It’s January 2022, and my seven-year-ld sn is standing n his skatebard at the tp f a cncrete slpe (斜坡). He lks scared, and I’m urging him t try, almst begging. The reasn fr my enthusiasm? Just a few weeks earlier, I std frzen in that same spt befre taking my wn

First, skatebarding teaches determinatin because prgress cmes frm effrts. N matter hw skilled the crwd r hw gravity-defying (反重力的) the mves, yu’ll see just as many
tricks ging wrng as right. Irish writer Samuel Beckett culd have been speaking fr skaters when he wrte: “Try again. Fail again. Fail better.”
There are als plenty f sensible benefits, such as mindfulness. When yu’re skatebarding, it’s almst impssible t think f anything else. What magic it is t step n a piece f wd with
fur little wheels and be transprted t a place where yur head is emptied and the utside wrld can’t tuch yu.
The best part, thugh? The cmmunity. My husband, sn and I are part f an infrmal
grup f parents and children wh skate tgether. We lve it, frm the clear ringing sund beneath ur wheels t the way the sun makes the graffiti-cvered buildings pp with clr. We make
friends and learn frm ne anther. We face ur fears side by side, cheer fr the highs, and share the falls.

whatever they want, whenever they want. Research has shwn that self-driven slitude can bst creativity and well-being.
And, rather than hanging ut with the mates they have, many travel alne in rder t meet
new friends and lvers. The islatin f the pandemic made peple “mre pen” t wandering
with strangers, says Lee Thmpsn f Flash Pack, a tur peratr. The firm, which uses the slgan “arrive sl, leave as friends”, nw takes twice as many bkings as it did befre Cvid-19.
Millennials and Gen Z are particularly keen n travelling: they spend a larger share f their incme n trips than their lder peers d. Many are pstpning getting married and having children, s have the flexibility t head ff n trip when they please.
On TikTk influencers advcate the virtues f independent travelling: “Stp waiting fr smene t jin yu.” Wmen, in particular, are welcming that trend. By ne estimate, 84% f sl travellers are female. A century ag wmen were warned nt t travel withut a male

A team in Nrway recently cnducted in-depth research n writing by hand and typing n a keybard.
The team invited 36 university students wh had t either write r type wrds displayed n a screen. The study participants used a digital pen t write in cursive (草书) n a tuchscreen, and they used ne finger n a keybard t type. The researchers used a special cap with 256 sensrs. This cap was wrn by the students, and their brain activity was recrded fr five secnds each
time they were asked t write r type.
“We shw that when writing by hand, brain cnnectivity patterns are far mre cmplex
than when typewriting n a keybard,” says Prfessr Audrey van der Meer, the team leader.
“Such widespread brain cnnectivity is knwn t be imprtant fr memry frmatin and fr
encding (编码) new infrmatin and, therefre, is beneficial fr learning.” The researchers als nte that even thugh the participants used digital pens fr writing in the study, they believe the findings wuld be similar if the participants used an ink pen and paper.
“We’ve shwn that the differences in brain activity are related t the careful frming f the letters when writing by hand while making mre use f the senses. Since it’s the mvement f the fingers carried ut when frming letters that prmtes brain cnnectivity, writing in print als has similar benefits fr learning as cursive writing,” Audrey adds. “This als explains why children
wh have learned t write and read n a tablet can have difficulty distinguishing between letters that are mirrr images f each ther, such as ‘b’ and ‘d’. They haven’t felt with their bdies what it feels like t prduce thse letters.”
Cnsidering handwritten nte-taking is becming less cmmn in educatinal settings, the researchers advcate fr mre pprtunities fr students t write by hand. “There’s sme evidence that students learn mre and remember better when taking handwritten lecture ntes, while using a cmputer with a keybard may be mre pragmatic when writing a lng text r essay,” Audrey
cncludes.
32 .What was the special cap used t d?
A .Measure the participants’ brain activity. B .Evaluate the participants’ writing styles.
C.Tell the participants when t write r type. D.Recrd the time the participants used t write.
33 .What des paragraph 3 fcus n abut the study?
A .Its backgrunds. B .Its equipment.
C .Its utcmes. D .Its prcess.
34 .What plays the key rle in strengthening brain cnnectivity?
A .Writing letters carefully by hand. B .Frming the habit f taking ntes.
C .Recgnizing letters’ mirrr images. D .Learning t practice cursive writing.
35 .What is Audrey’s attitude twards handwritten nte-taking?
A .Critical B .Tlerant C .Ambiguus D .Apprving

