The path t success isn’t always clear-cut. Julia Green knws this well. Just as she graduated frm cllege, a financial crisis swept the cuntry, making it hard t get a jb in jurnalism. Plar bears usually have a high-fat diet, eating animals like seals, which they hunt n sea ice. The study fund that suthern bears, which are trying t cpe with less sea ice, are eating mre plants.
The team studied the plar bears’ DNA (the chemical instructins that tell a living thing hw t grw and develp). All animals have pieces f DNA, called “jumping genes”, which can mve frm ne place t anther. When these pieces mve, they change the DNA instructins — which can change hw an animal behaves.
They fund that jumping genes were mre active in the suthern bears and sme were assciated with temperature. The affected genes were linked t hw the bdy cpes with heat and hw it prcesses fat, which becmes imprtant when there is nt a lt f fd available. Alice Gdden frm the University f East Anglia, England, wh led the research, called it a “hpeful study” shwing that plar bears can adapt t climate change.
