      Origins in India
Cntrary t what the name suggests, Arabic numerals trace their rts t India. The cncept f Arabic
numerals first emerged in India arund the 6th century. Indian mathematicians develped a decimal (base-10)
psitinal system, allwing fr the representatin f numbers using nly ten symbls. The inclusin f zer as a

      第 3页/共 12页
During the 8th and 9th centuries, Indian schlars and traders intrduced their numeral system t the Islamic
wrld. Arab mathematicians, like Al-Khwarizmi, recgnized the ptential f this system and began using it. His

      Islamic wrld.
      Intrductin t Eurpe
Arabic numerals reached Eurpe via Arab schlars and traders in the 10th and 11th centuries. The Italian

as a frm f self-expressin, using it t channel feelings f “strength, beauty, and femininity”. In recent years,
Celine herself has faced a battle with Stiff Persn Syndrme, a rare neurlgical disrder causing severe muscle

      walk, I’ll crawl…I wn’t stp.”
Celine Din’s influence extends far beynd music. Her philanthrpic effrts, including supprt fr children’s

A large U.S. study fund that lder adults wh drink cffee — whether caffeinated r decaffeinated — tend
t have a lwer risk f death cmpared t nn-cffee drinkers. The research, led by scientists frm the Natinal
Institutes f Health, bserved a reduced risk f death frm heart disease, strke, diabetes, infectins, and ther

causes, thugh n clear link was fund with cancer-related deaths.
The study fllwed 400,000 adults aged 50-71 ver 13 years. Participants reprted their cffee habits nce at
the start f the study. Results shwed that thse wh drank three r mre cups daily had abut a 10% lwer risk f
death than nn-drinkers. This assciatin remained even after adjusting fr factrs like smking and diet. Hwever,
researchers cautined that the findings d nt prve cffee directly extends lifespan.
“Cffee is widely cnsumed, but its health effects have been debated,” said Dr. Neal Freedman, lead authr f
the study. “While we can’t cnfirm cffee causes a lnger life, these results strngly indicate it isn’t harmful and
      might even be beneficial.”
Ntably, the type f caffeine (caffeinated vs. decaf) mattered little, implying that ther cmpunds in cffee
      — e.g. antixidants — might play a rle. Cffee cntains ver 1,000 chemicals, many f which culd influence
      health.
Of curse, the study has limitatins. Cffee intake was self-reprted nly nce, and preparatin methds were
nt analyzed. Differences in brewing might affect the health prperties f cffee. Additinally, while cffee was
linked t lwer verall death risk, men wh drank large amunts shwed a slight increase in cancer deaths, thugh
      this was nt strngly cnclusive.
Experts emphasize that lifestyle factrs matter. Cffee drinkers may have shared ther healthy habits. “This
desn’t mean everyne shuld start drinking cffee,” said Freedman. “But it ffers reassurance that mderate
      cnsumptin is likely safe.”
Published in the New England Jurnal f Medicine in 2012, this research adds t evidence that cffee, when
enjyed in mderatin, culd be a cmpnent f healthy lifestyle. Future studies will explre hw specific
cmpunds in cffee interact with the bdy.
      28. What n earth plays a crucial rle in cffee drinkers’ living lnger?
      A. The type f caffeine (regular r decaf). B. The brewing methds used in the study.
      C. Cffee drinkers’ healthier life habits. D. Antixidants and ther cmpunds in cffee.
      29. What can we learn frm the study n cffee drinking?
      A. The Study cnfirms cffee directly extends lifespan.
      B. Mre studies are still needed t cnfirm the finding.
      C. Drinking cffee reduces the risk f cancer-related deaths.
      D. The study cnducted natinwide cvered all age grups.
      30. What attitude shuld we take twards the research findings?

      A. Largely dismissive. B. Cmpletely cnvinced.
      C. Uncritically enthusiastic. D. Cautiusly ptimistic.

My husband, Brandn, has been cllecting tys since 17, beginning with a 3-inch Obi-Wan Kenbi, mre Star
Wars figures fllwing, and eventually, ur three-car garage became packed with his cllectibles.
He’s far frm alne. Research estimates that ne in three adults cllects smething, a pastime linked t
      significant cgnitive and psychlgical benefits.
I have always been struck by Brandn’s remarkably sharp memry. I wndered if his lifelng cllecting habit
actively trained his brain. Neurscientist Shirley Mueller cnfirms its pssibility. She explains building a
meaningful cllectin demands research, planning, and rganizatin, all f which stimulate the brain’s executive
functins, serving as an effective mental exercise enhancing skills like wrking memry and strategic thinking.
Beynd cgnitin, cllecting engages the brain’s pleasure center, ffering cmfrt withut negative side
effects. Functinal MRI studies reveal that acquiring a meaningful item activates the same neural pathways as jy,
fueled by anticipatin. Psychlgically, the hbby allws individuals t set tangible and achievable gals,
prmting a strng sense f cmpetence, prgress, and persnal cntrl. This rewarding sense f agency likely
explains why many turned t cllecting fr cmfrt and stability during perids f uncertainty — a key reasn
why the hbby saw a visible increase in ppularity during the pandemic, even amng newcmers.
Additinally, cllecting ften invlves psitive nstalgia (怀旧). Revisiting cherished memries and items can
activate the bdy’s relaxatin respnse, reducing stress and prmting calm. “It’s a way fr the cllectr t
temprarily let g f burdens and find jy,” says Mueller. This als agrees with the “pleasure principle.”
Furthermre, cllecting fulfills fundamental humans’ scial needs. The cmmunity it creates satisfies the need
fr cnnectin and relatedness. Engaging with fellw enthusiasts builds scial bnds and supprt, which are crucial
      fr emtinal well-being.
Fr Brandn, his cllectin is nt merely cnnected t the past. It is a living and evlving prject that
cntinuusly sharpens his mind, ffers cmfrt t his spirit, and cnnects him t a stry much larger than himself.
It is a persnal legacy built n jy, learning, and cnnectin.
      第 7页/共 12页
      32. Why did cllecting becme mre ppular during the pandemic?
      A. Peple had much mre time at hme. B. The psitive nstalgia peple had fr ld items.
      C. The value f cllectibles increased. D. It prvided a sense f cntrl and cmfrt.
      33. What des Paragraph 6 mainly fcus n?
      A. The fulfillment f fundamental human needs. B. The scial benefits frm the cllectin circles.
      C. The cgnitive imprvement thrugh cllectin. D. The great imprtance f emtinal well-being.
      34. What can we infer abut Brandn’s cllectin frm the text?
A It is primarily intended fr investment. B. It csts him t much time and mney.
      C. It serves as a cnnectr with his children. D. It is a persnal meaningful lifelng prject.
      35. What is the writer’s main purpse f writing the article?
      A. T discuss the ecnmic trends in the cllectibles market.
      B. T advcate taking up cllecting as a beneficial hbby.
      C. T explain the varius science-backed benefits f cllecting.
      D. T share a tuching persnal stry abut her husband’s cllectin.
