As her frmer assistant said, she was “standing in the way f certain individuals making mney”.
She was buried beside her grilla friends like Digit, and her legacy lives n in these muntains. Thugh she did nt live t see it, her fierce devtin inspired a glbal mvement that saved the species frm extinctin.
      24. Why did Fssey imitate grillas’ behavir?
      A. T study their eating habit.B. T prve grillas were gentle creatures.
      C. T gain grillas’ trust.D. T feel mre cmfrtable in jungle.
      25. What directly caused Fssey’s change in prtectin methds?
      A. The death f a grilla clse t her.B. Tragedy in her persnal life.
      C. Her desire t gain lcal recgnitin.D. Disagreements with turism supprters.
      26. Which f the fllwing best describes Fssey’s strategy?
      A. A direct slutin t grilla extinctin.B. A scientific and cperative mdel.
      C. A universally accepted apprach.D. A great success at a persnal cst.
      27. What kind f persn was Dian Fssey?
      A. Gentle and cperative.B. Determined and extreme.
      C. Curius and humrus.D. Cautius and passive.

A wildfire burns in the hills f a Ls Angeles suburb, leaping frm ne dry bush t anther. As it appraches the first huse, the plants arund it catch fire, but the huse itself stubbrnly refuses t d s: any small flames alng its walls quickly die ut. There’s n water in sight — the flames are put ut by sund waves.
This scene is nt science fictin. Engineers at an American tech cmpany built a device using lw-frequency sund waves t fight fires. “It’s basically vibrating (震动) the xygen faster than the fuel can use it, blcking the chemical reactin,” explains Geff Bruder, an aerspace engineer wh nce studied heat engines fr NASA.
Fire needs heat, fuel and xygen; taking ne f these away will stp the fire. Sund waves push xygen away frm the fuel, preventing the fire getting the air it needs t cntinue its burning. The cmpany has demnstrated a fire cntrl frm as far as 25 feet away.
Using sund against fire isn’t new. A U.S. defense research agency studied it ver a decade ag. Hwever, a majr challenge is t scale up the technlgy withut creating lud r even damaging sund effects.
The cmpany vercame this by using infrasund-sund waves at 20 hertz (赫兹) r lwer, which humans cannt hear. These waves als travel farther than higher-frequency sunds. The device lks like a metal bx attached t the rf. When heat sensrs detect a flame, an electric mtr drives a pistn (活塞) t create infrasund, which travels thrugh metal tubes n the rf, creating a “frce field” t put ut the fire and prevent the building catching anther fire.
Experts nte that while sund waves can effectively influence fire, they currently wrk best n smaller flames. Nevertheless, hmewners and large energy cmpanies are game t give it a try. The cmpany is wrking with tw Califrnia pwer suppliers and plans t install fifty pilt units early in 2026.
      28. What des the passage begin with?
      A. A histrical review.B. A persnal anecdte.
      C. A scientific explanatin.D. A descriptive situatin.
      29. What is the cre principle behind sund-based firefighting?
      A. It separates xygen frm the fuel.B. It cls the fire with vibratins.
      C. It remves the burning material.D. It blcks the heat with natural frce.
      30. Which f the fllwing best describes a key feature f infrasund?
      A. It travels at a fast speed.B. It is f high-frequency.
      C. It is silent t human ear.D. It requires lud vlumes.
      31. What des “game” prbably refer t in paragraph 6?
      A. Afraid.B. Unwilling.C. Pleased.D. Ready.
      D
One f the reasns why astrnmers like t put telescpes in space is that the “seeing” is better. With n turbulent (湍流的) atmsphere in the way the stars shine steadily, rather than twinkling as they d when seen frm the grund.
But it is nt just an atmsphere that can ruin the seeing. The rapidly grwing number f satellites in lw-Earth rbit is already causing prblems fr grund-based telescpes, which find their images cntaminated by streaks f sunlight reflected ff passing satellites. Nw, a paper published in Nature suggests that culd sn becme a serius prblem fr space-ging telescpes as well.
