I’ve been interested in the natural wrld ever since I was a little by. Every weekend, I’d check ut as many bks abut animals frm the library as I culd carry. I dreamed f fllwing in Jane Gdall’s ftsteps, ging away fr years t live in the wild and study animals. Smetimes I’d cruch in the grass fr hurs, iPad in hand, hping t get the perfect sht f a grasshpper.
Over the years, I’ve changed in many ways, but my lve f nature and science has never faded. Since I entered high schl, I have been in the Science Olympiad team. That ld sense f wnder I felt as a child when studying animals came rushing back. Every day brings new adventures. One day, I might be explring the birth f the universe as an astrnmer; the next, I culd be studying the rcks beneath my feet as a gelgist.
I’m lucky t have s many amazing teammates. Tgether, we’ve run tests t perfect the design f ur mdel car. We’ve pretended t be frensic (法医的) scientists, slving “crimes” by studying different bjects.
I used t prefer wrking alne. I nce thught a team culd succeed nly if everyne was an expert. Wrking with my Science Olympiad teammates has changed my mind. I’ve learned that teamwrk isn’t just abut dividing up the wrk — it’s abut cmbining strengths. N great achievement, frm landing n the mn t mapping the human genme, has ever been made alne. It always takes thusands f peple wrking tgether t make the impssible pssible.

Bamb is a highly renewable resurce, and its cellulse (纤维素) fibres can be turned int a hard, easy-t-shape plastic fr use in cars and husehld appliances. This bamb-based plastic is nt nly as strng and lng-lasting as cmmn plastics fr such uses, but als can be reused and break dwn easily in sil.
Plastics made frm living things, r biplastics, are increasingly ppular, but they still make up nly arund half a percent f glbal plastic prductin. This is partly because they are nt as strng as il-based plastics and can’t be easily used in cmmn factry prductin prcesses.
Nw, Dawei Zha at Shenyang University f Chemical Technlgy in China and his team have develped a way t prduce plastic frm bamb cellulse, which can match r even beat the qualities f many widely used plastics. “Bamb’s rapid grwth makes it a highly renewable resurce, thugh its current uses are still largely traditinal,” says Zha.
Zha’s team first treated the bamb with certain chemicals and an acid, breaking dwn the strng chemical bnds t prduce a mixture f smaller cellulse mlecules (分子). Adding alchl then made these mlecules rearrange int a strng, slid plastic. Andrew Dve at the University f Birmingham, UK, says the plastic’s tughness is similar t cmmnly used engineering plastics. Hwever, its rigidity means its pssible uses aren’t the mst widespread. “It’s nt ging t replace the main plastics used in packaging,” says Dve. “But while it’s aiming at a smaller grup f engineering plastics, it culd still help reduce wrries abut getting enugh material fr sme plastics we use nw. ”
Althugh it isn’t as cheap as sme cmmn plastics, Zha’s team fund that it can be cmpletely recycled while keeping 90% f its riginal strength, which can lwer prductin csts, making it mre lucrative. They als reprted that it breaks dwn naturally within 50 days, althugh similar claims fr ther s-called bidegradable (可生物降解的) plastics have nt always prven true.
8.What is an advantage f bamb-based plastic?
A.It is mre durable than il-based plastics.
B.It is recyclable and can break dwn easily.
C.Its fibres are stable and hld the shape well.
D.Its prductin requires n chemical treatment.

A.By rearranging cellulse mlecules with alchl.
B.By mixing bamb with engineering plastics.
C.By breaking chemical bnds t get larger mlecules.
D.By heating bamb with special chemicals.
10.What can be inferred frm Dve’s cmment n Zha’s bamb plastic?
A.It is t rigid t be used in any packaging prducts.
B.It is tugher than traditinal engineering plastics.
C.It will replace cmmn packaging plastics in the near future.
D.It may serve specific engineering purpses despite its limits.
11.What des “lucrative” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Ecnmically attractive.B.Structurally strng.
C.Easily recyclable.D.Highly durable.
“Call me Ishmael.” This famus literary pening line is ne I, as a mathematician, am embarrassed t admit I never mved past fr a lng time. Fr me, Mby-Dick was a bk that remained unread n my “shuld-have-read” list, and I never gt arund t it. My intellectual pririties simply did nt include lng nvels abut whales. That changed when I heard a friend mentin it cntained a reference t cyclids (摆线), beautiful mathematical curves that have fascinated thinkers fr centuries.
