As lng as I can remember having a phne in my hand, I’ve been a terrible replier. The sentence “Srry, I missed this.” has quickly becme a regular part f my texting vcabulary. When a new grup chat is created, my friends will certainly cme t laugh at my inability t respnd t a simple questin within hurs. Hwever, I’m nt a hrrible replier in all aspects f my life. In fact, I pride myself n my quick respnse when it cmes t wrk emails and my mum.
“Call me instead,” I tell my friends. They knw if it’s urgent (紧急的) and they need me, I’ll pick up and always be there. But if I read a message and categrize it as nn-urgent, then it’s a different stry.
When it cmes t grup chats, the cnversatins mve s rapidly that if I’m nt present fr the first five minutes f the discussin, I’ve suddenly missed 67 messages abut a party, a breakup, a cmment n the latest mvie — it’s easy t fall behind, and I d.
I want t stress that I lve my friends and I am grateful t be included in all f their grup chats. I simply find it verwhelming (令人不知所措的) t keep up with the endless messages thrughut the day. In these mments, I smetimes feel like thrwing my phne int a lake.
I recently asked my friend Tully hw she felt abut my pr texting habits. “Yu take three t five business days t respnd if we’re lucky,” she tells me. “But t be fair,” she adds, “yu always shw up when we need yu. Yu’re usually the ne driving 40 minutes acrss twn t see us. S, we can handle the grup chat silence in return fr that kind f friendship.”
At this mment, I think abut each friend’s rle in the grup — the frequent (频繁的) texter, the caller, the nn-respnder and hw we all cmmunicate and cntribute t the grup in different ways, all expressing lve in different ways.
      4. What is the authr’s typical respnse t friends’ messages?
      A. Respnding thrugh calls.B. Staying silent in grup chats.
      C. Aplgizing fr late replies.D. Aviding giving a clear answer.

Je Natuman watches fr falling leaves and new shts n trees as a sign it’s time t garden. Then, when a suthern wind begins t blw in his small village in Vanuatu’s Tafea Prvince, he is the first t plant ptates. Sn, thers will fllw his lead.
Like his ancestrs, Natuman is a tupunus, meaning he was brn int a family trained t understand hw natural frces impact agriculture and wellbeing. As a tupunus, Natuman is respected fr his knwledge and ability t use weather t help his cmmunity.
But in Vanuatu, the traditinal practice is endangered. Part f the prblem is a lss f lcal languages and the knwledge that is stred with them. Yung peple increasingly attend schl away frm their village and spend less time learning frm elders. Meanwhile, the envirnment is changing as nce easily fund plants becme harder t find due t cattle farming, frest lss and climate change.
Nw, effrts are underway t preserve that knwledge. Prfessr K. David Harrisn specialises in endangered languages. Vanuatu is hme t abut 138 languages. Sme are spken by as few as 900 peple but have richly nuanced (精确细腻的) vcabularies describing the natural and spiritual wrlds. Many f the cncepts are difficult r impssible t translate int English because equivalents (对应词) dn’t exist. Wrking with lcal cmmunities, Harrisn has created eight talking dictinaries that are used t dcument languages and recrd native envirnmental knwledge and have prved transfrmative fr speakers f the mstly unwritten languages.
Harrisn has als been studying wind knwledge in Vanuatu. It includes the use f “wind cmpasses (罗盘)”, which has been bserved and dcumented fr centuries. These are nt physical bjects but rather systems used fr naming and understanding specific winds. By using them, a tupunus will be able t sense hw the directin and strength f a wind may indicate the presence f a particular fish species r favurable crp planting cnditins. Harrisn says studying Vanuatu culture can help us understand what’s happening with the planet.
      8. What is the rle f Je Natuman in his cmmunity?
      A. Studying lcal plants.B. Predicting the weather.
      C. Guiding farming practices.D. Prmting new gardening skills.
      9. What des paragraph 3 mainly explain?
      A. Hw elders are passing dwn their wisdm.
      B. Hw climate change is influencing Vanuatu.
      C. Why yung peple are leaving their village.
      D. Why ancient knwledge in Vanuatu is disappearing.
      10. What can be learned abut Harrisn’s effrt in Vanuatu?
      A. It helps keep lcal languages alive.
      B. It helps simplify cmplex vcabularies.
      C. It invlves develping writing systems.
      D. It invlves translating lcal languages int English.
      11. Which best describes the functin f “wind cmpasses”?
      A. A family traditin.B. A directin guide.
      C. An infrmatin prvider.D. An bservatin tl.
      D
AI chatbts can mimic the style f famus pets like William Shakespeare well enugh t trick many human readers, accrding t a new paper published in Scientific Reprts. In additin, many study participants even preferred the chatbt’s petry ver the wrks f celebrated writers.
Researchers asked AI t generate pems in the style f well-knwn authrs like Walt Whitman, T.S. Elit, Emily Dickinsn, and William Shakespeare. Then, they asked 1,634 participants t read ten pems — five written by a human pet, and five written by the chatbt in the style f that same human pet — and identify which pems were fake and which were real. The results? Participants guessed crrectly arund 46 percent f the time — barely better than by chance.
In a secnd experiment, anther grup f participants rated pems n 14 qualities, ranging frm rhythm (韵律) t riginality. Sme were tld whether the pem was written by AI r a human, while thers were nt. As a result, thse wh believed they were reading human-written pems rated them higher than thse wh believed they were reading AI-created pems — regardless f what they were actually reading. But the team als uncvered a surprise: The participants wh weren’t tld abut authrship actually gave higher ratings, n average, t AI-prduced pems.
Why d readers seem t prefer AI-created petry? The researchers suggest that AI pems may be mre straightfrward t understand. Because AI-prduced pems cannt match the cmplexity f human-authred verse (韵文), they may cmmunicate themes and emtins mre clearly t nn-expert readers. Beynd the themes and emtins, AI pems were als simpler in terms f their verall frm and style.
The study’s findings seem t cnfirm many peple’s cncerns that AI culd replace human artists. Pet Drthea Lasky says it’s nt necessarily a bad thing that readers enjyed the AI-created pems. “Petry will always be necessary,” she says. “If peple favred AI pems, then that, t me, is beautiful. I feel there is rm fr all pets-even rbt pets.”
      12. What des the underlined wrd “mimic” in paragraph 1 mean?
      A. Cpy.B. Imprve.C. Criticize.D. Challenge.
      13. What was a surprising result f the secnd experiment?
      A. Participants were able t identify AI-prduced petry crrectly.
      B. Participants unaware f the authrship rated AI pems higher.
      C. Participants rated pems thught t be human-written lwer.
      D. Participants fund AI-created pems less emtinal.
      14. Why are AI pems easier t read?
      A. They include shared experiences.
      B. They feature a cnversatinal tne.
      C. They are direct in bth frm and cntent.
      D. They use pleasant rhythms and lively imagery.
      15. Hw des Drthea Lasky lk at the study’s findings?
      A. She is angry at readers preferences.
      B. She sees value in AI-created petry.
      C. She hpes fr mre variety in human petry.
      D. She believes human artists cannt be replaced.
