Eight hurs shvelling snw in -20℃ might nt sund like the ideal day ut, but a cmmitted team f vlunteers in Finland are wrking dawn t dusk building enrmus snw drifts (雪堆) fr ne f the wrld’s mst endangered seals.
The Saimaa ringed seal was nce cmmn arund Lake Saimaa in the suth-east f Finland, but nw nly 495 f them remain. In the late 1980s the ppulatin f the seals decreased t its lwest pint, with fewer than 200 left, driven by hunting and deaths caused by fish traps. Accidental deaths in fishing nets remain a challenge. Nw, the seals are fully prtected but the threat f the climate emergency is wrrying. The seals make “snw caves” inside snw drifts where they raise their yung and prtect them frm the elements and predatrs such as red fxes, but as the climate warms, the snw is disappearing.
T save these rare seals, 300 vlunteers spend days shvelling snw int piles 7m lng and 1.5m high arund the edge f the frzen lake. “It’s kind f a snw cave,” says Vincent Biard, a PhD student and vlunteer frm the University f Eastern Finland. “The seals cme frm under and dig int the snw drifts t create a cave where they can give birth and raise their yung.” They get arund n ft r skis, dragging their equipment with them ver a distance f 10km. Biard describes the day as “kind f fun”, and adds, “yu actually have an impact, which is nice. If we dn’t d it, then they wuld just g extinct quite quickly.”
Mre than 300 pups have been brn in artificial snwdrifts since they started making them in 2014. “We are n a rising grwth curve, s things still lk pretty nice,” says Jari Ilmnen, crdinatr f Our Saimaa Seal Life, which is an EU-funded prgramme. “We are ding what we can, s we have t have hpe and psitive thughts.” Human-made snw drifts are larger and “mre durable than natural snw drifts”, says Ilmnen. “By the first half f February mst f the natural nes had melted away, but the manmade nes std strng.”

In the age f shrt vides and scial media, mst f us are used t reading in small pieces: a 15-secnd vide intrductin, a 100-wrd pst, a 3-line news headline. We can get infrmatin quickly and easily, but many peple are lsing the ability t d deep reading — the slw, fcused reading f a lng text, which helps us understand cmplex ideas, think critically and develp empathy (共情).

Many peple may think that deep reading is a waste f time in this fast-paced sciety, but it actually brings many lng-term benefits. Studies have shwn that deep reading can imprve ur cncentratin, reduce stress, and develp ur emtinal intelligence. This helps us develp empathy and cmmunicate better with thers in real life.
S hw can we get back the habit f deep reading? Prfessr Zhang gives sme simple tips. First, start with a bk yu are really interested in, nt a bk that thers say yu “shuld” read. Secnd, set a small daily gal, like reading 20 pages a day, and stick t it. Third, turn ff yur phne and ther electrnic devices when yu read, s yu can fcus withut distractin. “Deep reading is like a muscle. The mre yu practice it, the strnger it gets,” said Prfessr Zhang. “In a wrld full f nise and distractin, the ability t fcus and think deeply is the mst valuable skill we can have.”

B. It imprves peple’s cmmunicatin skills.
C. It allws peple t get infrmatin quickly.
D. It helps peple remember things better.
15. What is the main purpse f the last paragraph?

I was invited t a ckut n an ld friend’s farm in western Washingtn. I parked my car utside the farm and walked past a milking huse which had apparently nt been used in many years. A nise at a windw caught my attentin, s I entered it. It was a hummingbird (蜂鸟), desperately trying t escape. She was cvered in spider-webs (蛛网) and was barely able t mve her wings. With the bird in my cupped hand, I lked arund t see hw she had gtten in. The brken windw glass was the likely answer. I stuffed a piece f clth int the hle and tk her utside, clsing the dr securely behind me.
When I pened my hand, the bird did nt fly away; she sat lking at me with her bright eyes. I remved the sticky spider-webs that cvered her head and wings. Still, she made n attempt t fly. Perhaps she had been struggling against the windw t lng and was t tired? Or t thirsty?
As I carried her up the blackberry-lined path tward my car where I kept a water bttle, she began t mve. I stpped, and she sn tk wing but did nt immediately fly away.
Hvering (悬停), she apprached within six inches f my face. Fr a very lng mment, this tiny creature lked int my eyes, turning her head frm side t side. Then she flew quickly ut f sight.
