Beavers Reduce River Flding and Pllutin
Researchers have discvered that beavers(海狸) have a psitive effect n the envirnment. Accrding t a new study, their activity helps t reduce flding and pllutin, and can bst(增加) ppulatins f fish and ther wildlife.
A team f scientists led by Prfessr Richard Brazier frm the University f Exeter studied wild Eurasian(欧亚的) beavers living n the River Otter, in Devn, fr five years. Beavers build dams in rivers ut f branches. These dams create pls f calm water where they can build their hmes, which are called ldges. They burrw(挖洞) int river banks r use existing hles, with entrances hidden just underwater where they are safe frm predatrs(捕食者).
The researchers fund that dams clean the river water because sil and pllutin such as manure(肥料) and fertilizer running ff land nearby gets trapped and held by the tangled(纠缠的) branches. As a result, there were 37% mre fish in pnds created by the dams than in areas withut beavers.
The dams als slw the speed at which fld water flws dwnriver after heavy rain, reducing the risk f flding t farmland and vulnerable villages. In places, the slwer water spreads ut acrss nearby unfarmed land, creating new wetlands that are a valuable wildlife habitat. A few small areas f farmland have als been flded, but the reprt says this prblem can be slved by remving parts f dams, perhaps, r running pipes thrugh them t allw water t flw mre freely.
Beavers were nce hunted fr their fur, and were wiped ut in England in the 16th century. They appeared n the River Otter in 2008, but n ne knws hw they gt there. In 2014, the gvernment planned t remve the beavers, but Devn Wildlife Trust persuaded fficials t change their minds.
      29. Accrding t the first tw paragraphs what d beavers use t build dams in rivers?
      A. Stnes and mudB. Trees branches
      C. Manure and fertilizerD. Existing hles in river banks

      B. By trapping sil and pllutin with tangled branches.
      C. By creating new wetlands fr wildlife.
      D. By increasing the number f fish in the river.
