In the first week f summer 2019, I decided I wanted a jb. Thugh having n previus wrk experience, I was surprisingly ffered a jb interview at the lcal fast fd restaurant.
The interview went well. But, befre I left, the manager asked me t serve a custmer. “Just give her the items shwn next t her rder number n that screen,” he said, pinting t a mnitr n the wall behind him.
T my hrrr, I culdn’t make ut a single wrd n the display. The custmer std impatiently as I frze. After a few awkward minutes, the manager dismissed me and I received a rejectin email the next mrning. Fr the first time in my life, I realized that I was disabled.
I knew I had been brn partially sighted. As a child, I remember struggling t see the whitebard in class, even when I was sitting right at the frnt. I masked this by cpying ntes frm my friends, face bent clse t the paper. As I gt lder and mre self-cnscius, I buried the secret even mre.
But when I gt back frm that jb interview, I made the first step twards living a life with a disability: acceptance. It was slw, painful prgress. I learned that glasses culdn’t imprve my visin and that I wuld never be allwed t drive.
Fr the first time, I lked at the fficial diagnsis (诊断) I had received at 12 years ld: retinal dystrphy — a grup f inherited (遗传的) eye disrders. Seeing the wrds in cld print made smething that had seemed s abstract and cnfusing a reality. T my surprise, I was filled with relief.
The next step was unlearning the extreme independence I had develped ver the years. I hated asking fr help — s much that I wuld say I wasn’t hungry at restaurants because I was t self-cnscius t lk clsely at the menu. But as I started reaching ut fr help, the lve and supprt f my friends and even strangers warmed my heart. They built up my cnfidence t ask fr help.
Tday, I feel very far frm the anxiety-ridden girl frm that interview. I knw that I cannt change my visin, but I treat every new barrier as a challenge. And, these days, I make sure I never g hungry in restaurants.
      24. The manager rejected the authr because she ______.
      A. failed t read the rder B. was t nervus t wrk
      C. refused t serve the custmerD. had n relevant wrk experience
      25. Hw did the authr deal with her disability as a child?
      A. By taking n challenges. B. By cvering up the truth.
      C. By building her cnfidence.D. By cpying thers’ behavirs.
      26. Hw did the interview change the authr?
      A. She hid her secret mre deeply. B. She became mre anxiety-ridden.
      C. She sught assistance mre willingly.D. She managed t be mre independent.
      27. What can we learn frm the passage?