When heading t bed, peple ften d sme things t prmte sleep, such as drinking a cup f warm milk. 36 The answer is varied.
"One reasn that warm milk makes peple sleepy is that it reminds yu f the persn wh was kind enugh t give it t yu when yu were yunger," said psychlgist Michael. 37
On the mlecular level, the tryptphan (色氨酸) in milk has prperties which can prmte sleeping. 38 Our bdies use the tryptphan frm fd, alng with ther things, t prduce the brain chemical sertnin, which is transfrmed int melatnin, a hrmne that helps yu sleep.
39 That's because the bdy transfrms it int hrmnes that enhance sleep. But in reality, it wuld take a lt f tryptphan t make a persn feel sleepy. Even if a persn drinks that much milk, it's unclear whether the high amunt f tryptphan wuld be enugh t make him r her feel sleepy. Milk, after all, cntains many ther materials that cmpete t enter ur brain
thrugh the bld. Thus, the sleep-prmting effect f milk is limited.
As fr the temperature f the milk, there aren't any studies that suggest milk has t be warm fr any fits psychlgical r physical effects t kick in. 40 It can in turn help t relax the bdy.
A .The calming assciatin may help t lwer pre-sleep anxiety.
B .In thery, taking fd rich in tryptphan can make us feel sleepy.
C .The bdy needs the tryptphan in the milk t calm urselves dwn.
D .Can the temperature f the milk accelerate the speed f ur sleeping?
E .The bdy cannt prduce tryptphan, s peple must get it frm the diet.

G .But is there any scientific evidence that drinking warm milk will make yu sleepy?

nblemen, sl travel tday is less abut finding distant places than finding yurself.
And, rather than hanging ut with the mates they have, many travel alne in rder t meet new friends and lvers. The islatin f the pandemic made peple
“mre pen” t wandering with strangers, says Lee Thmpsn f Flash Pack, a tur peratr.
Millennials and Gen Z are particularly keen n travelling: they spend a larger share f their incme n trips than their lder peers d. Many are pstpning

They haven’t felt with their bdies what it feels like t prduce thse letters.”(“我们已经证明,大脑活动的差异与手写时仔细排列字母有关,同时更多地利用感官。
Since it’s the mvement f the fingers carried ut when
frming letters that prmtes brain cnnectivity, writing in print als has similar benefits fr

以及““One reasn that warm
milk makes peple sleepy is that it reminds yu f the persn wh was kind enugh t give it t
yu when yu were yunger," said psychlgist Michael.(心理学家迈克尔说:“热牛奶让人昏昏欲睡的一个原因是,它会让你想起那个在你年轻时好心给你热牛奶的人。”)”和“On the
mlecular level, the tryptphan(色氨酸)in milk has prperties which can prmte sleeping.(在分子水平上,色氨酸具有促进睡眠的特性。)” 选项G 中的“scientific evidence”对应后文中的“On the mlecular level” ,而选项中的 make yu sleepy 在后文又被提到,两者互相照应。故选 G 项。
One reasn that warm milk makes peple sleepy is that it reminds yu f the
persn wh was kind enugh t give it t yu when yu were yunger,' said psychlgist
故选 A 项。
38 .根据后文“Our bdies use the tryptphan frm fd, alng with ther things, t prduce the brain chemical sertnin, which is transfrmed int melatnin, a hrmne that helps yu sleep.(我们的身体利用食物中的色氨酸和其他物质来产生大脑化学物质血清素。血清素被转化为褪黑激素,这种激素有助于睡眠。) ”可知,色氨酸是从食物以及其他物质中获取的,我们身体本身不具有色氨酸。故 E 选项中的“get it frm the diet”对应“use the tryptphan frm fd, alng with ther things” 。
That's because the bdy transfrms it int hrmnes that enhance sleep. But in
reality, it wuld take a lt f tryptphan t make a persn feel sleepy.(这是因为身体将其转化为增强睡眠的激素。 选项 B 中的“In thery”与后文的“But in reality”相对应。
40 .根据前文“As fr the temperature f the milk, there aren't any studies that suggest milk has t be warm fr any fits psychlgical r physical effects t kick in.( 至于牛奶的温度,没有任何研究表明牛奶必须是热的才能发挥其心理或生理作用。)” 以及后文“It can in turn help t relax the bdy.(这反过来有助于放松身体。)” 选项 F 中的“the warmth f the milk”对应前文的“the temperature f the milk” 以及选项中的“raise ur internal bdy temperatures”对应后文的“it”,故选项 F“但牛奶的温度可能有助于提高我们体内的温度。”
