Any mvement that challenged the hummingbirds’ expectatins f hw their surrundings shuld change slwed the birds dwn — even vertical stripes mving tward the feeder, which the researchers expected wuld make them speed up. When hvering r mving up r dwn, hwever, the birds based their mtr cmmands n the prjected patterns they saw.
The ability t switch between these different flight mdes highlights a hummingbird’s unique agility, says Dug Altshuler, a zlgist at the University f British Clumbia specializing in cmplex lcmtin.
