I’ve been interested in the natural wrld ever since I was a little by. Every weekend, I’d check ut as many bks abut animals frm the library as I culd carry. Bamb is a highly renewable resurce, and its cellulse (纤维素) fibres can be turned int a hard, easy - t - shape plastic fr use in cars and husehld appliances. This bamb - based plastic is nt nly as strng and lng - lasting as cmmn plastics fr such uses, but als can be reused and break dwn easily in sil.
Plastics made frm living things, r biplastics, are increasingly ppular, but they still make up nly arund half a percent f glbal plastic prductin. This is partly because they are nt as strng as il - based plastics and can’t be easily used in cmmn factry prductin prcesses.
Nw, Dawei Zha at Shenyang University f Chemical Technlgy in China and his team have develped a way t prduce plastic frm bamb cellulse, which can match r even beat the qualities f many widely used plastics. “Bamb’s rapid grwth makes it a highly renewable resurce, thugh its current uses are still largely traditinal,” says Zha.
Zha’s team first treated the bamb with certain chemicals and an acid, breaking dwn the strng chemical bnds t prduce a mixture f smaller cellulse mlecules (分子). Adding alchl then made these mlecules rearrange int a strng, slid plastic. Andrew Dve at the University f Birmingham, UK, says the plastic’s tughness is similar t cmmnly used engineering plastics. Hwever, its rigidity means its pssible uses aren’t the mst widespread. “It’s nt ging t replace the main plastics used in packaging,” says Dve. “But while it’s aiming at a smaller grup f engineering plastics, it culd still help reduce wrries abut getting enugh material fr sme plastics we use nw. ”
Althugh it isn’t as cheap as sme cmmn plastics, Zha’s team fund that it can be cmpletely recycled while keeping 90% f its riginal strength, which can lwer prductin csts, making it mre lucrative. They als reprted that it breaks dwn naturally within 50 days, althugh similar claims fr ther s - called bidegradable (可生物降解的) plastics have nt always prven true.