Feeling curius, I finally read Mby-Dick and was delighted t find it full f mathematical metaphrs. I realized it is nt just Melville; authrs like Tlsty and Jyce als include mathematical ideas in their wrks. Yet, the deeper and brader cnnectins between mathematics and literature have nt received enugh attentin. In fact, the tw are ften seen as cmpletely separate. In sme educatin systems, students even have t chse between fcusing n either math and science r n the humanities. This chice is unfrtunate, because the tw fields are deeply cnnected, and understanding this link can greatly increase ur appreciatin f bth.
This imagined line between math and literature is actually a mdern idea. Fr mst f histry, mathematics was part f every educated persn’s cultural awareness. Plat’s Republic, written arund the 4th century BC, suggested an ideal educatin cvering bth arithmetic and language skills. There is a deeper reasn fr this cnnectin: the universe is full f underlying structure, pattern and rder, and mathematics is the best tl we have fr understanding it — that’s why mathematics is ften called the language f the universe. Since humans are part f this universe, ur creative expressins, like literature, naturally shw a tendency fr pattern and structure.
The sense f balance we get frm a great nvel, where all parts fit tgether perfectly, mirrrs what a mathematician experiences with a beautiful prf. Literature is filled with ideas that a mathematically sensitive mind can detect. Therefre, seeing math and literature as part f the same pursuit — t understand ur wrld — adds new dimensins f enjyment t ur favrite writing.
12.What initially mtivated the authr t read Mby-Dick?
A.A sense f shame fr nt having read a classic.
B.The desire t imprve his mathematical skills.
C.A friend’s remark abut its mathematical cntent.
D.His lng-standing interest in stries abut whales.
13.What is the authr’s attitude twards the educatinal trend f separating subjects?
A.Supprtive.B.Indifferent.C.Neutral.D.Disapprving.
14.Why des the authr mentin Plat’s Republic in paragraph 3?
A.T criticize mdern educatin systems.
B.T explain the rigin f mathematical curves.
C.T shw the histrical separatin f math and literature.
D.T illustrate the ancient integratin f math and literature.
15.Which statement will the authr agree with accrding t the text?
A.Great nvels depend heavily n mathematical ideas.
B.Mathematicians are better at appreciating literature.
C.Recgnizing math-literature cnnectins bsts reading jy.
D.Great nvels and math prfs ffer a different sense f balance.
As a seven-time Olympic medalist, Beard tried traditinal meditatin (冥想) in her training. This practice requires stillness and quiet, asking peple t sit with their thughts and turn inward. 16 That was because she failed t grasp its true meaning and even cnsidered it ttally unsuitable fr her active, easily distracted persnality.
After her retirement, Beard fund walking meditatin accidentally. She walked utdrs with relaxed steps while listening t her favurite music, which instantly brught her a sense f peace in the chas f daily life. This immediate sense f calm cnvinced her t explre walking meditatin further. 17
Walking meditatin is nt nly helpful fr athletes but als easy fr cmmn peple. Its simplicity and flexibility are majr advantages fr newcmers. 18 The key is a slw, steady pace and a cnscius fcus n the immediate experience — the feel f the grund, the tuch f the air, and the sunds f yur surrundings, anywhere frm parks t neighbrhds.
Furthermre, walking meditatin benefits physical and mental health. Physically, it imprves balance, strengthens leg muscles and stabilizes heart rate, supprting verall fitness. Mentally, it clears the mind, eases wrry, and encurages a mre psitive utlk. 19 It des this by prmting the release f pleasure-inducing hrmnes such as dpamine. Lng-term practice can als help develp a strnger mentality t deal with life’s difficulties.
20 Different frm traditinal meditatin, it replaces ttal physical stillness with gentle mvement while maintaining mental fcus. This cmbinatin f mvement and fcus makes it a unique frm f meditatin.
A.Traditinal meditatin requires patience.
B.Even a shrt-time practice can lift yur spirits.
C.Hwever, as an active persn, she gave it up later.
D.Therefre, practicing it requires prfessinal qualificatin.
E.It demands neither special equipment nr a dedicated space.
F.It then gradually became a daily habit, relieving her lng - term anxiety.
G.Walking meditatin ffers a gd chice fr thse wh cannt keep still.
