Since Cynthia Flri was a lifeguard at Tbay Beach in the 1990s, she has watched the cean apprach the shre and draw clser t the dunes (沙丘). It’s what frced Flri, 53, f Massapequa, t take part in the Twn f Oyster Bay’s annual dune grass planting event n March 30 — an effrt t help stabilize the beach dunes against shreline ersin (侵蚀).
Alng with ther vlunteers, Flri had spent hurs with her daughter, Kyra Flri-Marinell, 15, and her daughter’s friend Tatum Brennan, 15, planting the native plants that were intended t absrb water and prepare the sand against heavy wind. But fur days later, a strm n Wednesday hit Lng Island and washed the new plants away. “The latest dune planting event drew mre than 150 vlunteers wh planted a lt acrss 2.7 acres f Atlantic Ocean sand dunes,” said Marta Kane, an Oyster Bay spkeswman. “The dune grass cst the twn $32,000.”
The event, centered n vlunteerism, drew sme families whse elders were lking t share a message with a yunger generatin abut the imprtance f prtecting the envirnment. While the utcme resulted in a wave f disappintment, fr sme vlunteers that was cupled with a sense f renewed mtivatin. Maria Rizzi, 70, f Massapequa, participated in the planting sessin with her grandsn, Andrew Lepsis, 10. She said she wuld g back fr anther event with even mre family members. “I’d be willing t d it again,” she said. “I’d even talk the lder grand kids int cming.”
While the strm swept the new plants away, Flri said Tbay Beach’s appearance aftermath serves as a pwerful reminder f the need fr mre vlunteer wrk n that stretch f sand. “Maybe it will inspire mre peple t vlunteer and understand the need fr us t prtect ur beaches,” Flri said.

Trillins f evlutin’s wnders, red-eyed peridical cicadas (蝉) that have pumps in their heads and jet-like muscles in their bdies, are abut t emerge in numbers nt seen in decades and pssibly centuries. Crawling ut frm undergrund every 13 r 17 years, with a cllective sng as lud as jet engines, the peridical cicadas are nature’s kings f the calendar. These black bugs with bulging eyes differ frm their greener cusins that cme ut annually. They stay buried year after year, until they surface and take ver a landscape.
This spring, an unusual cicada duble ppulatin is abut t invade a cuple f parts f the United States in what University f Cnnecticut cicada expert Jhn Cley called “cicada-geddn”. The last time these tw brds (a grup f creatures) came ut tgether was in 1803. Thmas Jeffersn, the then president, wrte abut cicadas in his Garden Bk but mistakenly called them lcusts (蝗虫). Usually mistaken fr hungry and unrelated lcusts, peridical cicadas are mre annying rather than causing great ecnmic damage. They can hurt yung trees and sme fruit crps, but it’s nt widespread and can be prevented.
The largest gegraphic brd in the natin — called Brd XIX and cming ut every 13 years — is abut t march thrugh the Sutheast, having already created cuntless brehles in the red Gergia clay. It’s a sure sign f the cming cicada ccupatin. “They emerge when the grund warms t 64 degrees, which is happening earlier than it used t because f climate change,” scientists said. “The bugs are brwn at first but darken as they mature.”
Sn after the insects appear in large numbers in Gergia and the rest f the Sutheast, cicada cusins that cme ut every 17 years will inundate Illinis. They are Brd ⅩⅢ. “And when yu put thse tw tgether… yu wuld have mre than anywhere else any ther time,” University f Maryland entmlgist Paula Shrewsbury said. “These tw brds may actually verlap — but prbably nt interbreed in a small area near central Illinis.”
      8. Hw are peridical cicadas different frm their greener cusins?
      A. They appear nce a year.B. They lk mre beautiful.
      C. They have strnger muscles.D. They have a lnger life circle.
      9. What is a cmmn belief n peridical cicadas?
      A. They are a type f lcusts.B. They have underestimated advantages.
      C. They are Thmas Jeffersn’s inspiratin.D. They nly eat yung trees and fruit crps.
      10. What can be inferred abut Brd ⅩⅨ?
      A. The red Gergia clay is mre beneficial t them.
      B. Climate change may be cnfusing their schedules.
      C. The adult nes nly live 4-6 weeks befre they die.
      D. They are expected t be fund thrughut the wrld.
      11. What can best replace the underlined wrd “inundate” in the last paragraph?

Cmmn water plants culd prvide a green energy surce. Scientists have figured ut hw t get large amunts f il frm duckweed, ne f nature’s fastest-grwing water plants. Transferring such plant il int bidiesel (生物柴油) fr transprtatin and heating culd be a big part f a mre sustainable future.
Fr a new study, researchers genetically engineered duckweed plants t prduce seven times mre il per acre than sybeans. Jhn Shanklin, a bichemist, says further research culd duble the engineered duckweed’s il utput in the next few years.
Unlike fssil fuels, which frm undergrund, bifuels can be refreshed faster than they are used. Fuels made frm new and used vegetable ils, animal fat and seaweed can have a lwer carbn ftprint than fssil fuels d, but there has been a recent negative view against them. This is partly because s many crps nw g int energy prductin rather than fd; bifuels take up mre than 100 millin acres f the wrld’s agricultural land.
Duckweed, cmmn n every cntinent but Antarctica, is amng the wrld’s mst prductive plants, and the researchers suggest it culd be a game-changing renewable energy surce fr three key reasns. First, it grws readily in water, s it wuldn’t cmpete with fd crps fr agricultural land. Secnd, duckweed can grw fast in agricultural pllutin released int the water. Third, Shanklin and his team fund a way t avid a majr bitechnlgical barrier. Fr the new study, Shanklin says, the researchers added an il-prducing gene, “turning it n like a light switch” by intrducing a particular mlecule (分子) nly when the plant had finished grwing. Shanklin says, “If it replicates (自我复制) in ther species — and there’s n reasn t think that it wuld nt — this can slve ne f ur biggest issues, which is hw we can make mre il in mre plants withut negatively affecting grwth.”
T expand prductin t industrial levels, scientists will need t design and prduce large-scale bases fr grwing engineered plants and btaining il — a challenge, Shanklin says, because duckweed is a nn-mainstream crp withut much existing infrastructure (基础设施).
      12. What can peple get frm duckweed first-hand?
      A. Plant il.B. Stable diesel.
      C. Sustainable water.D. Natural heat.
      13. What des paragraph 4 mainly cnvey?
      A. Optins fr renewable energy.
      B. Reasns fr engineering genes.
      C. The ptential f the revlutinary energy surce.
      D. The apprach t aviding agricultural pllutin.
      14. What is the decisive factr t mass-prduce the plant?
      A. Industrial levels.B. Unique design.
      C. Academic research.D. Basic facilities.
      15. What wuld be the best title fr the text?
      A. Duckweed PwerB. Duckweed Prductin
      C. Genetic EngineeringD. Genetic Testing

Its shiny bdy shne under the glden rays f the sun, but its freedm was cruelly limited by the trap. With each struggle, the net tightened arund its delicate bdy, leaving painful marks n its skin. Its tail flapped helplessly, each mvement a request fr help, while its desperate cries fr assistance eched thrugh the air.
A sense f urgency filled her, pushing her frward with determinatin and reslve. Realizing that time was tight, Amelia knew she had t act instantly t free this inncent creature frm its difficult psitin befre it submitted t exhaustin r the frce f the tides.
