Then, in the 1990s, researchers fund a way t grw cttn plants that cntain a Bt gene (基因). The genetically imprved cttn plant prduces liquid that kills bllwrms. Farmers arund the wrld are nw grwing an estimated furteen millin hectares f Bt cttn.
Cttn bllwrms als attack ther crps. But scientists in China recently reprted that Bt cttn may help prevent bllwrms in ther crps grwing nearby. The study invlved crps grwn in three prvinces f nrthern China between 2000 and 2006.

But the researchers als pint ut cncerns. They say bllwrms culd develp resistance (抵制) t the cttn plants designed t resist them. The study invlved crps grwn in six prvinces f nrthern China between 1992 and 2008. The study area cntained three millin hectares f cttn.

Trees culd be mre imprtant t the earth’s climate than previusly thught, accrding t a new study that reveals frests help t blck ut the sun.
Scientists in the UK and Germany have discvered that trees release a chemical that thickens cluds abve them, which reflects mre sunlight and cls the earth. The research suggests that chpping dwn frests culd speed up glbal warming, and that prtecting existing trees culd be ne f the best ways t deal with the prblem.
The scientists lked at chemicals called terpenes that are released frm nrthern frests acrss nrthern regins such as Canada, Scandinavia and Russia. The chemicals give frests a special smell, but their functin has puzzled experts fr years. Sme believe the trees prduce them t cmmunicate, while thers say they culd ffer prtectin frm air pllutin.
The team fund the terpenes react in the air and frm aersls (气雾剂). They help t turn water vapr (蒸汽) in the atmsphere int cluds.
Spracklen said the team’s cmputer mdels shwed that the aersls dubled the thickness f cluds abut 1,000 meters abve the frests and wuld reflect an extra 5% sunlight back int space. He said, “It might nt sund a lt, but that is quite a strng cling effect.”
Because trees release mre terpenes in warmer weather, the discvery suggests that frests culd act as a negative feedback n climate, which slws the rise in temperature. The team lked at frests f mainly pine and spruce trees, but Spracklen said ther trees als prduce terpenes s the cling effect shuld be fund in ther regins, including trpical rainfrests.

      D. Trees prduce chemicals that thicken cluds and cl the Earth.
      13. Accrding t the team, what rle d terpenes play in the atmsphere?
      A. They react t frm aersls that help create cluds.
      B. They increase the temperature f the earth’s surface.
      C. They prevent sunlight frm reaching the grund.
      D. They prtect the earth frm harmful greenhuse gases.

      A. a prcess that causes extreme weather events
      B. a prcess that prvides frests with a special smell
      C. a prcess that reduces the pace f temperature rise
      D. a prcess that speeds up greenhuse effect arund the wrld
      15. What can be inferred abut the cling effect f frests?
      A. It has been widely knwn t scientists fr decades.
      B. It applies t many types f trees, nt just pine and spruce.
      C. It is mre effective in trpical rainfrests than in nrthern frests.
