Sitting in the garden fr my friend’s birthday. I felt a buzz (振动) in my pcket. My heart raced when I saw the email sender’s name. The email started ff: “Dear Mr Green, thank yu fr yur interest” and “the review prcess tk lnger than expected.” It ended with “We are srry t infrm yu…” and my visin blurred (模糊). The psitin—measuring sil quality in the Sahara Desert as part f an undergraduate research prgramme — had felt like the answer I had spent years lking fr.
I had put s much time and emtinal energy int applying, and I thught the rejectin meant the end f the rad fr my science career.
S I was shcked when, nt lng after the email, Prfessr Mary Devn, wh was running the prgramme, invited me t bserve the wrk being dne in her lab. I jumped at the chance, and a few weeks later I was equally shcked—and verjyed—when she invited me t talk with her abut ptential prjects I culd pursue in her lab. What she prpsed didn’t seem as exciting as the riginal prject I had applied t, but I was ging t give it my all.
I fund myself wrking with a rbtics prfessr n techniques fr cllecting data frm the desert remtely. That prject, which I culd cmplete frm my sfa instead f in the burning heat f the desert, nt nly survived the lckdwn but wrked where traditinal methds didn’t. In the end, I had a new scientific interest t pursue.
When I applied t graduate schl, I fund three prgrammes prmising t allw me t fllw my desired research directin. And I applied with the same anxius excitement as befre. When I was rejected frm ne that had seemed like a perfect fit, it was undubtedly difficult. But this time I had the perspective (视角) t keep it frm sending me int panic. It helped that in the end I was accepted int ne f the ther prgrammes I was als excited abut.
Rather than setting plans in stne, I’ve learned that smetimes I need t take the pprtunities that are ffered, even if they dn’t sund perfect at the time, and make the mst f them.
      4. Hw did the authr feel upn seeing the email sender’s name?
      A. Anxius.B. Angry.C. Surprised.D. Settled.
      5. After talking with Prfessr Devn, the authr decided t ________.
      A. criticise the review prcess B. stay lnger in the Sahara Desert
      C. apply t the riginal prject againD. put his heart and sul int the lab wrk
      6. Accrding t the authr, the prject with the rbtics prfessr was ________.
      A. demanding B. inspiring C. misleading D. amusing
      7. What can we learn frm this passage?

      C
As hurtful as it can be fr a friend r partner t put us dwn, it is far wrse when we find a critic in ur wn head that keeps criticizing and dubting urselves. T break free frm the self-criticism, and achieve inner peace and self-acceptance, an extremely imprtant step is t understand the three “parts” f us: the inner critic, the inner victim and the inner bserver.
The inner critic sits deeply within ur sense f urselves. That means that it — r the seeds f it — was placed there at an early age. Fr example, if ur parents called us stupid r wrthless as a child, it is understandable that ur child-self wuld learn t be self-critical and view urselves with dubt r even shame. Since all humans are imperfect, the inner critic’s message may make the inner victim “bjectively” believe what the inner critic has said and feel wrthless.
On the ther hand, the inner bserver is a kind f self-awareness. It understands the inner critic’s rigin and mtivatin and, in all likelihd, wuld nt agree with what the inner critic has said — and might even ffer a few chice wrds in respnse. Fr instance, it might remind the inner victim, “Remember, even if yu feel what the critic has said is true, it des nt mean that it is true.” In ther wrds, the inner bserver ffers a pssibility fr change by cnnecting with the tw “parts” t help us achieve self-acceptance and inner peace.
Having recgnized the dynamics amng the three “parts” f us, we can start t break free frm self-criticism. First, reflect n why the child-self s ften feels bad in the upsetting present-day situatins. Then, respnd t the child-self’s pain with sympathy and cmpassin. Once the child-self’s pain is addressed, we are able t questin r even free urselves frm self-criticism. Thugh it may be a lng prcess frm self-criticism t self-acceptance, in the end, we can find greater inner peace and build a happier relatinship with urselves.
