At the Paris 2024 Olympics, sprt climbing featured tw medal events fr men and wmen: Speed and a cmbined Bulder & Lead event. Behind the scenes, there is a crucial but ften unseen figure—Martin Hammerer, head f the experienced team respnsible fr the Lead rutes, wh has been setting rutes internatinally since 2007.
“The actual design tk place at the climbing wall. The Internatinal Federatin f Sprt Climbing (IFSC) pre-selected the material, which we then used t set the rutes,” Hammerer explained when asked abut his wrk in Paris. “We started with the finals—which was the highlight—and wrked backward t the semi-finals. After cmpleting a rute, we phtgraphed it, remved and stred the hlds fr later use.”
The fcus fr the rutesetters is t ffer a challenging but als fair cmpetitin. Rutes fr the cmbined Bulder & Lead event were carefully designed t ensure that specialists in ne discipline didn’t have an unfair advantage. “Our aim is t ffer a balanced cmpetitin,” Hammerer said. “Fr the pdiums (领奖台), the athletes have t be really strng in bth disciplines.”
Rutesetting relies heavily n the team’s creativity. The style has changed ver the past 15 years, with tday’s rutes lser and mre dynamic. “The materials and structures have als changed greatly,” Hammerer said. “Every seasn we adapt t the athletes anew.”
Rutesetting used t be quite independent and greatly influenced climbing style. “But nw, federatins set training rutes fr athletes. When we see this n scial media, we get new input fr ur wrk,” Hammerer reflected.
As Hammerer nce said, “Climbers evlve, and s must we.” He cntinues t shape the future f climbing—ne rute, ne challenge, ne stry at a time.
24. What des Hammerer d?

Tday, petry and science are ften cnsidered t be mutually exclusive (互相排斥) career paths. But that wasn’t always the case. The mathematician Ada Lvelace and the physicist James Clerk Maxwell were bth accmplished pets. The pet Jhn Keats was a licensed surgen. Cmbining the tw practices fell ut f favr in the 1800s. But translating research int lyrics, haiku, and ther petic frms is reappearing amng scientists as they lk fr alternative ways t inspire thers with their findings.
“Petry is a great tl fr questining the wrld,” says Sam Illingwrth, a pet and a gescientist wh wrks at the University f Western Australia. Thrugh wrkshps and a new science-petry jurnal, called Cnsilience, Illingwrth is helping scientists t translate their latest results int pems that can attract appreciatin frm thse utside f their immediate scientific field.
Stephany Mazn, a scientist frm the University f Helsinki in Finland, jined ne f Illingwrth’s wrkshps. In the wrkshp, she was gruped with ther scientists and tasked with writing a haiku, a 17-syllable-lng pem, which sptlighted water, a fluid that featured in all f the grup members’ research prjects. “It was a lt f fun, and surprisingly easy t write the pem,” Mazn says. She plans t cntinue writing. “We d a disservice (伤害) t urselves t think that scientists can’t be artistic and that art can’t be used t cmmunicate scientific ideas,” Mazn says.
That viewpint is eched by Illingwrth, wh thinks current science cmmunicatin initiatives rely t ften n public lectures with their hands-ff PwerPint slides. “Actually, when science cmmunicatin invlves writing and sharing pems, it invites a tw-way dialgue between experts and nnexperts,” he says. Scientist-pet Manjula Silva, an educatr at Imperial Cllege Lndn, agrees. Petry prvides a way t translate cmplex scientific cncepts int a language that everyne can understand, Silva says.
Scientists and pets are bth trying t understand the wrld and cmmunicate that understanding with thers. The gap between scientists and pets is less than peple might think. We’re all just peple with hpefully really interesting things t say and t share.
28. What is the purpse f mentining the famus peple in paragraph 1?

A. Prmte a new science-petry jurnal.
B. Inspire utsiders t pursue their careers in science.
C. Encurage science cmmunicatin thrugh pems.
D. Get scientists t exchange ideas abut the latest research.
30. What des Illingwrth think f the present ways f science cmmunicatin?
A. Cmplex. B. Creative. C. Effective. D. Traditinal
31. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?

B. Scientists and Pets Think Alike
C. Petry: A Great Tl t Questin the Wrld
D. Science Cmmunicatin: A Tw-way Dialgue

Bananas grw best in full sun. T prtect their skins frm harmful UV rays, their peels prduce a natural sunscreen. Taylr Maguire, a student in New Yrk, has uncvered the secrets behind this natural prtectin.
Sunscreens prtect ur skin against harmful slar rays. Hwever, Taylr ntes sme f their chemicals may cause cancer. When these chemicals wash ff int the envirnment, they can harm wildlife—fr instance, certain mineral-based sunscreens weaken freshwater animals’ swimming ability. In high enugh cncentratins, she adds, they can even kill sme rganisms. This led Taylr t search fr alternatives t mineral-based sunscreens.
Believing that bananas had their wn natural UV prtectin, Taylr prcessed banana peels by heating, freezing, and mixing them t get tw extracts. The first was a water-based extract, cntaining nly cmpnents that can disslve (溶解) in water. The secnd was a nnplar extract, made up f factrs that can’t disslve in water. Using a spectrphtmeter—a device that measures hw much light a liquid takes in—Taylr cnfirmed that bth extracts tk in UV light.
Next, Taylr put planarians, a type f flatwrm living in water, int different dishes cntaining different slutins and put them under strng UV light fr 10 minutes. If the wrm’s mvement slwed r stpped, she tk that t mean the light damaged them. Her five test slutins included her tw extracts, a drugstre sunscreen slutin, plain water and glycerl (甘油)。
The result? The nnplar banana extract, the glycerl and the mineral-based sunscreen appeared fatal t the wrms, she fund. But planarians survived just fine in the water-based extract.
The next step is t figure ut exactly what chemical prvided the water-based extract’s UV prtectin. Recgnizing that, she says, culd allw fr a new kind f ec-friendly, banana-based sunscreen.
32. What inspired Taylr t seek alternatives t mineral-based sunscreens?
A. The natural sunscreen qualities f banana peels.
B. Her skin’s respnse t mineral-based sunscreens.
C. Her gal t develp a mre affrdable sunscreen.
D. The eclgical impacts f mineral-based sunscreens.
33. Why did Taylr use planarians in her experiment?
A. T study the behavir f animals living in water.
B. T measure the intake f UV by banana extracts.
C. T cmpare the effectiveness f different UV prtectins.
D. T examine the chemicals cntained by water-based extract.
34. What des the underlined wrd “fatal” prbably mean in paragraph 5?
A. Deadly B. Pisnus C. Harmful D. Dangerus.
35. What is the next step Taylr plans t take in her research?
A. T find ut the chemical blcking UV.
B. T test the extracts n ther types f animals.
C. T create a new type f mineral-based sunscreen.
D. T experiment banana-based sunscreen n human skin.
