Suddenly, I felt a desire t recreate thse flavrs, nt just fr sustenance, but t feel clser t my grandmther.
My first attempt at braised prk ribs was a disaster. I added t much sy sauce, burned the sugar, and the meat was tugh and chewy. I felt discuraged, but I didn’t give up. I re-read the recipe carefully, watched several cking tutrials nline, and adjusted my methd. The secnd try was better, but still nt perfect. By the third attempt, the ribs were tender, flavrful, and full f the familiar taste I remembered.
As I cntinued cking, I discvered smething surprising: I enjyed it. It was a creative prcess that allwed me t experiment and express myself. Cking als became a way t relieve stress after a lng day f studying. I learned t be patient, as gd dishes take time t prepare. I als learned respnsibility, as I had t plan my meals and manage my ingredients prperly. Nw, I ften invite friends ver fr dinner, and nthing makes me happier than seeing them enjy the fd I’ve cked.

Pstmates, an American delivery cmpany, has built a rbt, called Serve, which was designed t make shrt-distance deliveries in cities.
T knw what’s ging n, Serve has a laser radar (激光雷达)sensr n tp, in which spinning lasers let it detect bjects arund it and knw hw far away they are. Als, behind each artificial eye is a camera, with six mre imaging devices spread arund the rbt. Inside it is anther sensr that allws Pstmates t knw if there is a package in there.
“One f ur key decisins early n was t rely heavily n the rbt’s ability t see the envirnment,” says Ali Kashani, the vice president fr rbtics at Pstmates. Since the sidewalk is “a very chatic envirnment”, he pints ut, the rbt needs t be able t take it all in and figure ut what t d. This rbt, and many like it, als must be able t signal their intentins t the pedestrians (行人). Fr that, it has a number f appraches. One is using its eyes; anther is a clurful light ring that ges arund the tp. “When it wants t make way fr a pedestrian, it will use its eyes and lk dwn,” he explains. It can als use the lights n the tp as a turn signal, which is bvius, and als lk left and right when it’s turning left and right.
“Using eye mvements and ther silent signals is a gd idea,” says Aarn Steinfeld, a prfessr f human-rbt interactin. Serve is intended fr sidewalks and Steinfeld says that envirnment is challenging. Peple usually walk fast while staring at a smartphne. Fr a rbt, that’s a lt. “We have active research n rbt mving scially arund walking peple,” he says. “And it’s really tricky t d this well.”
Pstmates plans t use Serve in Ls Angeles at first, and that its intended task is t mve small bjects ver shrt distances. The rbt can travel 30 miles n ne charge and is able t carry 50 punds.
8. What is the functin f Serve’s laser radar?
A. T detect surrunding bjects and their distances.
B. T take phts f bjects in the city.
C. T check if there is a package inside.
D. T help find shrt-distance delivery places.
9. Hw des Serve signal t pedestrians?
A. By using its legs.B. By making lud sunds.
C. By eye mvements.D. By playing music.
10. What des Aarn Steinfeld think f making rbt mving scially arund pedestrians?
A. Amusing.B. Impractical.C. Bring.D. Difficult.
11. What is the best title fr the text?
A. Serve: City Lng-Distance Rbt.
B. Pstmates’ Rbt Serve fr Delivery.
C. Hw Des Rbt Serve Wrk?
D. Pstmates’ New Delivery Tl.

The debate has lasted fr mre than a century: des birth rder shape persnality, r are ideas abut respnsible firstbrns and creative yungest children weak steretypes? Althugh several previus studies suggested there was little evidence fr meaningful differences, a study published n Mnday argues that there is an effect after all.
In ne f the largest studies ever cnducted n birth rder, family size and persnality, Canadian researchers gathered data frm mre than 700,000 vlunteers and fund that n average, middle children scred higher than their siblings n traits seen as imprtant fr cperatin. Scres fr the same traits were als higher in families with mre children, suggesting that peple may be mre likely t develp a cperative persnality when they are raised as part f a bigger grup.
Althugh the effects were nt large, the researchers believe the findings challenge earlier cnclusins. “The weight f that evidence nw indicates that persnality trait levels d differ as a functin f birth rder and sibship size,” wrte Michael Ashtn and Kibm Lee in Prceedings f the Natinal Academy f Sciences.
Interest in birth rder ges back a lng way, In 1874, Francis Galtn examined English scientists and argued that firstbrns benefited frm greater parental attentin. Later, psychlgist Alfred Adler suggested that firstbrns tended t be cnscientius, yungest children creative, and middle children peacemakers, thugh sme viewed them as “frgtten children.”
Earlier research fund firstbrns t be slightly smarter than later-brn children, a pattern als bserved in the Canadian study. Beynd intelligence, the researchers identified differences in cperative traits. Peple with mre siblings scred higher n agreeableness and hnesty-humility, with middle children shwing a small additinal advantage.
The findings suggest that if an nly child and a persn frm a family f six were chsen at randm, there was a 60% chance that the mre agreeable wuld be frm the family f six. “Yu can’t tell much abut the persnality f a given individual frm their birth rder r family size, even thugh there are clear differences when averaging acrss many peple. Anyway, having mre siblings fsters a mre cperative persnality, while being a middle child calls fr gd bnds with yunger and lder siblings,” Lee said.
12. What can we learn frm the study results?
A. Only middle children develp cperative traits.
B. Birth rder shapes persnality mre than family size.
C. Family size may cntribute t cperative persnality.
D. Middle children have better academic perfrmances.
13. Why des the authr mentin Galtn and Adler in Para 4?
A. T explain hw t be mre cperative.
B. T trace the histrical interest in birth rder.
C. T describe Canadian psychlgists’ methds.
D. T emphasize the neglect f middle children tday.
14. What d Lee’s wrds in the last paragraph suggest?
A. Statistical differences are practically meaningless.
B. Birth rder and family size have n effect n persnality.
C. Children frm big families are bund t be mre agreeable.
D. Birth rder alne cannt determine an individual’s persnality.
15. What is the text mst prbably taken frm?
A. A science article.B. A psychlgy textbk.
C. A persnal bigraphy.D. A research prpsal.
