Sme mnths later Judith was invited as a speaker at a cnference n feminism (女权主义). Her lecture turned

me.
When I returned t Australia, her nging cmpaninship tk the frm f bks, chapters and articles that

Arund the wrld, researchers like Hwes are lking int hw nnvisual infrmatin defines the character f
a city and affects its livability. Oguz Oner, an academic and musician, has spent years rganizing sund walks in
Istanbul where blindflded (蒙住眼睛的) participants describe what they hear at different places. His research has
figured ut lcatins where vegetatin culd be planted t reduce traffic nise r where a wave rgan culd be built
t strengthen the cmfrting sunds f the sea.
Researchers use varius ways t get peple’s feelings twards the sensry experiences. But as data cllectin
becmes mre widespread, many experts warn the public abut privacy. Fairness and inclusin als cme int play
when determining whse sensry experiences shuld be included int urban planning. Pr urban cmmunities
have typically suffered nise and dr pllutin frm highways and factries, yet they are als ften targeted by
nise cmplaints, fr example, when their neighburhds gentrify (贵族化).
“Sensry perceptins are nt neutral, r simply bilgical; whether we find smething pleasant r nt has been
shaped culturally and scially,” says Mnica Mntserrat Degen, an urban cultural scilgist at Brunel University
Lndn. Degen uses the example f a Lndn neighburhd where cheap restaurants that served as hanguts fr

fund it annying rather than welcming. “Nw it smells like cappuccins.”

D. Ordinary peple can’t enjy the wave sund.
10. What is paragraph 3 mainly abut?
A. Cncerns in urban planning. B. Challenges in urban life study.
C. Methds fr cllecting sensry data. D. Nise pllutin in pr cmmunities.

B. Technlgy can slve prblems f sensry data.

Languages are like living rganism, develping ver time. Charles Darwin himself nted the similarities.“The
frmatin f different languages and f distinct species,” he writes in The Descent f Man,“are parallel (平行的).”
Nw, new research in Nature Eclgy & Evlutin shws that the similarity runs deeper.Islands, lng
recgnized as drivers f bilgical diversity (多元化), are just as much engines f linguistic (语言学的) diversity.
Drawing n a database f languages frm mre than 13,000inhabited (有人居住的) islands, the study shws that
sme f the same patterns hld true in bth life and language.
In 1967, bilgists prpsed that the number f plant and animal species n any given island depends largely
n tw factrs: its size and its distance frm the mainland. The larger the island, the clser t cntinents, the mre
species it has. In line with the first principle, Lindell Brmham, leader f the study, and her clleagues fund that
the number f languages n an island increases with area. As fr the secnd, they didn’t find a direct relatinship.
This is prbably because, while plants and animals nly cme t islands by chance, humans d it n purpse.
Island languages tend t have far fewer phnemes (音位) than mainland nes. Perhaps these languages lse
phnemic diversity in the same way that ppulatins lse genetic diversity when they separate frm the mainland.
Anther pssibility is that in faraway ppulatins, there are nt many neighburing languages t mix, s speakers
dn’t need as many. Yet anther difference between island languages and species is that plants and animals are
ging extinct at a wrrying speed, with 50 percent f endangered species living n islands. Languages are als in
danger, but based n this new study, island languages are n mre endangered than thse n the mainland.
Nevertheless, Brmham says that prtecting island languages is crucial.“We want t highlight hw amazing it
is that we have all these different slutins t human cmmunicatin.Any language lss is a lss fr all f us,” she
says.
12. What des the new research shw?
A. Darwin’s thery is supprted by linguistic data.
B. Inhabited islands are hme t different languages.
C. Languages and species develp at the same speed.
第 7页/共 13页
D. Islands drive bth bilgical and linguistic diversity.
13. The reasn fr the indirect relatinship between language and distance t mainland is
A Islands’ diversified races
B. Species’ accidental death
C. Human’s intentinal arrival
D. Languages’ unlimited spread
14. What is the feature f island languages cmpared with the mainland nes?
A. Glbally spread. B. Highly endangered.
C. Linguistically mixed. D. Phnemically reduced.
15. What is the main idea f the text?
A. Island languages are endangered.
B. Island languages are underdevelped.
C Islands are the labratries f bidiversity.
D. Islands are the engines f language and life.
