Brn in 1831 in Christiana, Delaware, Crumpler spent her childhd in Pennsylvania with an aunt, wh frequently cared fr sick neighbrs, and Crumpler went with her n these trips. In her bk published in 1883, Crumpler wrte, “Having been raised by a kind aunt, whse usefulness t the sick was cntinually sught, I early develped a liking fr medicine, and sught every pprtunity t be in a psitin t relieve the sufferings f thers.”
In 1852, Crumpler mved t Charlestwn, Massachusetts, t begin her medical career as a nurse. In the early 1850s, there was n frmal schl where ne culd becme licensed t practice nursing. Even s, Crumpler assisted several dctrs in Bstn fr eight years. They in turn supprted her applicatin t the New England Female Medical Cllege, where she was awarded a state- funded schlarship.
Crumpler wrked hard at her studies but had t take a leave f absence after tw years t attend t her sick husband, wh unfrtunately passed away in 1863. Mnths later, Crumpler returned t cmplete her final term but was nearly refused after sme faculty members (教员) expressed wrry regarding the amunt f time it was taking her t cmplete her cursewrk and were hesitant t let her cme back. Luckily, with several f the schl’s spnsrs supprting her, Crumpler finally received a “Dctress f Medicine” frm cllege, and began seeing patients in and arund her huse, treating them regardless f their ability t pay.
In 1883, Dr. Crumpler published a bk based n jurnal ntes she kept during her years f practice. A Bk f Medical Discurses, specifically aimed at wmen and the care f their children, is believed t be the first medical text written by an African American authr. Training was cruel, as Penny Lee Dean prepared fr what wuld be a recrd-setting swim — regardless f sex — acrss the English Channel in 1978. “Yur hands cramp (痉挛), yur legs cramp,” she remembers.
While the cld was bne-chilling, vercming it has been essential t her success as a recrd-breaking swimmer. An ability t tlerate extreme cld is ne f the advantages that wmen may have in this sprt, as their distributin f fat is helpful fr regulating bdy temperature in cld water.
Dean believes that any upper hand wmen might have in pen-water swimming ver lng distances is mre abut mental adaptatin and the ability t bear discmfrt than abut insulatin (阻隔). In ultradistance events, the ability t handle mre factrs, frm weather t pain, becmes particularly imprtant.
In fact, wmen can utperfrm r perfrm similarly t men in a range f cmpetitive events. Frm ultrarunning t shting sprts, in sme cmpetitins wmen have the edge. Cassi Rippel, the ISSF Athletes Cmmittee Chair, says that while men’s muscles tend t give them mre staying pwer, wmen’s lwer bdy mass and lwer centre f gravity, n average, allw them better balance cntrl. The rifle (步枪) events are the mst sex-balanced f the three types f shting events in the Olympics, accrding t Rippel.
The nearly century-lng histry f the Olympics is als a histry f the grwth f female empwerment. An increasing number f female athletes have brken gender barriers, achieving remarkable success in traditinally male-dminated sprts. The Paris Olympics are the first Olympics t have equal numbers f female and male athletes. This is als an pprtunity t think carefully abut what gap s in inclusin still remain.
While much f the science f sex and perfrmance may be unsettled, ne thing that’s very clear is that mre research needs t invlve wmen. The path tward greater inclusin has nt been straight, and mre questins than answers remain abut the rle f sex in athletic perfrmance.
      28. What challenge did Dean face when breaking the recrd?
      A. The lng distance.B. The lw temperature.
      C. The extra bdy fat.D. The intense training.
      29. What advantage may wmen have in lng and pen-water swimming?
      A. Strng awareness abut keeping warm.
      B. Superir flexibility t tugh situatins.
      C. Inbrn talent fr lng distance swimming.
      D. Abslute cncentratin n swimming path.
      30. What des the underlined phrase “have the edge” in paragraph 4 mean?
      A. Appear weaker.B. Seem cnservative.
      C. Take the lead.D. Shw less pressure.
      31. What des the text mainly talk abut?
      A. Wmen’s ptential in sprts.B. Sprts suitable fr wmen.
      C. Views n gender and sprts.D. Females in the Olympics.

(社会热点)King Shahryar, betrayed (背叛) by his wife, decides t marry a new wman each night and have her killed by mrning t ensure he is never betrayed again. Scheherazade vlunteers t marry the king. Each evening, she begins an engaging stry but stps at dawn, leaving him eager fr mre. Applying these tw skills t their wn lives, skillful strytellers use the first t identify and pursue what gives their life meaning, while the secnd develps a mindset that priritizes the “why” behind their actins ver just the “hw”.
T illustrate this pint, we cnducted studies with 800 participants. We measured strytelling ability thrugh self-reprts, friend evaluatins and expert reviews n lab experiments where each participant tld ne stry abut himself and the ther with three given randm wrds. In additin t these assessments f strytelling skills, we asked participants questins t get a sense f hw meaningful they fund life and whether they apprached decisins with a “why” mindset rather than a “hw” mindset.
Results cnsistently linked strytelling skills t strnger life meaning and gal clarity. Persnality als mattered: peple pen t new experiences cllected mre interesting life stries, while shy peple used strytelling t balance ut their limited scial interactin.
A strng “why” mindset cnnects with reduced stress and extended life. Strytelling als builds scial cnnectins. By helping peple express their purpse and build relatinships, stries may indirectly strengthen bth mental and physical health.

      D. T cmpare ancient and mdern stries.
      33. What des the “why” mindset primarily fcus n?
      A. Cmpleting daily tasks efficiently.B. Aviding stressful situatins.
      C. Memrizing randm life events.D. Understanding life’s purpse.
      34. What were participants asked t d in the lab experiment?
      A. Share persnal interests in a grup.
      B. Tell a stry with wrds prvided.
      C. Reflect n the “why” behind their actins.
      D. Cnnect events int a meaningful stry.
      35. Which can be the best title fr the text?

      B. Hw Peple’s Strytelling Abilities Develp
      C. Living a Meaningful Life thrugh Strytelling

In the early mnths f my junir year at Valley Frge High Schl, I decided t vlunteer at the lcal animal shelter. Upn my first visit t the shelter, I was immediately struck by the number f animals in need and the bvius sense f urgency amng the staff and vlunteers. Dgs barked eagerly frm their cages, while cats paced restlessly. The shelter manager, Mrs Clark, a veteran in animal rescue, guided me thrugh the rientatin prcess. She detailed the daily tasks which included feeding the animals, cleaning their living spaces, and, mst imprtantly, spending time scializing with them. It was clear frm the beginning that this wrk wuld demand mre than just my time; it required cmpassin and dedicatin.
As weeks turned int mnths, my cnnectin with the animals deepened. I learned t recgnize their unique persnalities and needs. Sme were shy and withdrawn, needing much mre time t engage, while thers were excited and playful frm the start. The mre time I spent at the shelter, the mre I realized hw each interactin with an animal was a chance t prvide them with a sense f security and lve — a small cmfrt in their uncertain wrld.
The respnsibilities I held at the shelter als grew with time. Mrs Clark trusted me with mre cmplex tasks such as administering medicatin and assisting in the adptin prcess. This trust nt nly bsted my cnfidence but als shwed the imprtance f my rle in these animals’ lives. The gratitude I saw in bth the animals’ and adpters’ eyes was rewarding.
