When Ghanaian phtjurnalist Paul Ninsn initially pursued a career in phtgraphy, he fund the challenge discuraging. Phtgraphy isn’t exactly valued as a career in Ghana, Ninsn says, “If yu tell yur parents yu’re ging t be a phtgrapher, it was like, ‘Yuck, what? G be a lawyer. ’”
But Ninsn felt phtgraphy was his calling. Deeply influenced by the family histry f
strytelling passed dwn thrugh his grandparents and later attracted by a friend’s images, he
develped a lve fr phtgraphy. He sld his mbile phne, bught a camera and began studying phtgraphy.
Thugh Ninsn began his jurney with cmmercial phtgraphy, he sn shifted his fcus t stries clser t his heart— thse f African histry and culture that he wuld capture as a
phtjurnalist.
Ninsn still sught frmal educatin in phtjurnalism. Unable t find a suitable prgram in Africa, he left Ghana in 2019 t study in New Yrk City. There, he read the center’s hundreds f phtbks. In Ghana, he nly had access t five r six f such bks.
As he ventured deeper int the city, he discvered mre visual histries f Africa than he had experienced at hme, such as dcumentatin f Ghana’s first president at the New Yrk
Public Library. The libraries Ninsn visited were unwilling t give him their archives (档案) t return t Africa, which led t his idea f creating a leading phtbk library in Africa that held such stries. This idea has been realized with the creatin f Dikan Center in Accra, Ghana’s
capital.
In Ghanaian artist Daniella Afful’s eyes, Dikan Center is the beginning f the grwth f Ghana’s creative cmmunity, “Dikan Center has magnified (放大) art and phtgraphy. Dikan Center has kind f given us the hpe that we may sn have a music library and we culd have a film library in Ghana—anything just t preserve ur histry and make histry.”
4 .What can we infer abut phtgraphy as a career in Ghana frm Paragraph 1?
A .It is highly respected and well-paid. B .It is nt cnsidered a prmising prfessin.
C .It is a ppular chice amng yung peple. D .It is supprted and encuraged by parents.
5 .Why did Paul Ninsn g t New Yrk City in 2019?

In an age where smartphnes gvern daily rutines, researchers are uncvering subtle
cgnitive trade-ffs (权衡) assciated with ver-reliance n digital tls. A 2023 Cambridge
University study tracking 1,200 participants revealed that habitual users f navigatin apps
shwed 23% weaker spatial memry cmpared t traditinal map readers. Functinal MRI(磁共振成像)scans demnstrated reduced hippcampal (海马体的) activity in GPS-dependent
individuals when recalling rutes, while traditinal navigatrs exhibited strnger neural
cnnectins in memry-related regins.
The cgnitive influence extends beynd navigatin. Language learners using apps with
autmated translatin features scred 15% lwer in spntaneus sentence cnstructin tests than textbk-based peers, accrding t a Tky University experiment. Dr. Eleanr Richards, a
cgnitive scientist at Oxfrd, explains: “Our brains adapt t technlgical shrtcuts by weakening underused neural pathways — like muscles atrphy withut exercise.”
This awareness has sparked cunter-mvements in bth educatin and crprate sectrs.
Germany’s TechSphere GmbH, a sftware develpment cmpany, implemented “Analg Fridays” in 2022, requiring emplyees t use paper ntebks and physical whitebards every Friday.
Pst-implementatin surveys shwed a 19% increase in meeting participatin and 27% reductin in self-reprted mental fatigue. “We’re nt anti-technlgy,” clarifies CEO Markus Weber, “but strategic separatin helps reclaim cgnitive bandwidth (认知带宽).” Similar plicies have been adpted by 12% f Silicn Valley startups as per 2023 industry reprts.
Educatinal refrms mirrr this shift. The University f Amsterdam nw mandates (授权) handwritten lecture ntes fr first-year students, resulting in 14% higher exam scres cmpared t laptp users. Statinery manufacturer Mleskine reprted 40% grwth in planner sales since 2021, with 35% purchased by tech prfessinals seeking screen-free prductivity methds.
Neurscientists prpse balanced slutins. Dr. Richards advcates “cgnitive zning (认知分区)”: using digital tls fr data strage while reserving analg methds fr critical thinking tasks. As AI integratin accelerates, the challenge lies nt in rejecting technlgy, but in designing hybrid systems that preserve essential human cgnitive capacities.
8 .Accrding t the Cambridge University study, what was the key difference between GPS-dependent individuals and traditinal map readers?
A .GPS users had mre active hippcampal activity when recalling rutes.
B .GPS users had strnger neural cnnectins in memry-related regins.
C .Traditinal map readers shwed better spatial memry than GPS users.
D .Traditinal map readers relied mre n technlgical shrtcuts fr navigatin.
9 .What des the underlined wrd “atrphy” in Paragraph 2 mst prbably mean?
A .T grw strnger with regular exercise. B .T becme mre flexible ver time.
C .T adapt quickly t new envirnments. D .T waste away r decline fr lack f use.
10 .What can be inferred frm the Paragraph 3 abut “strategic separatin”?
A .It is a cmplete rejectin f all digital technlgy in the wrkplace.
B .It reduces mental fatigue and imprves fcus by limiting screen time.
C .It has been widely adpted by ver half f Silicn Valley startups.
D .It has led t a significant decrease in meeting participatin rates.
11 .Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the passage?
A .Cgnitive Trade-ffs: Balancing Digital Tls and Human Capacities
B .The Decline f Spatial Memry in the Age f Smartphnes
C .Analg Fridays: A New Trend in Crprate Prductivity
D .Educatinal Refrms fr Screen-Free Learning

