Crws are famus fr being smart, with cgnitive (认知的) abilities similar t thse f 5- t 7-year-ld children. Previus studies have shwn that they can cunt up t fur, and tell human vices and faces apart. Sme kinds can even make tls fr future use. A new study gives us mre surprises, finding that crws can recgnise basic gemetric (几何的) features, such as side lengths, parallel lines and right angles. They can als tell different shapes apart, like stars, crescents, squares and irregular fur-sided figures.
T test crws’ gemetric skills, scientists shwed tw crws six shapes n a digital screen. They trained the crws t pick the utlier — the shape that was different frm the thers. When the crws chse crrectly, they gt delicius snacks as rewards. At first, the utlier was easy t find, such as ne flwer amng five crescents. As the crws gt used t the task, the shapes became mre similar, including squares and irregular fur-sided figures. Even with harder tasks, the crws still fund the utlier crrectly.
Crws’ shape recgnitin ability is still an interesting tpic fr researchers. They think this ability may help crws find their way when flying. It may als help them lk fr fd r recgnise ther crws — including pssible mates — by their facial features. Andreas Nieder, a neurphysilgist frm the University f Tübingen in Germany and the senir authr f the study, said, “Frm a bilgical pint f view, all these abilities have develped because they help crws survive better and reprduce mre easily.”
In the future, researchers hpe t find which part f crws’ brains cntrls their great gemetric ability. Birds dn’t have a cerebral crtex (大脑皮层) — at least, nt like humans d. Fr humans, this part f the brain is in charge f thinking and ther cmplex functins. But crws still have such abilities, s researchers believe there must be ther special things in their brains. Nieder said, “Clearly, evlutin has fund tw different ways t create animals that can behave flexibly.”
      8. What can crws d accrding t the new study?
      A. Make tls fr future use.B. Tell basic gemetric shapes apart.
      C. Recgnise different clrs.D. Cunt numbers larger than fur easily.
      9. Which f the fllwing is the main idea f Paragraph 2?
      A. The purpse f the test.B. The reasns fr the test.
      C. The preparatins fr the test.D. The prcess f the test.
      10. What is Nieder’s attitude twards crws’ cgnitive abilities?
      A. Psitive.B. Dubtful.C. Unclear.D. Negative.
      11. What will researchers prbably study next abut crws?
      A. The cerebral crtex f humans and crws.
      B. Other cmplex functins f crws’ brains.
      C. The main causes f crws’ flexible behavirs.
      D. The brain areas f crws related t gemetric skills.

Imagine a wrld where salty seawater culd be used t grw fresh herbs, and fish waste culd becme “fd” fr plants? Scientists have created an amazing system that cmbines slar energy, seawater desalinatin (脱盐), fish farming and vegetable grwing. This system helps slve water shrtages and prduces fd efficiently.
Why is this system needed? The wrld’s ppulatin is grwing quickly and may reach 9.6 billin by 2050. Mre peple need mre fd and water, but fresh water and farmland are becming less and less. In dry areas like the Middle East, fresh water is s limited that farming is difficult. Besides, water, energy and fd are clsely cnnected. Slving ne prblem alne ften desn’t wrk. That’s why scientists develped this linked system.
Hw des the system perate? The system wrks like a circular prductin line. First, slar panels prvide pwer fr a special filter called a “reverse smsis membrane” t remve salt frm seawater, prducing fresh water. Then, part f this fresh water ges t a fishpnd cntaining tilapia, a type f fish that grws quickly. Next, the fish waste naturally turns the water int nutrient-rich “fertilizer (化肥) water”. Finally, this fertilized water is used t irrigate sweet basil, a useful plant fr cking and medicine.
What were the results? In their experiment, scientists cmpared watering basil, with fish waste water, chemical fertilizer, and a cmbinatin f bth. After six mnths, the tilapia had a 97.7% survival rate, and each fish weighed abut 0.458 kg. Basil plants watered with fish waste water grew the best — up t 62 cm tall, with 17.7 branches per plant. The yield reached 14.7 tns per hectare. With extra leaf fertilizatin, 1 cubic meter f fish waste water culd prduce 5 kg f basil. The essential il frm the basil was als high in quality.
This system saves fresh water, reduces pllutin, uses clean energy, and prduces bth fish and herbs. It is especially suitable fr dry areas. Perhaps ne day, such systems will becme cmmn, making every drp f water and every bit f energy cunt.
      12. What can we infer abut the new system in the Middle East?
      A. It will take the place f all traditinal farms there sn.
      B. It will becme the nly way fr peple there t get fd.
      C. It can turn all the seawater in the regin int fresh water.
      D. It may help lcals grw mre fd with limited fresh water.
      13. Accrding t Paragraph 3, hw is fish waste used in the system?
      A. It is remved by a special filter.B. It is turned int fd fr the fish.
      C. It becmes fertilizer fr the plants.D. It is mixed with chemical fertilizer.
      14. Which methd prduced the best grwth f basil in the experiment?
      A. Using nly chemical fertilizer water.B. Using nly fish waste water fr watering.
      C. Watering directly with riginal seawater.D. Mixing waste water with chemical fertilizer.
      15. What is the authr’s purpse in writing the passage?
      A. T cmpare different methds f watering basil plants.
      B. T prve that slar energy is the mst effective energy surce.
      C. T intrduce a new system that cmbines multiple technlgies.
      D. T warn peple f the serius glbal fd and water shrtage.
