When we sit dwn t read a gd bk, we rarely take a pause t pnder ver the wnder
f the act we are perfrming. In the case f true literature, at least, reading is nt simply the
prcess f scanning a series f symbls n a page and trying t mentally encde the infrmatin
they represent; it is a much mre rganic experience. As the wrds flw int ur minds, we are
cntinually piecing tgether a strange and unique universe that is a fusin f ur wn wrld, the
characters’, and the authr’s. Unlike the marks n the page, which appear the same t everyne,
the stries that frm in ur minds are curiusly persnal mixtures; n tw readers’ experiences are ever quite alike.
This prcess is what authr J. R. R. Tlkien referred t as “sub-creatin,” and it is a
fundamental and particular prperty f the written wrd. Tlkien himself wuld likely have been hrrified at the recent series f mvies based n his Lrd f the rings nvels, despite their success and critical acclaim; he believed that the ability t visualize characters and scenes fr neself was the right and privilege f the reader alne. I cannt help but agree, fr anytime a filmmaker shares his inner visin f a bk with yu, he simultaneusly rbs yu f yur wn. Try as yu might,
yu’ll never quite regain the pure, persnal image f a stry yu nce had; it will frever be tarnished(玷污) with vestiges(残余) f the figures yu saw n the silver screen.
Nw, I d nt mean t say that mvies are n gd, nr even that it is impssible t make a gd mvie based n a bk; I simply wish filmmakers were mre aware f the way their
adaptatins degrade the public’s enjyment f the riginal wrks f literature.
8 .What is the authr’s cncern?
A .The extent t which literacy in ur sciety has diminished.
B .The limiting effects film can have n peple’s imaginatins.
C .The ways in which film has psitively impacted the literary field.
D .The difficult task that filmmakers have in frnt f them.
9 .What is suggested in the first sentence f paragraph 2?
A .The reader’s imaginative prcess is less nble than that f the writer.
B .Writing is the nly art frm that truly ccupies ne’s intellect.
C .Tlkien wuld never write bks if he knew they wuld be made int mvies.
D .The act f reading necessarily engages the imaginatin f the reader.
10 .Which f the fllwing situatin wuld invlve the same kind f"inner visin"?
A .A screenwriter pens a stry inspired by deeply persnal memries.
B .A serius writer takes a break frm her career t create nvelizatins f films.
C .A publisher decides t add mre diagrams t a statistics textbk.
D .A pem full f vivid imagery is used by an artist as the basis fr il paintings.
11 .Which f the fllwing ccasin best describes the phrase"public’s enjyment"?
A .Peple are free t envisin the authr’s wrds.
B .Anyne can understand difficult literary wrks.
C .Mviegers actually prefer a film adaptatin t the riginal bk.
D .Peple read mre because n ther surces f entertainment are available.

In rbtics, as in s many things, small is beautiful. The truble is that making them really small is nearly impssible. “Building rbts perating independently at sizes belw ne millimeter is incredibly difficult,” says rbticist Marc Miskin at the University f Pennsylvania. “The field has essentially been stuck n this prblem fr 40 years.”
Nw researchers at Penn and the University f Michigan have created the wrld’s smallest, fully prgrammable, autnmus rbts, packing significant capacities int a device smaller than a grain f salt. They are barely visible t the naked eye yet able t sense their envirnment,
respnd t it and mve arund in cmplex patterns. And they run n extremely small quantities f energy and gain pwer frm light.
“These are the smallest nes that I have seen,” said Kevin Chen, an MIT rbticist wh
wasn’t invlved. “This is an exciting advance fr the nanrbtics(纳米机器人学).”
Miskin’s team at Penn prvided the prpulsin system. The rbts wrk in liquid
envirnments and mve by generating a tiny electrical field that pushes n nearby water
mlecules. Lacking tiny arms and legs, which are hard t make and easy t break, the rbts are quite durable and can swim fr mnths as lng as they have an energy surce.
Tiny rbts d have ptential medical functins, said Miskin, such as precisely reprting lcal temperatures inside the bdy r retrieving tissue frm the base f a tth fr testing. Rbts n vyages in ur bdies culd even be pwered by light since sme kinds f light can pass
thrugh human tissue. But ultrasund culd als wrk, said Miskin.
David Blaauw’s lab at Michigan created the minuscule nbard cmputer that permits the rbts t be prgrammed by light pulses t respnd independently t their envirnment. Each
rbt, equipped with its wn brain, culd be given different rders s that different rbts culd undertake different parts f a larger task, such as pathfinding r mapping a small space.
“We designed a special cmputer instructin that encdes a value, such as the measured temperature, in the wiggles f a little dance the rbt perfrms,” said Blaauw. “We then lk at this dance thrugh a micrscpe with a camera and decde frm the wiggles what the rbts are saying t us. ” The wiggles becme data that can be analyzed “t autmatically extract the value that the rbt is cmmunicating,” Blaauw said.
12 .What is a majr challenge in building sub-millimeter rbts accrding t Marc Miskin?
A .The unbearable cst t manufacture them.
B .Their inability t d field wrk independently.
C .The lack f research funding fr decades.
D .Achieving autnmus peratin at that scale.
13 .The wrd “wiggles” in the last paragraph mst likely refers t the rbts’ ________.
A .pwer surces B .cmmunicatin means
C .structural cmpnents D .mvement patterns
14 .What is the main purpse f the passage?
A .T criticize the slw prgress in rbtics ver the past decades.
B .T stress the technical difficulties in prducing nanrbts.
C .T intrduce a breakthrugh in the nanrbtics cmmunity.
D .T prmte nvel energy surces fr futuristic nanrbts.
15 .What can be inferred abut the newly develped rbts frm the passage?
A .They culd perfrm medical tasks withut physical cntact with tissue.
B .These visible rbts are mvable, durable and sustainable.
C .Their life span is directly affected fr the lack f mechanical arms.
D .Their applicatin is nt that rsy in terms f mapping ut space.

