Watering and fertilizing (施肥) crps t prvide enugh fd fr a changing wrld is a majr challenge in agriculture. Nw, scientists at the University f Texas at Austin have develped a “smart sil” that can keep plants cntaining enugh water and prvide them with cntrlled nutrients. In tests, it greatly imprved crp grwth while using far less water.
It’s been estimated that arund 70% f the wrld’s freshwater usage ges twards agriculture. That f curse means that in areas where water is scarce, it can be hard t grw crps and feed ppulatins, s scientists are investigating ways t bst efficiency.
Building n earlier wrk, the new study marks a gd step in that directin. The sil gets “smart” thanks t the additin f a special substance called hydrgel, which wrks t take in mre water frm the air vernight, and then let it cme t the plants’ rts during the day. Adding CaCl2 int the hydrgel als prvides a slw release f this vital nutrient.
The team tested the new “smart sil” in lab experiments, grwing plants in 10 grams f sil, with sme including 0.1g f hydrgel. A day/night cycle was created, with 12 hurs f darkness at 25℃ and either 60% r 90% relative humidity (湿度) , fllwed by 12 hurs f sunlight at 35℃ and 30% humidity.
Sure enugh, plants grwing in the hydrgel sil shwed a 138% bst t their stem (茎) length, cmpared t the cntrl grup. Imprtantly, the hydrgel-grwn plants achieved this even while requiring 40% less direct watering.
“The glbal water shrtage cupled with a grwing ppulatin has an immediate impact n fd security,” said Guihua Yu, authr f the study. “This new class f hydrgels ffers a prmising slutin t meet the pressing needs f water scarcity and efficient nutrient uptake in mdern sustainable agriculture.”

Eastern hellbenders, a type f freshwater salamander (火蜥蜴) fund nly in Nrth America, are active at night. In late June, Adams and a team f scientists sptted sme hellbenders in the Watauga River in Nrth Carlina (NC). They caught, labelled and relcated these hellbenders t a different part f the Watauga River while US Fish and Wildlife bilgists and engineers carefully decnstructed Shul’s Mill Dam, an abandned dam. The prject, led by nn-prfits American Rivers and MuntainTrue, is a cmmn effrt t imprve the river’s water quality while creating a better habitat fr eastern hellbenders, whse ppulatins have decreased by an estimated 70 percent since the 1980s.
The rivers acrss suthern Appalachia naturally flw fast, but as humans develped the area in the 1800s, dams were put in place t create reservirs and pwer industries. In turn, water flw decreased, urban pllutin increased, and sand, stnes and mud blcked the cracks where hellbenders live and feed. Hellbenders are highly sensitive t pllutin because they breathe thrugh the flds f their skin, which means pllutants mre easily enter their bdies.
Ward’s Mill Dam was the first remved dam n the Watauga River in 2021. Eastern hellbenders hadn’t been dcumented near that dam in ver 100 years, but they returned nce it was remved. Althugh remving the dams is a messy prcess, the prject leaders say the lng-term benefits far utweigh the temprary disturbance.
Dam remvals aren’t just happening n the Watauga River. An estimated 540,000 dams exist acrss the cuntry, accrding t the Sutheast Aquatic Resurces Partnership, with abut 28,000 in NC alne. The $700,000-prject in NC was partly funded thrugh a larger $800 millin-allcatin (拨款) fr dam remvals natinwide frm the federal 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
