A mnth befre my first marathn, ne f my ankles was injured and this meant nt running fr tw weeks, leaving me nly tw weeks t train. Yet, I was determined t g ahead.
I remember back t my 7th year in schl. In my first P.E. class, the teacher required us t run laps and then hit a sftball. I didn’t d either well. He later infrmed me that I was “nt athletic”.
The idea that I was “nt athletic” stuck with me fr years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a fight against myself, nt abut cmpetitin r whether r nt I was athletic. It was all abut the fight against my wn bdy and mind. A test f wills (毅力)!
The night befre my marathn, I dreamt that I culdn’t even find the finish line. I wke up sweating and nervus, but ready t prve smething t myself.
Shrtly after crssing the start line, my she laces (鞋带) became untied. S I stpped t readjust. Nt the start I wanted!
At mile 3, I passed a sign: “GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!” By mile 17, I became ut f breath and the nce injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the curse walking a bit and then running again. By mile 21, I was starving! As I apprached mile 23, I culd see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clck sunding at 4 a.m. r questined my expenses n running.

The changes it causes can lead t besity and diabetes. Yet in a recent survey, a little mre than ne in every three U. S. adults reprted sleeping fewer than the recmmended seven hurs a night.
Weekends may seem like a great time t catch up n sleep. Scientists, hwever, weren’t sure that wuld wrk. S Christpher Diner, a sleep physilgist at the University f Clrad and his clleagues decided t test it ut.
The team lked at three grups f peple in their mid-20s. Fr rughly tw weeks, each grup fllwed a set sleep schedule. One grup slept abut eight hurs every night. Anther grup nly gt abut five hurs f shuteye a night. The third grup slept sme five hurs each weeknight, but culd sleep whenever and hwever much they wanted ver the weekend.
The grups with less sleep snacked mre at night, gained mre weight, and saw their insulin (胰岛素) sensitivity drp cmpared t the grup getting nine hurs a night, said the study. The grup that received tw days t catch up n sleep saw sme small imprvements that were lst nce they returned t a shrter sleep schedule. Peple in the study wh gt t little sleep every night gained weight. S did the weekend sleep-in crwd.
“In the end, we didn’t see any benefit in any metablic (新陈代谢的) utcme in the peple wh gt t sleep in n the weekend,” Chris Depner, an assistant research prfessr f the study said in a statement. In sme cases, insulin sensitivity amng members f the grup with the weekend t catch up declined mre than thse wh cnsistently slept five hurs a night, said the study.

“Fr years I had been ding surgery fr patients and taking care f their health prblems. Then I wuld find ut mnths later, smetimes years later, that I had caused their financial ruin,” Aguila said. Serius illnesses can cmpletely deplete a family’s savings, leaving them n chice but t g bankrupt (破产).
Then he frmed Healing Hands M25 as a way t give pr patients the medical fees they need by dnating their time t cmmunity service. The prcess is pretty simple. They practice partners with lcal charitable rganizatins. The patient picks the charity and dnates his time and sweat; Aguila determines the amunt f vlunteer hurs the patient has t cmplete. “We’ve lwered the cst f healthcare. We’ve made it fair fr everybdy invlved,” Aguila said.
The first patient t participate in the prgram was Jeffrey Jensn wh wrked fr 560 hurs t pay fr surgery n his leg. Jensn asked his friends and family t help him cmplete the hurs. Jensn said that his vlunteer wrk greatly affected his life as much as the surgery. “The M25 prgram is nt abut mney — it’s abut if peple cme tgether t help ther peple, then the cmmunity becmes better,” said Jensn.
This prgram is a big win fr the patients, the lcal cmmunity, and Dr Aguila wh knws he has dne everything he culd t help his patients.
