Dgs have been clse fur-legged friends f humans fr as lng as we can remember, but exactly hw lng
has this relatinship lasted? Scientists may finally have an answer, thanks t a new study n ancient human remains
fund in Alaska. The research suggests that the strng bnd between humans and the ancestrs f tday’s dgs
      began 12,000 years ag.
“We nw have prf that dgs and humans had clse cnnectins earlier than we thught in the Americas,”
said the study’s lead authr, Francis Lane, an assistant researcher at the University f Arizna’s Schl f
      Anthrplgy.
“Peple interested in the rigins f the Americans want t knw if the first humans arrived with dgs. Until
we find these animals in ld digging sites, we can nly guess — it’s hard t cnfirm. This discvery is very
      significant.”
In a 2018 archaelgical study, the same team fund a lwer leg bne frm an adult dg like animal at a site in
Alaska. Carbn dating shwed the animal lived 12,000 years ag, near the end f the Ice Age. Mre recently, in
June 2023, the team dug up an 8,100-year-ld jawbne frm a similar animal at a nearby site.
Fr the new study, scientists perfrmed chemical tests n these bnes. They fund salmn prteins, suggesting
these animals ate fish regularly. This was unusual because dg- like animals at the time nly hunted land animals,
      shwing human influence.
While the team believes this is the earliest knwn relatinship between humans and dgs, they say it’s t
sn t be certain. A key questin remains: “What defines a dg?” said Dr. Ben Pt, a c- authr f the study and
an archaelgist at the University f Alaska Fairbanks. Thugh these creatures acted and lked like dgs, they
might be t ancient t be genetically cnnected t mdern dgs we knw tday.
      4. What is the main idea f the passage?
      A. Humans and dgs develped a clse bnd 12,000 years ag.
      B. Scientists discvered the ldest human remains in America.
      C. Ancient dgs survived the Ice Age by eating fish.
      D. A new study prves dgs riginated in Alaska.
      5. What can we infer abut the significance f the discvery?
      A. It shws early human- dg friendship. B. It prves dgs came befre humans.
      C. It changes ice Age theries. D. It explains dg DNA fully.
      6. Hw was the age f the bne determined in the 2018 study?
      第 4页/共 11页
      A. Genetic testing. B. Prtein analysis.
      C. Carbn dating. D. Site cmparisn.
      7. Why is the team uncertain abut the earliest human-dg relatinship?
      A. Weak DNA link. B. Nt sure what is a “dg”.
      C. Few bne samples. D. unclear fish prtein results.
      C
Bat habitats (栖息地) are damaged by human activities despite their cntributin t ur envirnment. T
ensure that we can study and imprve the health f ur bat ppulatin, we need t lcate their habitats. But finding
their habitats seems like a tall rder. They are small and fast and primarily fly at night.
Our new research cmbines ur previus mathematical mdel f bat mvement with data gathered frm sund
recrders knwn as “bat detectrs”. They are placed arund the envirnment and left there fr several nights.
Bats are able t “see with sund” when they’re flying. If the sunds are made within 10 t 15 meters f a bat
detectr, the device is started t make a recrding, prviding a prper recrd f where and when a bat is present.
The sund recrdings als prvide infrmatin abut the species f bat. Greater hrseshe bats make a very unique
call at exactly 82 kHz, s we can easily tell whether the species is present r nt.
Our mdel can als be used t predict the frequency (预测频率) f bat calls based n a given habitat lcatin.
S, we divided the envirnment int grids (网格). The squares whse recrders best cllect the bat data will then be
the mst likely lcatins f the habitats. This simple methd can be applied t whle landfrms.
Cutting ut the regins that are least likely t have the habitats can mean we reduce the search space t less
than 1% f the firstly surveyed area, simplifying the prcess f finding bat habitats frees researchers t fcus n
safeguarding these areas, rather than struggling t find them.
In 2022 we develped an app that uses publicly surced data t predict bat flight lines. At the mment, the
app can help researchers, develpers r lcal authrity planners knw hw the envirnment is used by bats.
Hwever, it needs the habitat lcatin t be prvided first, and this infrmatin is nt always knwn. Our new
research remves this difficulty, making the app easier t use.
      8. What des the underlined phrase in paragraph 1 imply abut lcating a bat habitat?
      A. It attracts a lt f interest. B. It is an extremely difficult task.
      C. It has shwn impressive prgress. D. It ften leads t unexpected discveries.
      9. Why is the greater hrseshe bat mentined in the text?
      第 5页/共 11页
      A. T prve the exactness f sund recgnitin. B. T intrduce the species’ survival skills.
      C. T explain bats’ mvement in darkness. D. T discuss bats’ habitat preferences.
      10. What effect des the grid-based methd in the new mdel primarily achieve?
A It helps cunt bats in different areas. B. It cntrls the sund frequency f bat calls.
      C. It reduces the influence f human activities. D. It enables prper judgment f pssible habitats.
      11. What limitatin f the 2022 app des the new research deal with?
      A. Inability t tell apart bat species.
      B. Difficulty in guiding bats’ flight.
      C. Dependence n pre-knwn habitat details.
      D. Unsuitability fr certain envirnmental cnditins.

“It’s alive ” I say, mstly t myself, but als t my sister, Kirsten, wh stands behind me. My arms are

      disease, X fastidisa.
I became aware f the pr cnditins f Puglia’s live trees in the summer f 2018; the news came at a hard
time fr ur family. After we returned frm ur first visit, we were surprised t learn Mm had a stress fracture (应
力性骨折) in her ft. As a result, she was finally wheel-chaired. In the fall f 2017, she was diagnsed (确诊)
with a rare disease called prgressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). Like X. fastidisa, it’s a killer that has n knwn
      cure (治愈方法).
Nw, the gd news is that live trees have hpe. Certain varieties are lucky dgs, prving healthy even when
expsed t X. fastidisa. Scientists are grafting (嫁接) branches frm these trees t the remaining uninfected (未受
感染的) nes. The hpe is that they can mix and prevent the further spread f death. My family has hpe, t. The
      U. S. Natinal Institutes f Health recently prvided a majr fund t cnduct research n PSP.
Befre Kirsten and I leave Masseria Brancati, we return t The Elephant t say gdbye. I reach up and gently

      C. T recall her ld memries.
D T check its health cnditins.
      13. What happened t Mm after the authr’s first visit t Puglia?
      A. She was diagnsed with X. fastidisa.
      B. She gave up traveling abrad.
      C. She fell frm her wheelchair,
      D. She suffered frm a killer disease.
      14. Why des the authr call certain trees “lucky dgs” in paragraph 4?
      A. They culd still stay well-ff despite expsure t X. fastidisa.
      B. They kept alive healthily with the grafted branches.
      C. They’ve been saved thanks t scientists’ effrts.
      D. They’ve prevented further spread f tree death.
15 What message des the authr mst want t give us?
      A. We shuld keep hpeful when life is dwn.
      B. We shuld prtect wildlife in the right ways.
      C. We shuld carry n ancient traditins.
