Last April, after I published an essay abut petry as part f Natinal Petry Mnth, an editr tld me he’d
ften thught that the wrld wuld be a better place if we had a pem delivered t ur drstep each mrning
instead f a newspaper. As a newspaperman, I’m nt ready t discurage readership f each day’s editin, but
maybe there’s smething t be said fr reading a newspaper and a pem each mrning.
All f that has led t a small experiment. In an effrt t keep a little petry in my life lng after Natinal
Petry Mnth had passed, I reslved t read at least ne pem a day after reading thrugh the newspaper ver
breakfast. Thanks t tw digital services that deliver petry right t my email inbx, it’s been an easy reslutin t
      keep.
Many public radi listeners are familiar with The Writer’s Almanac, a five-minute bradcast hsted by
Garrisn Keillr that airs n lts f statins arund the cuntry. Each day’s editin includes a handful f facts abut

pem a day has als been like an intellectual vitamin (维生素) , giving me a brief taste f literature even n busy
days. Last April, I wndered if I culd remind myself t read a pem each mrning. Nw, deep in summer, I
wnder if I culd ever d withut it.
      4. What did the editr think f petry?
      A. It culd imprve ur daily life. B. It was as imprtant as newspapers.
      C. It had a small but faithful readership. D. It shuld be cmpsed in the mrning.
      5. Hw did the authr cnduct his experiment?
      A. By listening t radis and writing emails. B. By cntributing pems t a newspaper.
      C. By creating reslutins ver breakfast. D. By making use f nline services.
      6. What can be learned abut The Writer's Almanac?
      A. It is a ppular daily radi prgram. B. It marks its twentieth anniversary in 2025.
      C. It features pems written by Garrisn Keillr. D. It highlights unpublished pems n weekends.

Secnd place is just the first lser. While the cmpetitive spirit may be as natural as breathing air, it desn’t
always lead t human flurishing and can create misery. Frtunately, there is a frmula t slve this prblem:
instead f always ging fr gld, sht fr the brnze.
Thugh secnd place may be the first lser, third place can be the real winner regarding happiness and
lngevity. In a 1995 study, schlars systematically cded the emtinal reactins f silver and brnze medalists in
the 1992 Summer Olympic Games. Using slw-mtin ftage captured bth immediately after their events and
later n the awards pdium (领 奖 台 ), researchers fund the brnze winners appeared cnsistently happier n
average than the silver medalists. Over 80% f brnze medalists exhibited genuine smiles, a figure that was nearly
duble that bserved amng silver medalists. Mrever, every brnze medalist’s smile lasted lnger than the
average smile bserved amng the silver medalists.
Mre recent research has lked at the life span f all three medalist categries. A 2018 study tracked the
average lngevity f thse representing the U.S. in the Olympic Games frm 1904 t 1936 and fund that the
athlete whse best perfrmance was silver lived t 72. Gld medalists beat this by fur years, living t 76. But first
prize in lngevity went t the brnze medalists, wh lived t 78.
The study had a handy explanatin fr this discrepancy: “Unsatisfactry cmpetitin utcmes may adversely
affect health.” In ther wrds, silver medalists see themselves as the first lser because they lk up t the tp step
and cmpare themselves nly with the gld medalists, whereas the brnze winners cmpare themselves favrably
with all the thers wh never made it nt the pdium at all. This thery shws the difference between upward and
dwnward scial cmparisn. When we cmpare urselves with thse wh have mre mney, pwer, r
achievements, we ften feel like, well, lsers. It tends t lwer mtivatin and increase stress. In cntrast,
dwnward cmparisn makes peple feel better abut themselves and, thus, happier.
The wrldly happiness strategy f striving fr gld every day is flish. It tends t lwer the intrinsic
mtivatin, and thus enjyment that peple btain frm their activities. The principle at wrk here is trying t
imprve yur wn past perfrmance and the nly persn t whm yu will have t cmpare yurself is yu.
