The Saimaa ringed seal was nce cmmn arund Lake Saimaa in the suth-east f Finland,but nw nly 495 f them remain.In the late 1980s the ppulatin f the seals decreased t its lwest pint,with fewer than 200 left,driven by hunting and deaths caused by fish traps.Accidental deaths in fishing nets remain a challenge.Nw,the seals are fully prtected but the threat f the climate emergency is wrrying.The seals make "snw caves" inside snw drifts where they raise their yung and prtect them frm the elements and predatrs such as red fxes,but as the climate warms,the snw is disappearing.
T save these rare seals,300 vlunteers spend days shvelling snw int piles 7 m lng and 1.5 m high arund the edge f the frzen lake. "It's kind f a snw cave," says Vincent Biard,a PhD student and vlunteer frm the University f Eastern Finland. "The seals cme frm under and dig int the snw drifts t create a cave where they can give birth and raise their yung." Mre than 300 pups have been brn in artificial snwdrifts since they started making them in 2014.
