In my ld life, I wasn’t a “mrning persn”. Then I had children, whse needs demanded an early start. Nw they’re lder, but I can’t shake the early-rising rutine. They’re the nly part f the day reserved fr just my wn needs. I get genuine satisfactin frm my early prductivity. I’ve written mre, exercised mre cnsistently, and apprached challenges clearly.
But every transfrmatin cmes with a price. And mine has been paid in evening hurs — thse crucial mments when families recnnect, when teenagers may pen up, and when marriages deepen. I have becme a persn wh gives the best f herself t the mrning and ffers nly the wrst t the night. My husband prefers t stay up late, s he handles the evening tasks. It’s an efficient arrangement, but it has created an unintended difference: I get ur daughters’ sleepy mrnings and he gets their sharing nighttime mments. The cst feels particularly high as my girls, nw 12 and 16, have mved tward a later bedtime. Teenagers are active at night by bilgical design. My fading evening energy has influenced all my relatinships.
I wnder if this is simply aging. But I suspect that in making the mst f the early hurs, I have changed nt just my sleep schedule but my time with family. The energy I pur int mrning wrkuts and emails has t cme frm smewhere. That smewhere is everywhere else.
I knw I’ll never cme alive at midnight, but I am learning t stretch the bundaries f my days. The balance isn’t abut becming less f a mrning persn, but abut leaving space fr cnnectin even when it desn’t match my bdy’s clck.

Sme kids struggle with math. Nw, scientists have pinpinted sme f the specific thinking prcesses and brain regins that might explain the reasn.
In the new study, researchers tested secnd-and third-grade kids with and withut math learning disabilities by shwing them tw numbers frm 1 t 9 and giving the kids a few secnds t pick which number they thught was larger. The researchers recrded hw lng it tk kids t answer questins and bserved kids’ brain activities using an MRI scanner. The team analyzed the data abut the kids’ perfrmance and behavir using a cmplex mathematical analysis designed t find patterns in behavir, like hw carefully children answered thrughut the experiment and hw they changed their behavir after mistakes. They then cmpared thse behavir patterns with brain activity.
“We weren’t interested in the perfrmance f this numeral task but hw they apprached the task differently between the tw grups,” says Hyesang Chang, a cgnitive neurscientist at San Jsé State University in Califrnia.
Frm the MRI data, Chang and clleagues fund that the lack f cautin in kids with math learning disabilities when giving answers was assciated with lwer activity in the middle frntal gyrus, a brain regin assciated with prcessing numbers, fcus, impulse cntrl and adapting t changing circumstances. Meanwhile, nt slwing dwn after errrs was assciated with lwer activity in anther brain regin invlved in detecting errrs and mnitring perfrmance.
Identifying these brain regins suggests that explaining differences in math skills is mre cmplex than finding ne part f the brain that handles math and numbers. “Instead, the study helps us knw brain areas that prcess infrmatin and find errrs are key,” says Marie Arsalidu, a develpmental cgnitive neurscientist at Yrk University in Trnt, wh wasn’t invlved in the study. “We’re learning that there’re many regins invlved.”
One insight f the new wrk is that there are hidden mechanisms that differentiate students wh may ptentially have math learning difficulties. Future interventins culd invlve teaching kids t think abut hw they are slving prblems and even teaching them different prblem-slving strategies.
28. Hw did the researchers cnduct the study?
A. They tested the kids’ expressive ability.
B. They cntrlled the kids’ behavir patterns.
C. They graded the kids’ academic perfrmance.
D. They evaluated the kids’ numeral task respnse.
29. What may affect the kids’ math ability accrding t the study?
A. The efficiency f prcessing numbers.
B. The willingness t make an adjustment.
C. The activity level f certain brain regins.
D. The cmpetence in mnitring perfrmance.
30. What may help kids with math learning disabilities?
A. Intense training.B. Prper instructins.
C. Insightful answers.D. Cmplex mechanisms.
31. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. What lies behind math learning difficulties?

