A grup f researchers has cnstructed guan indices (粪便指数) f emperr penguins t reveal the changes in the species’ breeding habitats ver the past 11 years. Fr every ne degree Celsius rise in temperature, emperr penguins shift their breeding site an average f 73 meters further, while each additinal centimeter f snwfall adds anther 66 meters t the mve, accrding t the researchers.
Emperr penguins serve as early-warning indicatrs fr the Antarctic ecsystem and climate change, and understanding hw climate change influences their habitat use prvides insights int the delicate plar ecsystem, supprting climate actins under the United Natins Sustainable Develpment Gals (SDGs).
Hwever, it remains unclear hw the gradual climate change and extreme climatic events affect the spread f emperr penguin breeding habitats due t the shrtage f systematic and lng-term recrds dcumenting their habitat use.
Researchers frm Sun Yat-sen University and the University f Mntana develped guan indices. They presented an autmated apprach t mapping emperr penguin breeding habitats frm 2013 t 2023 at a 30-meter spatial reslutin using Earth bservatin satellite imagery.
“Our findings shwed that, under the pressure f climate change, emperr penguins are nw having t relcate their breeding grunds frequently,” said Lin Hng, the paper’s first authr and a PhD student f Sun Yat-sen University. “Unlike mst birds, emperr penguins cannt fly, nr d they build nests,” said Lin. “Instead, they rely n a stable sea-ice surface t breed.”
The study fund that sme emperr penguins are cmparatively frtunate because their breeding sites are sheltered by nearby islands, twering ice cliffs, r grunded icebergs, and they are within easy reach f pen waters rich in hunting targets. In these lcatins, the penguins rarely change their breeding sites, which are ften reused fr up t seven years. Yet where n such prtective barriers exist, emperr penguins’ ice hmes are far mre vulnerable (脆弱的) t break-up, highlighting that climate change, castal tpgraphy (地形, 地貌), and availability f hunting targets all interact t shape emperr-penguin survival.
32.Hw d researchers use the guan indices f emperr penguins?
A.T study their ppulatin trends.B.T recrd their hunting adjustments.
C.T track their breeding habitat shifts.D.T measure their mvement distance.
33.What limited the understanding f climate change’s impact n penguin habitats?
      A.Lack f cnsistent data.B.Limited use f technlgy.
      C.Extreme plar climatic events.D.Frequent relcatin f penguins.
34.Why d sme emperr penguins keep their breeding sites unchanged?
A.They can build strnger nests.B.They are less sensitive t warming.
C.Their habitats prvide enugh fd.D.Their habitats are naturally sheltered.
35.What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A.Climate Threats t Antarctic WildlifeB.Secrets f Emperr Penguin Breeding Sites
C.Guan Indices as a Windw t Penguin HabitatsD.Penguins Are Nature’s Climate Change Messengers
