He recalls ne ht afternn, when a yung mther rushed int the health center with a 4-year-ld child. Mr. Asiku quickly fund pr feeding as the rt f the child’s prblem.
When he sptted birds eating manges heartily n his way hme, a questin struck him: Why were s many peple in his cmmunity famished when it experienced tw plentiful mang seasns a year?
He raised the issue with his yunger brther, Emmanuel Ma. Sn afterward, the brthers met with village elders under the huge mang tree where cmmunity meetings were held. That was the start f their nnprfit, The Mang Prject, which delivers glass jars full f manges t schls, t health centers, and directly t hungry individuals.
Mst manges in Midig spil (腐烂) because rural villagers lack refrigeratrs. S the brthers needed t figure ut a way t preserve manges thrughut dry perids. They began “jarrying” — cutting fruit int thin slices and putting them in a glass cntainer f biling-ht water and sugar.
While canning is practiced thrughut the wrld, many Midig villagers can’t bear the cst f sugar, nt t mentin glass jars with secure cver. The relatively easy preservatin methd delighted village elders.
The brthers initially cllected manges that were scattered thrughut the village, but have since expanded their initiative t preserve the fruit frm their family’s ancestral land. Mr. Asiku understands that manges alne wn’t slve the cmmunity’s health issues, as peple need a variety f fds. But he believes this prject is a significant step tward imprving fd security in Midig.

Sertnin, knwn as a “happy hrmne (激素)”, is widely thught t play a rle in md, sleep, learning, and mre. S it’s n wnder that there’s an abundance f health prducts n the market that claim t bst sertnin.
Researchers have lng thught that sertnin has a rle in regulating (调节) md because drugs called selective sertnin reuptake inhibitrs (SSRIs) are widely used fr and shw prmising results in treating depressin. But if yu ask a sertnin researcher specifically hw sertnin regulates any specific functin, the answer will likely be “I dn’t knw.”
Sertnin is ften cmpared t dpamine, anther “happy hrmne” that likely has many different rles in the bdy. But scientists are much mre cnfident abut what dpamine des in the central nervus system. There’s strng evidence that it’s invlved in brain circuits that predict hw much f a reward yu’ll receive.
Despite all these, many sertnin prducts claim t lift yur md by bsting yur sertnin levels. Sme f them cntain mlecule (分子) 5-HT and tryptphan, tw mlecules that are transfrmed t sertnin in the bdy. But there’s nly limited evidence that they wrk. Tryptphan, fr ne, is fund in large quantities in peple’s daily diets. Experts say that taking large amunts f it in pill frm isn’t likely t d much t sertnin levels in the brain. Sme studies have linked lw tryptphan levels t wrsening md, but that’s nly in peple wh already have depressin. On tp f that, t get t the brain, tryptphan needs t crss the bld-brain barrier, and can nly d this a little bit at a time.
There are als natural ways t stimulate sertnin release, like exercise, eating healthy, and getting plenty f sleep. If yu’re wrried abut yur md, ultimately, the best thing yu can d is take the traditinal rute — If yu’re feeling dwn, talk t a dctr.

B. It is a key element f md regulating drugs.
C. SSRIs are recmmended by researchers.

A. T explre its similarity with sertnin.
B. T highlight its advantage ver sertnin.
C. T clarify the wrking principle f sertnin.
D. T prve the insufficient knwledge f sertnin.
10. Hw des the authr think f sertnin prducts?
A. Effective.B. Overused.C. Unreliable.D. Misunderstd.
11. What might be the best title fr the passage?
A. Can we really bst sertnin?
B. Hw t stimulate sertnin release?
C. Why sertnin prducts fail t wrk?
D. Is sertnin mre effective than dpamine?
D
Peple are ften quite selective abut the infrmatin they’ll accept, seeking ut surces that will cnfirm their biases (偏见). In thery, search engines can ptentially change that by priritizing results frm high-quality, credible surces.
Obviusly, that hasn’t wrked ut n the technlgy side, as peple quickly learned hw t game the algrithms (算法) used by search engines. But a new study is suggesting that the cncept fails n the human side, t, as peple tend t enter search terms that are specific enugh t ensure that the results will end up strengthening their existing beliefs.
Researchers Eugina Leung and Oleg Urminsky explred this by fcusing n simple questins like, “Is caffeine (咖啡因) gd r bad fr yu?” If yu wanted t search fr that, yu culd ptentially ask “what are the health effects f caffeine?” which shuld get yu a mixture f the benefits and risks. But peple culd als use terms like, “Is caffeine bad fr yu?” These searches are likely t pull up a mre biased selectin f results.
With that in mind, they designed a series f experiments. First, they asked the participants their thughts n an issue. The participants were then tld t g search fr mre infrmatin, after which their pinins n the tpic were checked again. The results shwed that if a participant used narrw search terms, they were mre likely t structure them in a way that shuld return infrmatin that cnfirms their biases. And, nt surprisingly, they were mre likely t hang nt their riginal pinin after having been given the chance t lk ver the results f that search.
The tpic really didn’t matter that much. Leung and Urminsky tested questins cvering different aspects f life. All f them displayed the same pattern. Again, it was never abslute — narrw searches tended t be 10 t 25 percent mre cmmn than general nes. There was simply a tendency t fcus searches in a way that wuld likely strengthen existing beliefs. But that tendency was remarkably cnsistent.
12. What des “the cncept” in paragraph 2 refer t?
A. Tricking algrithms t get results.
B. Using technlgy t braden minds.
C. Presenting quality results t avid biases.
D. Entering specific terms t cnfirm beliefs.
13. Which might be a prper search term t get unbaised results?
A. Des red meat increase cancer risk?
B. Hw des green tea impact health?
C. Is drinking milk gd fr bne health?
D. What are the benefits f a lw-sugar diet?
14. What is the result f narrw search terms?
A. Original insight.B. Fixed mindset.
C. Cmplete cnfidence.D. Structured infrmatin.
15. What des the last paragraph emphasize abut the phenmenn?
A. Its universality.B. Its limitatin.
C. Its slutin.D. Its tendency.