Alejandr Brlaff and his clleagues at NASA’s Ames Research Centre, in Califrnia, searched regulatry filings t wrk ut just hw many satellites might be in rbit by the end f the next decade. Numbers are already explding. In 2018 there were arund 2,000 satellites in rbit. These days there are mre than 9,000 f SpaceX’s Starlink internet satellites alne.
Starlink is grwing fast, and SpaceX has filed paperwrk fr as many as 42,000 satellites. Others such as OneWeb, Amazn, Qianfan and Guwang are als building “mega-cnstellatins” (巨星星座). In ttal Dr Brlaff reckns there culd be arund half a millin satellites in lw rbits- belw abut 2,000 kilmetres- by 2040.
Exactly hw bthersme the satellites will be depends n factrs such as hw high a telescpe flies and whether it has a wide r narrw field f view. Calculating the numbers, the researchers cncluded that arund a third f Hubble images culd be affected. That sunds bad enugh. But if anything, the Hubble gets ff lightly.
What t d? SpaceX has tried t make its satellites less reflective, thugh with limited success, ntes Dr Brlaff. Crdinatin and data-sharing can help. Astrnmers armed with details f a mega-cnstellatin’s rbits can time their bservatins t minimise interference. But that slutin des nt scale well, says Dr Brlaff: eventually the sky becmes s crwded that avidance is impssible.
      32. What serius prblem may space telescpes sn face?
      A. They may lse cntact with Earth because f satellite signals.
      B. Their images may be plluted by sunlight reflected frm satellites.
      C. They may run ut f energy due t the grwing number f satellites.
      D. Their rbits may be changed by nearby satellites.
      33. What d the numbers mentined in Paragraphs 3 and 4 mainly shw?
      A. The cst f launching satellites has risen quickly.
      B. The number f satellites in rbit is increasing dramatically.
      C. Different cuntries are cmpeting t launch satellites.
      D. Satellites are becming smaller and mre advanced.
      34. What is Dr Brlaff’s attitude tward the prpsed slutins?
      A. OptimisticB. DubtfulC. IndifferentD. Supprtive
      35. What is the mst suitable title fr the passage?
      A. The Rapid Develpment f Satellite Internet
      B. Why Astrnmers Prefer Telescpes in Space
      C. The Future f Space Telescpes
      D. The Impact f numerus Satellites n Astrnmy

In a time when celebrities, scial media influencers, and famus persnalities seem like they are just a click away, it’s easy t understand hw emtinal bnds with public figures have becme mre persnal and cmplex than ever. 36
The term was cined in 1956 when televisins became widely available, and TV viewers began t develp the sense f false clseness with the characters n the screen. The parascial relatinships are ne-sided relatinships in which a persn develps a strng sense f cnnectin r familiarity with smene they dn’t knw, mst ften celebrities r media persnalities. 37 They experience a bnd that lacks reciprcity (互惠).
There is n firm cnclusin regarding why peple develp parascial relatinships. 38 When s much f ur time is spent nline r watching TV r mvies, we’re naturally likely t recgnize the faces we repeatedly see and develp warm feelings fr them.
Anther pssible cause is lneliness. Sme research suggests that the lnelier an individual feels, the mre likely they are t engage in parascial relatinships, seeking a cnnectin in sme frm, if nt in real life. 39 Sme researchers have fund that highly scial individuals wh are mre likely t frm friendships and relatinships in real life are als mre likely t frm parascial relatinships.
There is als the belief that parascial relatinships can simply be less demanding and mre fun than real-life relatinships. 40 Plus the subjects f parascial relatinships are typically talented, beautiful, r funny.
Originally believed t be unhealthy due t their ne-sided nature, these parascial relatinships are typically harmless and, in fact, quite cmmn.
      A. Other research cntradicts the idea.
      B. They cntribute t real-life relatinships.
      C. These are knwn as parascial relatinships.
      D. Parascial relatinships can certainly have benefits.
      E. But ne is that the human brain develped t be scial.
      F. These relatinships exist nly in the mind f the individual.
      G. There are n cnflicts r maintenance that need t be attended t.
