Last December, researchers at the Natinal Ignitin Facility(NIF)had made a breakthrugh in fusin (核聚变)energy, the same chemical prcess that pwers the stars and ur sun. They had succeeded in prducing the first labratry fusin reactin that prduces mre energy than it takes t cause the reactin. It made headlines arund the wrld.
At extremely high temperatures and pressure, the atms break int their cmpnents — nuclei (原子核) and electrns. This kind f psitive nuclei and negative electrns is referred t as plasma (等离子体). It is cnsidered the furth state f matter, the ther three being slid, liquid and gas. Fusin is a prcess that takes place in the plasma state. The prcess f fusin prduces a huge amunt f energy which, in turn, causes further fusin reactins.
Our sun is incredibly efficient in prducing fusin energy; its huge mass creates the pressure and temperatures needed t keep the reactin ging. Earth can’t recreate the high pressure and temperature cnditins f the sun, s scientists must find techniques in labratries t start the reactin.
The NIF experiment successfully prved that fusin isn’t just a theretical cncept: we are able t create an energy surce that is self-sustaining. Fusin als has the advantage — it des nt cause radiactive waste.
Hwever, despite billins f dllars f gvernment funding put int fusin research, we are still decades away frm fusin-prduced electricity. Humans have prduced fusin reactins in the past, with nuclear bmbs. But in bmbs, the energy is released t quickly. Scientists will need t figure ut hw t release energy in a cntrlled and cnsistent manner fr regular use.
Even if we can vercme challenges in the develpment, will fusin be able t cmpete with slar and wind pwer fr cst and availability? The future f fusin may nt be clear at the mment, but it is truly brilliant fr science and sciety t see the pwer f the sun cme t life in a lab setting.
      8. What facts have we learned abut the first labratry fusin reactin?
      A. It was a big success.B. It escaped public attentin.
      C. It prduced less energy than expected.D. It intrduced the furth state f matter.
      9. What is a big advantage f fusin energy?
      A. It depends n the sun.B. It can be clean energy.
      C. It is an unexpected energy surce.D. It wrks under nrmal cnditins.
10 What can be implied abut prducing fusin energy in paragraph 5?
      A. It faces sme challenges nw.B. It isn’t supprted by gvernments.
      C. It may cause very dangerus cnsequences.D. It cannt cmpete with slar and wind pwer.
      11. Which statement wuld the authr mst likely agree with?
      A. The future f fusin is clear and bright.
      B. Fusin energy will be the main energy ne day.
      C. The present achievements in fusin energy are remarkable.
      D. The experimental techniques are essential t prducing fusin energy.

Althugh daydreaming is ften seen as an enjyable escape frm the dull, tugh r repetitive aspects f everyday life, the act f “pleasurable thinking” is mre challenging and less satisfying than many peple might think, accrding t a grwing bdy f research.
Years ag, Nichlas Buttrick and his team cnducted a study. The researchers asked, “Which is mre enjyable: trying t think enjyable thughts r ding daily individual activities?” They fund that f the 2,557 participants frm 12 sites in 11 cuntries, mst peple, acrss cultures, enjyed engaging in individual activities mre than thinking freely and entertaining themselves with their thughts as best they culd. “Participants randmly assigned t d smething reprted significantly greater gratificatin than that f participants randmly assigned t think fr pleasure, and the results were cnsistent in every cuntry,” Buttrick cncluded.
Recently, a fllw-up study led by Erin Westgate, a psychlgy prfessr at the University f Flrida, investigated why s many peple d nt chse t think fr pleasure, and when directed t d s, struggle t cncentrate successfully.
The researchers started by prviding participants with specific examples f meaningful tpics and then instructed them t think “meaningful” thughts. Surprisingly, they discvered that asking peple t think meaningful thughts actually made daydreaming much less enjyable than freely thinking abut unguided thughts. “I was s cnfused,” Westgate said. But after analyzing which meaningful tpics participants reprted thinking abut when asked t think abut smething meaningful, she realized that “they were heavy stuff”.
Westgate wants t help peple recapture that daydream state, which may bst wellness. Althugh imprving daydream states can be difficult, she recmmends priming (指引) the brain t think abut tpics that are bth enjyable and meaningful.
“It’s smething that sets us apart. Thinking fr pleasure allws us t imagine new realities,” Westgate said. “But that kind f thinking requires practice. As yu build yur ability t daydream, yu’ll have a surce f enjyable thughts during stressful times. The next time yu’re walking, instead f pulling ut yur phne, try it.”
      12. What is the cmmn understanding f “pleasurable thinking” amng peple?
      A. It is a frm f relaxatin.B. It is a usual daily practice.
      C. It is a sign f wasting time.D. It is a hard but rewarding activity.
      13. What is the clsest meaning t the underlined wrd “gratificatin” in paragraph 2?
      A. Success.B. Bredm.C. Hesitatin.D. Enjyment.
      14. Which f the fllwing made Westgate puzzled?
      A. The research methds.
      B. The jy levels f the participants.
      C. The participants’ chice f meaningful tpics.
D The lack f a clear definitin f “meaningful thughts”.
      15. What advice des Westgate give t peple?
      A. Fcusing n new realities.
      B. Engaging in physical exercise.
      C. Keeping daydreaming during tugh times.
      D. Daydreaming n bth pleasant and significant subjects.
