This was discvered by Vladimir Dinets, wh is bth an animal expert and a mathematician, and his research was published n May 23, 2025, inFrntiers in Animal Behavir. Als, the hawk knew that sparrws wuld be at a certain huse because the wner put ut rubbish every day. S, the hawk used the cars which lined up t get clse t the sparrws withut being seen, making it easier t catch them.

Maybe ther animals can d the same, but this Cper's Hawk is the first wild animal they' ve discvered. These birds fly thrugh here when migrating(迁徙) in summer and winter. This means the Cper's Hawk prbably learned t d this in just a few days r weeks.
Finally, Dinets als saw a Cper's Hawk hunting in the same manner the fllwing winter(2022), and he believes it is the same hawk, nw an adult. Hwever, in the summer f the year after that, the sund signal f the streetlight was gne, the peple living there mved away, and there were n lnger any sparrws there. Frm then n,until the article was published, Dinets never saw the Cper's Hawk nearby again.

Getting hit by lightning is nt usually gd. But in fact, ne tree seems t benefit frm the natural reward.
The height and brad head f almendr(杏) trees act as natural lightning rds(避雷针). They nt nly can survive a pwerful lightning, but actually attract it. In a thick jungle, such lightning strikes(击中) can even grant the tree a decisive advantage in the cmpetitin fr survival. Why? Because the lightning will hurt its surrunding“enemies”.
The finding cmes frm a years-lng study. Scientists studied lightning's influence n trees and finally wrte a paper t share their new findings in the May New Phytlgist.
This scientific team studied and recrded the fate(命运) f 93 trees hit by lightning.Amng them were 9 almendrs. After tw years, every almendr tree f the 9 was ding fine. T their surprise, in fact, they were thriving(茂盛的), while 56 percent f the ther species(种类) that had been hit are nw dead.
Except a few leaves which are nt s smth as befre, almendrs weren't hurt by lightning. Hwever, scientists bserved that the lianas(藤本植物) which grew up them were all burned by the electric shck. These vines(藤蔓) spread everywhere and it is a danger t almendrs. At least, they cut ff light t the trees that they climb up. They als can steal nutrients(营养) frm almendrs. And a liana may nt climb just ne tree.It can send up vines that cnnect t branches n neighbring different species. S when lightning strikes an almendr, the deadly current(电流) spreads thrugh lianas t neighbring trees and burns them up. This can free up space, light and nutrients fr an almendr t grw vibrantly(生机盎然地).
But why were almendrs nt hurt as ther species nearby? Sme f the scientists think the reasn is that the tree's wd has lw electrical resistance(阻力). That might let it safely lead the current t the grund withut suffering an buildup(积聚) f heat. Others think the structure f the tree's head may direct electricity away frm the branches—— and tward its neighbrs. It's really difficult t understand all the bilgical and physical steps that take place when lightning hits trees. “It wuld be interesting t be able t say smething mre n that,” scientists nted. “We' re all curius hw the almendr avids getting burned by each lightning strike. But we are nt sure. S we didn't mentin that in the paper.”
      41. What d almendr trees get after being hit by lightning?
      A. Natural lightning rds.B. A cllectin f heat.
      C. Better living cnditins.D. Mre smth leaves.
英语试题 第7页(共12页)42. Hw many f the 93 trees died tw years after being hit by lightning?
      A. 93.B. Abut 47.C. 9.D. Abut 37.
      43. What des“them” refer t in Paragraph 5?
      A. Leaves.B. Lianas.C. Vines.D. Almendrs.

      B. Almendrs' hurting surrunding trees.

      D. Reasns fr almendrs' survival.