T learn mre abut hw t cmfrt the child-self, let’s watch this brief vide, Healing Yur Inner Child, nw.
      8. Which statement will the authr prbably agree with?
      A. Self-dubt was brn with human beings. B. The inner critic’s message is usually right.
      C. Parents’ criticism may have lasting effects.D. Many adults are t sensitive t criticism.
      9. What is the inner bserver’s mst imprtant functin?
      A. T find gd excuses fr the self-child.
      B. T prvide reliable evidence fr the inner critic.
      C. T help us becme mre sympathetic twards thers.
      D. T challenge ur false beliefs and heal us frm within.
      10. What is paragraph 4 mainly abut?
      A. The jurney t self-acceptance. B. The varius types f self-dubting.
      C. The relatinship amng ur three “parts”.D. The benefits f dealing with self-dubting.
      11. Where is the text mst prbably taken frm?
      A. A textbk. B. A psychlgy lecture.
      C. An advertisement.D. An intrductin t a vide.
      D
Psychlgical science is full f interesting tpics, many f which tell a cherent picture f human nature, but sme f which create seemingly cntradictry stries. A case in pint is the tricky and misunderstd verlap (重叠) between strength-based science and the research n narcissism (自恋).
There is nw cnvincing evidence t shw that narcissism is n the rise, especially in ur yuth. In my wn research n strength-based parenting, it is cmmn fr peple t wrngly label this apprach as a recipe fr narcissism. Their argument seems t be that a child wh knws their strengths will autmatically view themselves as better than everyne else. It is argued that the self-assurance that cmes with identifying and using their psitive qualities will make a child arrgant, selfish and uncaring. Genuine cnfidence abut ne’s strengths is categrized as ver-cnfidence; desirable self-knwledge is branded as excessive self-admiratin.
Why des this ccur? It’s partly because mre is knwn abut narcissism than strengths. While strengths psychlgy has largely stayed within the limit f academic jurnals r has been applied nly within certain cntexts such as the wrkplace, research n narcissism has made its way int the mass media and int ur cllective cnsciusness. The New Yrk Times nted that narcissism is a favred “g-t” tpic and that peple everywhere are diagnsing thers with it.
The fear that a strength-based apprach will cause narcissism als ccurs because we unknwingly fall prey t binary (非此即彼) thinking. We mistakenly believe that ne cannt be bth cnfident and humble. We fcus n Dnald Trump and Kim Kardashian rather than Mahatma Gandhi and Mther Teresa. There’s n way that Gandhi and Mther Teresa culd have achieved what they did withut cnfidence in their strengths, and yet they are bth pillars f mdesty and selflessness.
When we assume that strength-fcus is the same as a self-fcus, we fail t entertain the idea that peple wh knw their strengths are, actually, mre likely t be pr-scial and fcus n helping thers.
It’s tempting t cnclude that every yung persn is at risk f becming a narcissist but I’d like t stand up fr the thusands f yung kids I have wrked with wh are caring, thughtful and humble—even when they use their strengths.
      12. Which des the underlined wrd “cherent” pssibly mean?
      A. Reasnable.B. Primary.C. Cmplicated.D. Beneficial.
      13. Why teenagers’ strengths are ften mistaken fr narcissism?
      A. Teenagers with strengths are always arrgant, selfish and uncaring.
      B. The public are mre expsed t research n narcissism.
      C. There is a lack f strengths in ur cllective cnsciusness.
      D. Numbers f peple are diagnsed with narcissism by dctrs.
      14. The authr mentins Gandhi and Teresa in paragraph 4 t shw that ________.
      A. they are bth victims f binary thinking
      B. public figures unknwingly fall prey t narcissism
      C. cnfidence is quite imprtant fr celebrities
      D. ne can be bth mdest and sure f himself
      15. What’s the authr’s attitude twards yung kids’ strength-based appraches?
      A. Skeptical.B. Neutral.C. Favrable.D. Cautius.