      C. Knw me fr my abilities, nt my disability.
      D. The mre yu rely n yurself, the strnger yu becme.

When the heat sets in, the siren (汽笛) sng f the ice cream truck fills the air, and lemnade stands appear alng sidewalks. These sweet treats are ften synnymus (同义的) with summer, and a new study has fund that sugar cnsumptin in the U.S. rises nticeably as temperatures climb. The magnitude f such impact is particularly apparent amng certain grups f peple and raises cncerns ver the health implicatins as the climate cntinues t heat up.
Much f the research n glbal warming and fd has fcused n hw climate affects the nutritinal cntent f fd r hw fd cnsumptin cntributes t greenhuse gas emissins. Pan He, an envirnmental scientist, hit n the idea t lk at the relatinship: hw rising temperatures affect fd cnsumptin. Her team fcused n sugar due t its links t diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
The researchers paired temperature data with U.S. husehld grcery purchases. They fund little difference in cnsumptin belw 12℃. But between that temperature and 30℃, cnsumptin increased by 0.7g/℃. There was a slwdwn abve 30℃, which the authrs prpse culd be related t extreme heat suppressing (抑制) appetite.
Mst f the verall increase came frm sugary drinks like sdas. Frzen desserts such as ice cream made a smaller cntributin. There was a slight decrease in the cnsumptin f sugary fds such as cakes r ckies, suggesting peple may be replacing ther ptins with iced treats. The increase is cncerning because the average recmmended daily sugar intake fr a 2,400-calrie diet is abut 60g—and a single can f sda can have arund 40g.
Cnsumptin patterns varied, thugh. Men cnsumed mre sugary drinks than wmen. Als, the amunt f added sugar cnsumed during ht weather was several times higher fr lw-incme families than fr wealthy nes. Lwer-incme husehlds are less likely t have access t air cnditining, making them mre reliant n sugary drinks t cl dwn. Outdr wrkers and less-educated families als shwed higher sugar cnsumptin. There were additinal differences, with White Americans having the highest added sugar effect, while Asian Americans shwed n significant change. This suggests climate change may widen existing nutritinal inequalities and unintentinally wrsen diet-related health risks.
The researchers prjected that, withut interventin, sugar cnsumptin in the U.S. wuld keep rising with warming. Slutins culd include nutritinal educatin, clearer sugar labeling and an added sugar tax. Other measures — like ensuring accessible drinking water and breaks at utdr wrkplaces — culd cut sugary drink cnsumptin and reduce heat-related illness risks.
Alice Lichtenstein, a nutritin scientist nt invlved in the study, urges mre research int hw the accessibility and pricing f sugary drinks cmpare with thse f water fr disadvantaged grups. “We need t better understand the behaviral frces behind negative health decisins like increased sugary drink cnsumptin in ht weather,” she says, “and use this t design strategies t lessen these behavirs.”
      28. What des the underlined wrd “magnitude” in Paragraph 1 prbably mean?
      A. Nature.B. Origin.C. Duratin.D. Extent.
      29. What can we learn frm Pan He’s research?
      A. Warming leads t higher intake f different sugary fds.
      B. Heat affects sugar intake differently amng grups f peple.
      C. Interventin in nutritinal educatin has been widely emplyed.
      D. Fd cnsumptin increases cnsistently with the rise f temperature.
      30. Which wuld be the best title fr this passage?
      A. The Cncerning Trend: Giving in t Our Sweet Tth.
      B. The Burning Truth: Heat Is Reshaping Our Diets.
      C. Sweet Appeal: Climate’s Hidden Health Effect.
      D. Climate’s Bite: Insufficient Sugar Intake.

The science f ur age is cmputatinal. Withut mdels, simulatins (模拟), statistical analysis, data strage and s n, ur knwledge f the wrld wuld grw far mre slwly. The late philspher Paul Humphreys called this the “hybrid scenari” f science, where parts f the scientific prcess are assigned t cmputers. He als identified an “autmated scenari”, where cmputers take ver science cmpletely.
If such a scenari ever arrives, we wuld see a strange wrld indeed — the cmputatinal capacities fr scientific reasning, data prcessing, mdel-making and therizing wuld far surpass ur wn abilities t the pint that we humans are n lnger needed. AI r artificial superintelligences may decide t explre scientific interests that human scientists are unmtivated t pursue, creating whle new paths f discvery. They might even gain knwledge abut the wrld that lies beynd what ur brains are capable f understanding.
If the results f the cmpletely autmated scenari are beynd ur cmprehensin, then why wuld we want t devte ecnmic resurces and intellectual talent twards its develpment? One reasn may be that we think psitive advancements will fllw. A different reasn wuld be aesthetic (美学的). There is smething aesthetically pleasing in knwing that the wrld is being knwn, studied and understd. Alternatively, humanity might pursue the autmated scenari ut f beneficence: We think it wuld be gd fr the artificial superintelligences t pursue their wn advanced science.
Equally as many are thse reasns why we might decide nt t pursue the autmated scenari. Perhaps, the discveries the artificial superintelligence makes wuld generate new and terrible weapns. Perhaps, it’s simply the cncern that sme f the superintelligences will begin t experiment in ways that are dangerus, immral r cntrary t humanity’s shared values.
S, what will we d? In Humphreys’s riginal presentatin f the autmated scenari, he suggested that the autmated scenari wuld replace human science. Brader cnsideratins pint elsewhere. Our desires fr understanding, explanatin, knwledge and cntrl will remain, and we cannt help but take actin t address thse desires — t cntinue t d science. We humans create beautiful things, pursue interhuman cnnectin in friendship and rmance, and find and cnstruct meaning in life. The same hlds true fr ur mtivatins fr science. We will be stuck with ur curisity t understand and explain the natural wrld arund us.
If the autmated scenari cmes t pass, it seems that it will have t be as sme new, alternative, secndary path — nt a replacement, but an additin. Tw species, pursuing science side by side, with different mtivatins, interests, framewrks and theries. Indeed, if we are t remain human, we must cntinue t pursue science. What are we, really, if we are nt beauty-seeking, friendship-making, meaning-cnstructing, hpelessly curius animals?
      31. What is the key difference between the hybrid and autmated scenaris?
      A. The pace f scientific discvery.
      B. The level f cmputing efficiency.
      C. The range f machine dminatin.
      D. The depth f human understanding.
      32. As fr Humphreys’s argument in Paragraph 5, the authr is ______.
      A. appreciativeB. uncertain C. submissive D. unfavrable
      33. What can be inferred frm the passage?
      A. Scientific mtivatin is unique t humans.
      B. Humanity’s shared values need t be changed.
      C. Discveries by AI might push past human bundaries.
      D. Humans shuld define the framewrk fr AI develpment.
      34. What des the authr intend t tell us?
      A. Science plays a decisive rle in wh we are.
      B. The desire fr scientific inquiry is here t stay.
      C. The autmated scenari is bund t materialize.
      D. Humanity and machines wrk twards the same gal.

