In my jurney t understand Finnish happiness, I sught ut sme advice frm the lcal masters. A restaurant wner taught me hw traditinal fds can recnnect us with nature;a vibrant elderly wman demnstrated the pwer f fcus thrugh diving; a ceramic artist encuraged me t d things by hand — like reading, picking berries, r knitting; and almst everyne emphasized the sauna, which I tried myself there.
Back in New Yrk, I attempted t bring these int my wn life: I fund a backyard sauna in Brklyn, shpped at farmer’ markets, and tried grwing herbs. Hwever, my kitchen received little sunlight, s I carried my small garden up t the rf each mrning, smetimes frgetting t bring it back dwn at night. Summer strms saked (浸泡) the sil, and eventually, the herbs died and even the pts were thrwn away by smene. Then in late July, I went thrugh a rugh patch in my relatinship. I ate very little r cried at randm. Sn, even the sauna n lnger lifted my spirits.
I was sitting at the beach ne afternn, wndering why nature was nt making me feel better, when the answer hit me: I was trying t hard t live exactly like the Finns. I’d missed the pint f what all the masters were saying: Quiet the mind, and find pleasure in small acts and bservatins. “Simple things,” Ms. Pajunen, ne f the masters, had said. “This is at the cre f what Finns have t ffer the rest f the wrld.”

Yung students are ften cnsidered “digital natives”, with technlgy in every aspect f their lives. While this can be an advantage in sme situatins, research has fund that the impact is nt cmpletely psitive.
T cmpare the effectiveness f handwritten and typed classrm ntes, Pam Mueller frm Princetn and Daniel Oppenheimer frm UCLA cnducted experiments in a simulated (模拟的) classrm envirnment, where grups f students — sample sizes ranged frm 67 t 151 — watched vide lectures and tk ntes either by hand r n laptps, with the Internet switched ff and ther prgrams disabled t avid distractin.
After the lecture, the students first tk tests f wrking memry. Next, they were examined n what they retained frm the lectures. The tests cnsisted f bth factual questins and cnceptual-applicatin questins, which were designed t assess their understanding f key cncepts in the vides. The results shwed that while laptp users recrded much mre wrds, the tw grups perfrmed equally n factual questins. Hwever, laptp users perfrmed much wrse n cnceptual-applicatin questins.
T further explre the rle f nte-taking in lng-term learning, the researchers tested students a week later t determine if taking mre ntes n a laptp was helpful when reviewing befre the test. Withut nte review, bth grups shwed similar perfrmance; but with a 10-minute review, students with handwritten ntes perfrmed better n bth factual and cnceptual questins. The findings f the experiments might imply an advantage fr handwritten ntes in prcessing infrmatin. Hwever, it is als pssible that, because f prcessing infrmatin t a greater depth, reviewing these ntes reminded the students f the lecture infrmatin mre effectively than reviewing laptp ntes did.
“This isn’t abut whether t use technlgy, but abut hw t use it intentinally.” Pam Mueller nted, “When the gal is t deeply understand and apply cncepts, frcing students t actively engage with infrmatin by hand, rather than passively typing it, prves t be a mre effective apprach.”
8. What d Pam and Daniel’s experiments fcus n?
A. The value f tw nte-taking methds.B. The lng-term benefits f handwriting.
C. The effectiveness f writing lessns.D. The advantages f technlgy in memry.

B. Taking mre ntes leads t better perfrmance.
C. Laptp ntes are superir fr memrizing facts.
D. Mre detailed ntes help with shrt-term recall.
11. What des Pam Mueller suggest abut classrm technlgy?
A. Replace it with handwriting.B. Avid it in cnceptual learning.
C. Use it fr deep understanding.D. Apply it based n learning gals.

