Glancing at the authr’s cpy f the bk n the desk, I am reminded f hw lng it has taken t get t this pint as I am cnfirming the arrangements fr ne f the prmtinal events scheduled fr my furth nn-fictin wrk n art.
I actually started prfessinal writing fairly late in life, after wrking fr the lcal cuncil fr many years. Althugh I was int literature, it was fr persnal enjyment. During my teenage years I smetimes wrte fr the schl magazine, just fr fun. Later, this interest develped int a strnger desire fr recgnitin, and, I’d spend mnths typing texts and sending them ff t
magazines and publishers, anxiusly awaiting a respnse that ften never came.
I have als had a passin fr art. Wandering arund galleries is an abslute pleasure fr me, althugh I dn’t have an artistic bne in my bdy, unlike my twin sister, Luisa, wh is
remarkably gifted and has launched a career as an artist.
One evening she called t say she was struggling with the text fr an upcming exhibitin brchure and asked if I culd give her a hand. I warned her that I’d give it a try. Later that evening I managed t prduce smething that I thught might be acceptable and emailed it t her.
It was a real success and set the wheels in mtin t turn my dream int a reality. One f
the guests at the pening night was an editr wrking fr an nline arts magazine. Having been
impressed by my piece describing the exhibitin in the brchure, she managed t track me dwn, first by cntacting the gallery and then my sister. Well, t be hnest, I didn’t knw what t think and the prspect f meeting with her filled me with fear. Questins came flding thrugh my
mind and I immediately messaged my sister, wh strngly urged me t seize the pprtunity. S I fired ff an acceptance email befre I had the pprtunity t change my mind again.
Over the fllwing mnths I devted every spare mment f my time t attending
exhibitins and crafting cmmentary articles n the regin’s artists. I have t admit that the whle thing was exciting. My brain was cnstantly filled with ideas, and I enjyed watching them take shape as I typed int the night n my laptp.
After that first summer, I was hked n writing abut art, which was s enjyable and
satisfying. Definitely, it was what I shuld be ding.

Whm wuld yu trust mre: an expert wh seems t have all f the answers r ne wh admits what he desn’t knw? We have spent the past five years studying that questin.
Our research was sparked by a tensin we bth nticed early in ur academic careers. Our graduate studies made us deeply aware f hw little we knew abut ur respective research areas, even as we develped specialized knwledge in these fields. Schlars call this particular variety f self-awareness “intellectual humility”, and it’s smething we suspect many experts encunter as
they transitin int a new rle.
On the ther hand, barely anyne seemed t expect us t be intellectually humble in ur
then new psitins. Peple seemed t engage with us as knw-it-all, capital-E experts wh culd cnfidently answer any questins that were even remtely related t ur specialties. The scariest part was that we culd have easily explited these pprtunities t share ur pinins n tpics well beynd ur expertise.
These experiences gt us thinking abut intellectual humility amng experts, which is
linked with many desirable behavirs, including cnsidering thers’ perspectives, and being better
at cnflict reslutin. Cnversely, when experts claim t knw mre than they actually d, this is nt nly the abandnment f trust but als ptentially disastrus in terms f prmting public
cnversatin.
Given these high stakes, we designed a series f studies t understand hw peple think
abut expertise. We asked 100 participants t freely describe their understanding f expertise,
analyzed abut 200 related psts n the Internet, and asked 700 nline participants t tackle a
wrd srting task in which they identified and gruped different terms such as “knwledge” r
“qualificatins” int brader perspectives n expertise. The results suggested that mst peple
assume that exceptinal knwledge is a defining feature f expertise. The thught that expertise is defined by slving prblems and getting results was als a repeated tendency.
At first glance, there’s nthing wrng with using qualificatins and a demnstrated recrd f vercming prblems t examine smene’s psitin as an expert. On secnd thught, these understandings f expertise may leave sme peple defenseless t perceiving expertise in thse wh nly appear t knw their stuff. These peple are expected t mve frm simplistic
understandings f what makes an expert t mre thughtful nes.
In future research, we want t see ifit’s pssible t create mre substantial changes in hw peple understand expertise — changes that last fr weeks, mnths and ptentially years. It
remains t be cnfirmed whether helping peple prize intellectual humility in experts might make them better at detecting when smene is verstepping beynd the bundaries f their expertise, and accrdingly ensure that humble experts, wh are aware f and admit the limits f their
expertise, are there t help humanity address ur wrld’s mst pressing challenges.
28 .As fr peple’s perceptin f experts, the authr is .
A .supprtive B .puzzled C .tlerant D .sceptical
29 .What can be inferred abut the results f present studies?
A .Expertise encurages a knw-it-all mindset.
B .Experts fail t live up t peple’s expectatin.
C .Intellectual humility springs frm public belief.
D .Prblem-slving ability ranks high in expertise.
30 .What can we learn frm the last paragraph?
A .Humility amng experts shuld be prmted.
B .A better mdel t assess humility is expected.
C .Refining judgment n experts needs cntinued explratin.
D .Tackling urgent issues relies n humble experts’jint effrts.