Everyne wants t live in a gd neighbrhd. And fr a gd reasn: External cnditins matter t ur health and well-being. ____35____ If the human mind is likened t a sciety, then the mindset — thse beliefs, prcesses, cgnitive (认知的) resurces and habits that are readily accessible and familiar — represents the internal neighbrhd.
Just as the external envirnment affects health, s des the internal envirnment. Research shws that crime in yur neighbrhd can impact health, even if yu’re nt directly impacted by the vilence. ____36____ A chatic r vilent mindset may als have similar effects t thse f a lw-quality external neighbrhd.

The same ges fr the mental neighbrhd. Fr example, merely recgnizing my creative impulse as an imprtant aspect f my internal makeup — acknwledging and valuing it — will imprve my sense f well-being even when I am nt actively invlved in creative activity.
Cmmunity exercises much f its effect thrugh physical and behaviral engagement: Yu g places and d things.____38____ If yu spend time at the lcal cffee huse, yu’re engaged in yur cmmunity. If yu spend time regularly practicing, say, an attitude f gratitude — an awareness f the gd, frtunate things in yur life — then yur mental neighbrhd includes a gratitude cmpnent.
Finding, mving int, and nurturing ur cnnectins t a high-quality neighbrhd takes much effrt, yet the health-related payff is high. The same ges fr the mental neighbrhd. ____39____ Then yu can bring these mind elements t the frefrnt f yur cnsciusness thrugh mental engagement and practice.
      A. At the same time, internal cnditins matter t.
      B. Neighbrhds affect health thrugh multiple paths f influence.
      C. Pssible effects include increases in bld pressure and anxiety.
      D. Bth structural and scial aspects f a neighbrhd can affect yur well-being.

Being an advisr at my Ph.D. university seemed a great pprtunity t d the same fr thers. I enthusiastically applied and was excited t be matched with a student. But as ur first meeting drew clse, uncertainty set in. What if she asks a questin that I have n idea abut? Hw culd I be ready fr this leadership rle when I still have s far t g myself?
The day f ur first meeting, I was terrified. But nce my student jined the call, seeming very enthusiastic abut meeting me, and started t talk abut herself, I had a flashback t my wn cllege experience. I remembered struggling t handle getting int a research lab and applying t graduate schl. This student was prbably ging thrugh smething similar— feeling bth uncertainty and a fierce determinatin t achieve her prfessinal gals. We ended the meeting setting sme practical gals fr the year, including writing her persnal statement and practicing research presentatins.
As ur sessins cntinued, I still went int each ne, wrried that I wuld nt be prepared t slve every prblem my student encuntered. What mattered mst, I realized, was nt t be sme imaginary perfect teacher with all the answers, but t get t knw my student including her hpes and ambitins, and ffer whatever guidance and supprt I culd, based n my wn experiences. When I did nt knw the answer t an issue she raised, I was hnest abut it and did my best t listen, prvide feedback, and allw her t determine her best curse f actin. Smetimes, I was there simply t prvide a safe space t vent (发泄). I culd help even when I did nt have a slutin.
A few mnths after submitting her graduate schl applicatins, my student sent an email thanking me fr my supprt and guidance, which she said helped increase her cnfidence. She prbably desn’t knw that she helped increase my cnfidence, t. This was a jurney f mutual empwerment, making bth f us strnger alng the way.
