Music is widely knwn as a painkiller. But scientists still struggle t figure ut what gives music this effect. In frmer studies, musical temp (节奏) , musical energy and hw relaxing the music is dn’t impact pain relief. In a new study, researchers argue that the relief culd cme frm letting peple pick sngs t listen t.
The team designed an nline experiment where participants either listened t music with lw r high cmplexity (复杂性) . They gave sme participants a chance t chse their sng. They needed t listen t fur musical clips (片段) that lasted tw secnds and chse ne t listen t in full. Hwever, all the clips came frm the same sng, s they all actually listened t the same sng. The researchers had asked a musician t write tw pieces that shared the same sng but differed in cmplexity.
Befre the test, participants rated their well-being, pain intensity and pain unpleasantness. Then, they listened t the entire sng — either the cmplex r simple versin. Afterwards, they re-rated their pain and well-being, reprted hw they felt abut the sng and described hw deeply they were invlved in music in their everyday lives.

Having lst his eyesight in childhd, cuntless difficulties nce std in Ang Ziyu’s path as he experienced an academic life. He uses a stick mre t remind peple that he is blind, in case he kncks int thers, rather than needing it t walk,” said Bai Lu, his teacher.
Greater challenges came frm educatin activities. As an infrmatin and cmputing science majr, Ang needs t take many math curses that cntain symbls and gemetry, which are difficult t express in Braille.