      8. What can be learned frm the 1995 study?
      A. Silver medalists shwed less happiness than brnze winners.
      B. Silver medalists’ smiling frequency was clse t that f gld medalists.
      C. The average brnze medalist’s smile lasted lnger than every silver medalist’s.
      D. The emtins f bth medalists were unchanged frm the events t the pdium.
      9. What is the cause f the difference in medalists’ life span?
      A. The stress frm dwnward scial cmparisn.
      B. The mtivatin frm upward scial cmparisn.
      C. The effect f different types f scial cmparisn.
      D. The failure t lk up t the tp after the cmpetitin.
      10. What des the writer advise us t d t achieve happiness?
      A. Learn frm the tp perfrmers. B. Try t be the best in every field.
      C. Cmmit t ne’s cnsistent persnal grwth. D. Strengthen the mtivatin t btain achievement.
      11. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the passage?
      A. The Triumph f Cming in Third B. The Prblem f Human Cmpetitin
      C. The Mechanism f Scial Cmparisn D. The Psychlgy f the Olympic Medalists
      【答案】8. A 9. C 10. C 11. A
      D
The danger f a majr slar strm is nw at its highest in ver a decade. As the Sun reaches the peak f its
activity cycle, the dds f such a strm hitting Earth rise alng with its assciated risks, including blackuts,
disabled satellites and damaged cell phnes and GPS netwrks. In the mst extreme situatins, sme pwer grids
culd be kncked ut fr weeks r even mnths.
But that is the wrst case. In the face f such ptential disaster, ur best hpe is t learn mre abut the
Sun-Earth system, mnitr slar activity and develp ur ability t predict space weather. With the right
precautins (预防措施), slar activity culd be a net psitive fr humanity, as it cnstantly prtects us against
harmful radiatin frm beynd the Slar System. S whether we risk the dangers r reap the benefits f living with
the Sun will cme dwn t the same thing: ur ability t predict and prepare fr what ur star is ging t d next.
The whle predictin prcess is like frecasting nrmal weather. The mre yu understand the system, the
better yu can predict what it will d. This is n easy task when it cmes t ur star. The Sun is cmplex and nt
yet well understd, and scientists must als get a better handle n hw its emissins travel thrugh space and
affect Earth. Cmpared t frecasting the nrmal weather, ur space weather predictins are abut 50 years behind.
That’s why missins like the Parker Slar Prbe — the first spacecraft ever t tuch the Sun — are all the
mre imprtant. Launched in 2018, Parker has already made several discveries abut hw the Sun transprts
energy utward int space. The spacecraft’s data have helped scientists imprve their ability t predict exactly
when an event at the Sun will later reach Earth. Establishing that timing is imprtant, because it’s an essential first
step t an early warning system that wuld help avid the wrst situatin.
Yet ur current prjects are nt enugh. Parker is nt designed t act as a full-time warning system, and it can
nly study the Sun frm ne angle at a time. S a grup f satellites arund the Sun are recmmended t
cmpletely mnitr the Sun and always be ready t send warnings back t Earth.
      12. Which f the fllwing is clsest in meaning t the underlined wrd “reap”?
      A. Obtain. B. Exclude. C. Strengthen. D. Tlerate.
      13. Which f the fllwing is mentined in paragraph 2?
      A. The slar system releases a lt f harmful radiatin t humanity.
      B. Peple must learn mre t stp the wrst result caused by the Sun.
      C. Slar activity, if dealt with prperly, can be very beneficial t humanity.
      D. The ptential disaster can be prevented if we make accurate predictin.
      14. What is the main message cnveyed in the passage?
      A. Imprving space weather predictins is crucial fr preparedness.
      B. The Sun’s energy transprt mechanisms have been understd.
      C. The frequency f slar strms has significantly increased ver the past decade.
      D. A full-time warning system is the nly slutin t preventing slar strm impacts.
15 What will the fllwing paragraphs prbably talk abut?
      A. The sunny sides f space weather and slar activity.
      B. The drawback f the current slar predictin prjects.
      C. The ways t prtect the Earth frm ptential slar strms.
      D. The measures t imprve and redesign the Parker Slar Prbe.
      【答案】12. A 13. C 14. A 15. D
