      Sctland
      Dear Marilyn,
Sctland! Ww!!! What a fantastic place! I’m having a great time. I’m afraid that I started ff badly by making a fl f myself. I was standing in the great ld Bell Twer lking acrss the lake at the hills n the ther side. This rather handsme guy happened t be standing next t me, s I casually (随意地) said, “It’s really beautiful here in England.” D yu knw what he replied? “Well, why dn’t yu g there then?” Then he laughed and explained that he was used t freigners’ making mistakes abut that. After that bad start, we gt n really great, thugh.

Anyway, Fergus is a Campbell. That’s anther typical Scttish name and he is frm an ld Scttish family. Yu knw that the Scts have their wn traditins with kilts (短褶裙) and all that. Fergus shwed me his family’s tartan (花格图案).
I tried sme really strange fd tday. When we had lunch tgether, Fergus practically frced me t taste smething called haggis. That was the first and the last time fr me. I have n idea what it is made f and I dn’t think I want t.
Everybdy here is very friendly, nt just Fergus. By the way, all that talk abut the Scts being mean is nt right. Fergus is certainly the ppsite (相反的). He says the jkes abut the Scts have all been invented by the English, their traditinal enemy.
Tmrrw Fergus is taking me t Glasgw. Can yu believe it! I thught he wuld just say gdbye and walk ff. But he really seems interested. Anyway, I’m lking frward t seeing sme bright lights and discs after all this peace and quiet. I lve it here but there are mre sheep than peple. I hpe I’ll have sme ther sides f life in Sctland t reprt after tmrrw. Keep yur fingers crssed! I’ll keep yu psted.
      Lve,

“Plant blindness” is caused by a lack f expsure (暴露) t nature and culd be cured (治愈) by clse cntact thrugh activities such as wild fd fraging (觅食), a study shws.
Accrding t the study, a lack f knwledge and appreciatin f lcal flra (植物群) results frm less time spent with plants and the knwledge and appreciatin f it is nt an inbrn human quality. Due t this, peple frequently believe that plants are “less alive” than animals.
Researchers analyzed 326 articles published in academic jurnals between 1998 and 2020. Mst shwed peple had mre interest, paid mre attentin and were mre likely t remember infrmatin abut animals. There was n cnclusive evidence that this was a characteristic that humans were brn with; rather, the reduced experience f nature in urbanized (城市化的) civilizatins seemed t be the rt f the prblem. If individuals had regular cntact with plants, it was nt unavidable.
The research shws a drp in related experience with plants leads t a cyclical prcess f inattentin. This can be addressed thrugh first-hand experience f edible (可食用的) and useful plants in lcal envirnments.
Studies shwed it was cmmn fr children — especially when yung — nt t be able t identify many species. Plant blindness was reprted in teachers as well as students, particularly in primary teachers wh had nt graduated in a science subject. Older peple had better plant knwledge, which studies suggest was because they were mre likely t have nature-related hbbies.
Thirty-five studies fund that mdernizatin r urbanizatin had an impact n plant knwledge. The increased dependence n urban services and a cash ecnmy reduced plant fraging. Schl attendance and wrk reduced the time available t spend in the natural envirnment. These factrs als reduced the time spent with family, negatively impacting the passing dwn f plant knwledge frm lder relatives t children.

      30. Wh are least likely t suffer frm plant blindness?

Mst f us are aware f “Is the glass half full r half empty?” test. If yu pick the frmer, yu’re an “ptimist(乐观主义者)”; therwise, yu’re a “pessimist”. It’s nt a black-r-white test, but it can measure hw ne sees life.
Accrding t psychlgist Lissy Ann Pun, mst f us grw up wanting t be an ptimist—a persn wh can see the gd in any situatin and can stay hpeful when facing challenges. Fr sme peple, thugh, life happens and they start t see the glass half-empty instead. Pessimists tend t see the wrng in every situatin, and blame external factrs when things aren’t ging their way.
Being cntinuusly fed with bad news and disappintments can turn ptimistic children int adults that are critical f almst everything. Fr sme, the shift becmes easier, being raised by pessimistic parents. Others still remain ptimistic, thanks t a psitive husehld grwing up.
“This is why develping ptimism in yung children is imprtant fr their develpment as adults,” said Lissy Ann. If adpted at an early age, this pwerful persnality quality can help children grw int strng adults capable f handling prblems with cnfidence, curage, and hpe. What parent wuldn’t want that fr their children?
“Children are seen as natural ptimists,” Lissy Ann said. They cme int this wrld with a pure heart that hasn’t been influenced by scietal expectatins, life experiences, … mental shck, r authrity figures yet. Whether a child grws up t be ptimistic r nt is partly genetic and partly envirnmental. “Childhd experiences, parent-child cnnectin, r authrity figures will all have sme influence,” she said. Althugh ptimism (r the lack f it) culd be passed dwn genetically, it can als be taught.
      32. What des the underlined part “see the glass half-empty” in paragraph 2 mean?
      A. Becme pessimistic.B. Learn the truth abut life.
      C. Face challenges bravely.D. Hld nt hpe in difficult times.
      33. What is paragraph 3 mainly abut?
      A. Factrs affecting children’s life attitude.
      B. The harm f receiving negative infrmatin.
      C. The prcess f children’s mental transfrmatin.
      D. Effective ways t deal with children’s pessimism.
      34. Why is it imprtant fr children t be ptimistic accrding t paragraph 4?
      A. It leads them t future success.
      B. It enables them t think creatively.
      C. It makes them mentally strng in adulthd.
      D. It helps them meet their parents’ expectatins.
      35. What can be inferred frm the last paragraph?
      A. Children are mre ptimistic than adults. B. Genetic factrs decide hw children see life.
      C. Optimism strengthens the family cnnectin. D. Prper guidance helps raise ptimistic children.