The Little Spider Prank That Changed Me
A few years ag, I was ging thrugh ne f the mst difficult perids f my life. I had been wrking as a waitress in a ccktail bar when I suddenly went blind. One minute I was
serving a martini; the next, large black blbs were flating acrss my peripheral visin.
Then, ver the next few hurs, I was plunged int ttal darkness.
I have had a chrnic eye cnditin since I was three years ld: uveitis(葡萄膜炎), which causes inflammatin inside the eye, and secndary glaucma(青光眼), which invlves damage t the ptic nerve. In my mid-teens, I lst sight in my left eye; nw, at 21 years ld, the right eye
fllwed suit.
T add insult t injury, a wave f ecnmic uncertainty hit, leaving me brke and
unemplyed. I was frced t mve ut f Lndn, the city I adred, and back in with my family in Berkshire. Lsing my independence just after I graduated frm university hadn’t been part f the plan.
The dctrs didn’t knw why my right eye had failed. They tried several treatments and I
was waiting t see, fr want f a better wrd, if the latest ne wuld wrk. I’d already had a
sterid injectin int the back f my eye, which prved fruitless. I was then prescribed a huge
dse f ral sterids–and if they didn’t wrk, my future ptins appeared limited. I had n idea ifI wuld ever be able t see again.
I was envius that all my friends were mving frward with their lives: new relatinships, new jbs, travelling. Everything I had thught my life was ging t be had changed and my future felt like it was n lnger in my wn hands.

25. A 推理判断题:B 项原文是“reach ut t lcal fster hmes(联系当地寄养家庭)”, 并非亲自前往;C 项“All”绝对,原文是“Many”;D 项原文是钓鱼过程中传递人生道理,而非“用钓鱼的人生道理教孩子” 。A 项与原文“Big Will, as the kids call him”一致。
26. D 细节理解题:根据第一段末尾:“The tw fished tgether…William saw psitive
changes … ‘That’s when I realized that Gd was calling me t help fatherless kids,’ he says.
8 .B 9 .D 10 .D 11 .A
28. B 主旨大意题:根据“I simply wish filmmakers were mre aware f the way their adaptatins degrade the public’s enjyment f the riginal wrks f literature.
29. D 推理判断题:根据“This prcess is what authr J. R. Tlkien referred t as ‘sub-creatin,’ and it is a fundamental and particular prperty f the written wrd.

根据“ … the wiggles what the rbts are saying t us. ”和“ … the value that the rbt is cmmunicating”可推断机器人的 wiggles 是一种“通信交流的手段”。

41 .extinctin 42 .n 43 .supprting 44 .thirds 45 .yearly
60. are estimated 被动语态:“it is estimated that…/sth be estimated t d…”
estimated。
61. extinctin 名词:“n the brink f…”
65. yearly 形容词:修饰名词 basis,用形容词 yearly,表“每年的”,“n a yearly basis”= every year,表“每年”。