A wildfire burns in the hills f a Ls Angeles suburb, leaping frm ne land f dry brush t anther as it appraches a grup f hmes. The landscaping at the first huse burns, but the huse itself stubbrnly refuses t catch fire: any small flames that start alng its walls r rf quickly die ut. There’s n water in sight — the flames are being stpped by sund waves. This kind f fire suppressin may sn play a vital rle in fighting wildfires.
The key ingredients fr a fire are heat, fuel and xygen; take ne away, and the flames fade. Sund waves can kill a fire by pushing xygen mlecules (分子) away frm the fuel, preventing the fire getting the air it needs t cntinue burning. Gef Bruder, wh researched heat energy transfrmatin at NASA, c-funded Snic Fire Tech t build a sund-generating machine fr this purpse. “It’s basically vibrating (振动) the xygen faster than the fuel can use it, s yu blck the chemical reactin,” Bruder says.
“The influence f sund n flames is well knwn,” says Albert Simeni, head f the department f fire prtectin engineering at Wrcester Plytechnic Institute in Massachusetts. “The challenge is t expand the technlgy withut creating disrupting r even damaging sund effects.” Snic slves this challenge by using infra sund (次声波). While previus effrts used sund waves in the range f 30 t 60 hertz, which can be prduced with simpler equipment, Snic stays at r belw 20 hertz. These waves can’t be heard by peple, and they travel farther than higher-frequency waves.
“Sund waves can affect fire strngly, but they wrk nly n small flames,” says Arnaud Truvé, chair f the University f Maryland’s department f fire prtectin engineering. Nevertheless, hmewners and cmpanies are ready t give it a try: Snic is wrking with tw Califrnia cmpanies t demnstrate its technlgy. Hmewners have als signed cntracts with the cmpany, which is aiming t have 50 pilt tests early in 2026.
32. What des the underlined wrd “suppressin” mean in paragraph 1?
A. Preventin.B. Stimulatin.C. Detectin.D. Prmtin.
33. Hw des the sund-generating machine wrk?
A. It cuts ff the chemical energy.B. It takes away the essential fuel.
C. It speeds up the xygen vibratin.D. It cls dwn the heat temperature.
34. Hw was the prblem f sund effects slved?
A. By imprving simpler equipment.B. By bradening wave frequency range.

根据第一段中“There’s n water in sight — the flames are being stpped by sund waves. This kind f fire suppressin may sn play a vital rle in fighting wildfires.(眼前没有水——火焰正被声波熄灭。这种suppressin火的方式可能很快在扑灭野火方面发挥至关重要的作用)”可知,眼不见一滴水,而火焰正被声波阻挡,可知这种技术是用于灭火的,即防止火灾的发生或蔓延因此,suppressin意为“抑制、阻挡”。故选A。
根据第二段中“It’s basically vibrating (振动) the xygen faster than the fuel can use it, s yu blck the chemical reactin.(它基本上是以比燃料使用氧气更快的速度振动氧气,从而阻止化学反应)”可知,声音发生器是通过加快氧气的振动速度来阻止化学反应,从而达到灭火的目的。

上文“In the age f cnstant digital expsure, there is a widespread prblem — sleep culd be challenging t get. (在持续数字暴露的时代,有一个普遍的问题——睡眠可能难以获得)”指出了数字时代睡眠困难的普遍现象。G选项“Many peple are lying in bed with their minds verthinking. (许多人躺在床上,大脑却在过度思考)”承接上文,将“睡眠困难”这一普遍问题具体化为“睡前过度思考”这一核心现象,引出下文“They are struggling with nnstp infrmatin, unfinished text message exchanges, strng desires t check scial media, wrk wrries, and self-reflectins. (他们正与源源不断的信息、未完成的短信交流、强烈的刷社交媒体欲望、工作焦虑和自我反思作斗争)”,具体描述了过度思考的表现。故选G项。
【37题详解】
上文“When yur mind believes it must hld n t every thught, these thughts can feel like planes circling t tuch dwn. (当你的大脑认为必须抓住每一个想法时,这些想法就会像等待降落的飞机一样盘旋不去)”用“飞机盘旋”比喻思绪纷繁、无法安放的状态。A选项“S, land them n a paper runway. (所以,让它们降落在纸质的跑道上吧)”承接上文,用“S”引出针对这一比喻的解决方案——将思绪写下来,动词“land(着陆,降落)”与上文“飞机盘旋”的比喻形成巧妙的呼应。故选A项。
下文“Any gathering f mindfulness experts wuld prvide enugh evidence f hw verthinking lives in imagined futures and in replayed (ften mistakenly) pasts. Healthy sleep lives nly in the here and nw. S, feel the warmth f yur blanket, the cmfrt f yur bdy n yur bed, and that super pleasant feeling f letting yurself g befre falling asleep. 【39题详解】
上文“S, feel the warmth f yur blanket, the cmfrt f yur bdy n yur bed, and that super pleasant feeling f letting yurself g befre falling asleep. (所以,感受毯子的温暖、身体在床上舒适的感觉,以及入睡前那种放下一切的愉悦)”介绍了通过感官体验将思绪拉回当下的具体做法。D选项“This helps win yur sleep back instantly. (这有助于让你立刻找回睡眠)”承接上文,用“This”指代上文描述的“感受温暖、舒适、放松”这一行为,指出其直接效果——帮助入睡。故选D项。
【40题详解】
上文“Yur gal fr a gd night’s sleep is nt t push all yur thughts away. (一夜好眠的目标不是把所有想法都推开)”否定了“清空思绪”这一常见误解。F选项“Rather, the best way is t respnd t them prperly. (相反,最好的方式是恰当地回应它们)”承接上文,用“Rather”与上文的错误目标构成转折,提出正确的做法——恰当地回应想法。下文“Gently reminding yurself hw far yu have cme in life will help yu stp wrrying abut what yu have t d. (温和地提醒自己你已经走了多远,会帮助你停止担心那些必须做的事情)”则具体阐述了如何“恰当地回应”——用积极的自我提醒来应对思绪。故选F项。