Rewilding is a simple cncept: areas f wilderness are identified fr restratin, native
animals and plants are reintrduced, and natural prcesses take ver. The term was cined in the 1990s. Much like nature, language underges cntinuus transfrmatin. T sme, rewilding nw incrprates the idea f building “crridrs” s that species can crss frm ne area f wilderness t anther, as they wuld have dne in pre-human times. T thers, it is abut letting “natural
chas” take ver, meaning any human interference is prhibited.
Why might the average persn be drawn t the idea f rewilding? Many hld that nstalgia is behind it. The fact is that mst fus can’t say, “Where did all thse Red Admiral butterflies g, that were nce s cmmn in my back garden?” We cannt recall things that are beynd living
memry, let alne a time when wild pigs and deer ran thrugh frests. Indeed, we need nt be remtely sentimental (多愁善感) t see why bidiversity is desirable.
There are numerus benefits t rewilding, such as restring natural bidiversity and
imprving the eclgical resilience f damaged landscapes. Actually, at the mst pragmatic level, withut healthy ecsystems, ur crps will fail and bviusly we will nt survive. A wrkable
fd chain must start with pllinatrs, such as bees and hverflies. Intensive farming, hwever, has largely remved the wildflwers they feed n and turned much f ur landscape int lifeless sil. Only by reintrducing missing insects, plants and animals can we reverse this trend.
The idea f rewilding has certainly caught the public eye, and jurnalists have played their part in this. Sme have warned abut the ptential terrible cnsequences. Others have shwered
praise n the plan f releasing beavers back int streams. Devting attentin t effrts like these is n bad thing, yet rewilding is smething different altgether: an entire ecsystem becming
self-regulatry and self-sustaining. Furthermre, if the public are t be persuaded f the benefits f rewilding, they must be cnfident that jurnalists are prviding the full picture. In Spain’s
Guadarrama hills, fr example, wlves’ return brings cnservatin jy but raises lcal cncerns ver lst sheep and cattle. Hnest discussin abut this kind f issue is required.
Rewilding prjects, it has t be said, d nt always g as planned. The idea that we shuld allw nature t reclaim parts f ur landscape is far mre divisive than say, any prpsal fr
reducing plastic waste r tackling the illegal wildlife trade. Few peple wuld be blind t the
advantages f limiting plastic cnsumptin r argue against prtecting elephants. Yet nt s lng ag, n-ne gave a secnd thught t these things. It tk the incredible effrts f a few
passinate, principled individuals t educate the majrity f us thrugh lng campaigning and evidence-based argument. Hpefully, fifty years frm nw, with ecsystems flurishing again, peple will questin why ur generatin ever saw rewilding as debated.
31 .Why des the authr mentin Red Admiral butterflies?
A .T cntradict a claim. B .T justify a cmparisn.
C .T challenge a cnventin. D .T illustrate an assumptin.
32 .What des the wrd “pragmatic” underlined in Paragraph 3 mst prbably mean?
A .Cmplex. B .Precise. C .Advanced. D .Practical.
33 .As fr rewilding, which wuld the authr agree with?
A .The media play a majr rle in its prgress.
B .Objective reprting facilitates its prmtin.
C .Public cncern abut it shapes media cverage.
D .Disagreement amng jurnalists utweighs agreement.
34 .Which wuld be the best title fr the passage?
A .Rewilding: One Step at a Time B .Rewilding: Back t the Unknwn
C .Rewilding: A Race against Limits D .Rewilding: The Recall f the Wild

Human histry culd be tld as the stry f seeing. Each inventin that sharpened ur
visin extended the reach f perceptin and redrew the brders f the knwn. When a Dutch
craftsman fitted tw lenses (镜片) int a tube in 1608, he did nt simply enlarge distant bjects; he expanded the human mind. Frm that mment, bservatin stpped t be passive. 35
As centuries unflded, the instruments f bservatin multiplied: micrscpes, cameras,
telescpes, sensrs, and finally, algrithms. Each revealed a new layer f reality — the
infinitesimal cell, the atm, the DNA helix, the universe. 36 T see was t knw; T measure was t exist. Observatin drew the utlines f science, yet it als defined ur sense f self, fr every discvery beynd the human scale reminded us hw small we are.
37 The internet made bservers f everyne, yet it als made us bservable. The gaze (注视) turned inward and utward at nce: we became data pints, recrding and being
recrded in the same instant. 38 The system extends frm the depths f space t the finest details f a face.
And nw, machines have begun t see fr us. Satellites watch the weather; neural netwrks watch the wrld. They identify patterns invisible t human eyes — the mvements f universe, the signatures f disease, the habits f a city. 39
The universe may be infinite, but s t is the human desire t understand what it means t lk.
A .Seeing is n lnger believing.
B .We n lnger merely lked — we searched.
C .The act f lking became bth a discipline and a philsphy.

G .The telescpe’s lens and the smartphne’s camera are nw part f the same glbal system f seeing.

better, t?

When my vice sticks and refuses t cperate, I can’t frce it. I simply let my stutter g. And I can’t cntrl hw thers perceive me. But with prper effrt, I’m sure that I can participate in any cnversatin.