Acid rain, defined as rain, snw, fg r ther frms f water that cntain high levels f
certain strng acids, was first identified by Scttish chemist Rbert August Smith in 1852. This type f precipitatin (降水) typically has a pH between 4.2 and 4.4, while nrmal rain is slightly acidic with a pH f 5.6. Thugh natural surces like rtting plants and erupting vlcanes release sme acid-frming chemicals, human activities are the main driver f acid rain.
Specifically, cal-burning pwer plants, factries, and cars burn fssil fuels, which send ut harmful gases like sulfur dixide (SO2) and nitrgen xides (NOx). These gases then react with
water, xygen, and ther substances in the air t frm acids, and winds can carry these acidic cmpunds hundreds f miles acrss the surface.
Eclgically, acid rain first makes rivers, lakes, and wetlands mre acidic, which in turn
causes the sil t release aluminum. This aluminum then flws int water bdies and pisns fish and ther water-living creatures, with the harm further spreading thrugh fd chains t affect
even nn-water living animals like birds. Frests als suffer great damage: acid rain nt nly takes away necessary nutrients such as calcium frm the sil and releases aluminum, but als burns tree leaves. As a result, plants becme weak in resisting cld, insects, and diseases. Besides eclgical damage, acid rain als wears dwn stne buildings and vehicles; when it turns int breathable fg, it can cause certain health prblems.
T slve these prblems, we need t cut dwn n fssil fuels used and fllw air-quality
rules. The United Natins has been prmting glbal cperatin t reduce harmful gas emissins, and such effrts have helped sme ecsystems recver frm acid rain damage.
Hwever, recvery is slw, and difficulties in unifying glbal standards make prgress harder. As lng as fssil fuels cntinue t be used, acid rain will nt disappear — this remains a glbal
challenge that requires nging jint effrts.
12 .Accrding t the passage, what is the main cause f acid rain?
A .Natural surces frm erupting vlcanes.
B .Human activities like burning fssil fuels.
C .The reactin f water with xygen in the air.
D .The spread f acidic cmpunds by wind.
13 .Which f the fllwing is NOT mentined as a direct cnsequence f acid rain n frests?
A .Taking away essential nutrients frm the sil.B .Releasing aluminum that harms plant rts.
C .Burning tree leaves and weakening plants. D .Causing birds t lse their habitats.
14 .What can be inferred frm the passage abut the recvery f ecsystems frm acid rain damage?
A .It is a quick prcess nce harmful gas emissins stp.
B .It is fully achieved thrugh the effrts f the UN.
C .It faces challenges fr lack f unified glbal standards.
D .It is impssible as lng as fssil fuels are still in use.
15 .What is the authr’s attitude twards the issue f acid rain?
A .Indifferent B .Pessimistic C .Cncerned. D .Dubtful

items. A “discussin leader” can guide the cnversatin, ensuring everyne’s vice is heard and that the grup stays fcused n the learning bjectives.
It’s als imprtant t create a psitive and inclusive envirnment. ____ 19____ Encurage members t ask questins, even if they seem “silly,” and t share their wn insights and
explanatins. When everyne feels cmfrtable cntributing, the grup benefits frm a wider range f perspectives and deeper cllective understanding.
Finally, end each sessin with a review and a plan fr the next meeting. ____20____ This nt nly reinfrces what was learned but als helps hld each member accuntable. By fllwing these steps, grup study can becme a crnerstne f yur academic success.
