Several years n, China’s traditinal health craze is shwing n sign f slwing dwn. While jujube ice cream and herbal bubble teas have each had their 15 minutes f fame, nw a bar in the suthwestern Chinese city f Chengdu thinks it’s fund the next viral trend: traditinal Chinese medicine(TCM) drinks.
Priced arund 50 yuan per glass, the drinks n ffer at the newly pened Chill Spt claim a wide range f effects, frm weight lss t nurishing (滋养) a persn’s bld. Chill Spt’s wner Liu says he cnsulted a lcal TCM dctr fr the recipes and surced the required materials frm a TCM specialty medicine stre, saking (浸泡) them fr ver three mnths. “I talked t TCM dctrs, and they said mixing traditinal Chinese medicine with ther drinks is nt a prblem,” Liu added.
Liu isn’t the first bar wner t capitalize n a grwing interest in healthy lifestyles, r yangsheng, amng yung Chinese. TCM-themed establishments have ppped up natinwide in recent years. Sme bars, like Liu’s, ffer TCM drinks like “Bss’ Chicken Sup” — featuring angelica (白芷) rt, ginseng, and ginger.
But TCM experts cautin sme yangsheng fferings may verprmise and underdeliver. They can als land their creatrs in legal truble: China’s Fd Safety Law als specifies that nly medicinal substances that are traditinally bth eaten and used in Chinese medicines can be added t fd. Wu Meiling, a lawyer warned that bars that use unapprved ingredients can face fines, the cancellatin f their licenses, r even criminal respnsibility.
Liu tld Cver News that his drinks aim t prmte health, nt treat diseases. He stressed the imprtance f blending traditinal Chinese medicine with mdern lifestyles. “We want t shw that traditinal wisdm can enhance cntemprary living in a way that is bth enjyable and beneficial,” he said. “It’s abut balance and well-being, nt just pleasure.”

Frget t bring yur charger with yu n vacatin? What if yur clthing culd generate electricity frm the heat yur bdy naturally prduces? This futuristic cncept is nw appraching reality thanks t scientists at Chalmers University f Technlgy and Linköping University.
Researchers say the remarkable new textile (纺织) technlgy turns bdy heat int electricity thrugh thermelectric (热电的) effects, ptentially pwering wearable devices frm yur clthing. The innvatin centers n a newly develped plymer (聚合物) called ply. “The plymers that we use are bendable, lightweight and are easy t use in bth liquid and slid frm. They are als nn-pisnus, ” says study first authr Mariavittria Craigher.
Unlike previus attempts at creating thermelectric textiles, this breakthrugh addresses a critical barrier that has lng held back prgress: the lack f air-stable n-type (negative) plymers. “We fund the missing piece f the puzzle t make a better thread — a type f plymer that had recently been discvered. It has utstanding perfrmance stability in cntact with air, while at the same time having a very gd ability t cnduct electricity. By using plymers, we dn’t need any rare earth metals, which are cmmn in electrnics, ” explains Craigher.
Thermelectric generatrs wrk by turning temperature differences int electrical energy. When ne side f a thermelectric material is warmer than the ther, electrns mve frm the ht side t the cld side, generating an electrical current. The human bdy cntinuusly generates heat, creating natural temperature differentials between the skin and the surrunding envirnment.
Fr efficient thermelectric generatin bth p-type (psitive) and n-type materials must wrk tgether. While p-type materials have been well-established in previus research, creating stable n-type materials has been a persistent challenge. Mst n-type rganic materials degrade (降解) rapidly when expsed t xygen in the air, ften becming ineffective within days.
What makes this develpment particularly exciting is the remarkable stability f ply-cated silk. Unlike similar materials that degrade within days when expsed t air, these new thermelectric threads maintain their perfrmance fr ver 14 mnths under nrmal cnditins withut any prtective cating.
      8. Which f the fllwing best describes ply?
      A. Safe and cnductive.B. Recyclable and flexible.
      C. Adaptable and metal-free.D. Stable and liquid-prf.
      9. What is the crrect rder f thermelectric generatrs’ wrking prcedures?
      a. The bdy prduces heat. b. Electrns mve frm the ht side t the cld.
      c. Electrical current is generated. d. Temperature differences are created.
      A. d-c-a-b.B. d-a-c-b.C. a-b-c-d.D. a-d-b-c.
      10. What makes efficient thermelectric generatin pssible?
      A. The develpment f durable n-type materials.B. The discvery f time-tested p-type materials.
      C. The breakdwn f dispsable n-type materials.D. The remval f rganic prtective cating.
      11. Which is the best title f the text?
      A. Smart Devices: Frm Dream t RealityB. Ec-Friendly Materials: A Textile Revlutin
      C. Bdy Heat Pwers Devices: Wearable ChargerD. N Rare Metals Needed: Clthing Breakthrugh

Scientists have lng knwn dmesticated animals tend t share qualities like flppy ears, smaller brains and decreased aggressin. Nw, researchers have discvered that humans may have influenced anther quality in dgs: the clr f their eyes. When dmesticating fur-legged cmpanins, humans have selected dgs with darker eyes because we view them as mre friendly and yuthful.
A team f researchers in Japan analyzed irises (虹膜) in phts f 22 gray wlves and 81dmestic dgs f 35 majr breeds (品种). In their study, they reprt that dmestic dgs tend t have significantly darker and redder irises than their yellw-eyed wlf cusins. “Nt nly is there a clear eye clr difference between wlves and dgs, but we als find that dgs with darker eyes are perceived as mre friendly and immature by humans,” said lead authr Akitsugu Knn, an animal scientist in Japan. “This finding suggests that humans may uncnsciusly select fr dark eyes because they seem less threatening. ”
T test this, the researchers picked 12 images f dgs, phtshpped their eyes and created a questinnaire. They asked 70 participants t rate the dgs’ persnality qualities (such as friendliness, trustwrthiness and aggressin) n a scale f zer t five. Their results shwed participants rated dark-eyed dgs as mre friendly and less mature than light-eyed dgs.
“We think that a darker iris makes it mre difficult t distinguish the size f the pupil (瞳孔) and thus gives the illusin (错觉) f a large pupil, which is assciated with ur perceptin f being mre infant-like,” said Knn. Human pupil size tends t decrease with age, therefre, we may assciate large pupils with yung creatures that require ur care.
Jessica Hekman, a vet and dg geneticist said that it appears cnvincing that humans selected fr dark eyes. Hwever, she adds, it remains unclear whether ur pups were riginally dmesticated that way, r if the selectin is a recent breeder-driven trend. Further research will be needed t determine exactly when the eye clr change ccurred.
      12. Hw did the researchers carry ut the study accrding t paragraph 2?
      A. By prviding examples.B. By bserving reactins.
      C. By making cmparisns.D. By mnitring changes.
      13. The researchers created the questinnaire t ________.
      A. test the reasns fr human selectinB. find the link between humans and dgs
      C. knw dgs’ appearance and intelligenceD. rate the dgs’ persnality qualities
      14. Which figure best illustrates peple’s perceptin f dgs?
      A. B.
      C. D.
      15. What is Jessica Hekman’s attitude twards the study?
      A. Supprtive.B. Oppsed.C. Dismissive.D. Cautius.
