      Fr the study, the researchers selected 111 cllege students between the ages f 17 and 30 wh liked t use scial media. Besides, the study fcused n the use f shrt-frm vide apps rather than general smartphne use. Researchers cllected their brain imaging data using MRI scans (磁共振扫描) t see the neurlgical effects f shrt-frm vides, especially in terms f structural changes and functinal activity in the brain.
      The results were surprising. Participants wh were mre addicted t shrt-frm vides shwed functinal and structural brain differences cmpared with thers. There was an increase in gray matter vlume (灰质体积) in the cerebellum (小脑) and rbitfrntal crtex (眶额叶皮层) , which are imprtant t decisin-making, infrmatin prcessing, and emtinal cntrl. This makes the brain mre sensitive t the quick rewards that ne gets frm watching ne vide after anther, making it harder t stp.
      Mrever, the researchers fund nearly 500 genes linked t changes in the brain resulting frm shrt-frm vide addictin. Interestingly, mst f these genes are highly active during the teenage years, suggesting that these years are a vulnerable perid during which individuals may be mre likely t get addicted t shrt-frm vides.