Researchers at the University f Maryland have develped batteries that use a prduct fund in crustacean (甲壳纲动物) shells t stre energy. The new batteries are mre ec-friendly, energy efficient and affrdable cmpared t traditinal nes. The scientists are nw pushing t have the prduct adpted in the cmmercial prductin f batteries. They say that using this prduct is necessary wing t the increased mve twards electric cars and green energy at large.
The wrld is rapidly changing twards green energy and batteries are at the center f this mve, s it is necessary t make batteries ec-friendly. “We think bth bidegradability (生物降解性) f material and the perfrmance f the batteries are imprtant fr a prduct, which has the ptential t be cmmercialized,” said Liangbing Hu, the lead authr f the study.
Accrding t the study published in Matter, traditinal batteries culd be quite harmful t the envirnment. Fr instance, prducts such as lithium (锂)used in batteries can stay in the envirnment fr hundreds r thusands f years.
Crustaceans such as shrimp, lbsters and crabs have hard skeletns whse cells cntain a substance making the shells hard and resistant. Interestingly, this substance is available widely in nature and is ften thrwn away as waste in fd industries. Scientists believe that the prduct culd be used t imprve the perfrmance f batteries.
The researchers were able t cme up with a cheaper and mre renewable battery which is 99.7% energy efficient even after 1000 battery cycles. That is abut 400 hurs. Further, they fund that the batteries can break dwn in sil in five mnths. The leftver zinc, a cmmn metal, can be recvered fr cntinuus recycling.
“The design f new batteries that are respectful f the envirnment, cheap and prducing high discharge capacity, is ne f the mre imprtant items that must be develped in the cming years,” said Antni Rmer, prfessr f material sciences at the University f Cartagena in Spain.
12. Why are researchers develping the new batteries?
A. T emply a prduct as strage.B. T replace the traditinal batteries.
C. T address needs f clean energy.D. T use waste frm fd industries.
13. What is an advantage f emplying the substance frm crustaceans?
A. It csts less than lithium.B. It reduces fd waste.
C. It makes batteries harder.D. It is naturally plentiful.
14. Hw des the authr describe the new batteries in paragraph 5?
A. By quting experts.B. By prviding statistics.
C. By giving examples.D. By making cmparisns.
15. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Lithium Batteries: A Threat t Envirnment
B. Crustacean Shells Pwering Future Batteries
C. Fd Waste: A New Surce f Green Energy
D. Zinc Recvery Supprting Battery Develpment

Last week, frzen ckie dugh (面团) helped me in repairing a neighbrhd cnflict.
It all began when a new neighbr, a cllege student, mved in acrss the street. He unladed a set f crnhle bards (袋板球游戏) frm a truck and placed them n his frnt yard. I knew thse bards were fr “crnhle,” an utdr game where yu thrw bags at a hle n the ppsite bards. But the sight f the bards brught back bad memries fr me. Years ag, my husband and I lived near the university, where the sunds f cheering crwds and lud music lasted late int the night and early mrning. We finally mved t a quieter part f twn at great expense t escape the nise.
I had inherited rage (暴怒) and struggled t change. I went t the dctr, which helped sften it, but it was still inside me like a vlcan. Occasinally, it expldes, and I say things I regret. The best way I repair damage is with fd — gifting hmemade sup, bread, r treats. I had seen hw this culd pen a hurt heart. Of curse, I’d rather nt hurt anyne.
Nw, seeing thse bards thrugh my kitchen windw, thse frustrating memries and anger rushed back. I marched ver, kncked, and demanded their remval due t the nise the game wuld create. I expected an aplgy. Instead, he met my anger with his wn: “Wh are yu? What gives yu the right t make such a ridiculus demand?” His refusal t aplgize angered me mre. I yelled things that shcked me. My husband, seeing the crnhle bards and predicting my reactin, pulled me away as I tld the yung man it wasn’t ver.
The rest f the day, I still felt angry. Hwever, the next mrning, I awke ashamed. I questined why I messed things up again, and why I culdn’t cntrl my anger. I recalled hw I’d hurt thers befre — like a friend and my sn — and hw I’d used fd t aplgize.
