It was nt just that it was the end f a wnderful hliday; it was nt just that he invariably suffered badly frm jet lag (时差); it was that Mnday mrning always began with a team meeting and, ver the mnths, he had grwn t hate them.
Martin was aware that clleagues apprached these meetings with hidden agenda (会议
议程); they indulged in (沉溺于) game playing; and he knew that peple were nt being hnest and pen. The meetings themselves were bad enugh - there was all the maning afterwards at the meeting like “I culd have imprved n that idea, but I wasn’t ging t say.”
As this mrning’s meeting began, Martin prepared himself fr the usual dullness and bredm. But, as the meeting prgressed, he became aware f a strange backgrund nise. At first, he thught that he was still hearing the engine nise frm the aircraft that had brught him back t Lndn. But as he cncentrated n the nise, it became a little clearer.
He realized, t his amazement, that he culd actually hear what they were thinking at the same time as they were speaking. What surprised him, even mre than the acquisitin f the strange pwer, was that he discvered that what peple were saying was nt really what they were thinking. They were nt making clear their reservatins. They were nt supprting views which they thught might be ppular. They were nt cntributing their new insights.
Martin fund it impssible nt t respnd t his new knwledge. S he started t make gentle interventins, based mre n what he culd hear his clleagues thinking than n what he culd hear them saying. “S, Jhn, are yu really saying…” “Susan, d yu really think that?” “Tm, have yu gt an idea n hw we culd take this frward?” They lked at him, puzzled. In truth, he felt rather prud f his newly - acquired talent.
As the meeting prgressed, it was clear t him that each member f the meeting was learning hw t hear the thughts f the thers. The game playing started t fall away; peple started t speak mre directly; views became better understd; the atmsphere became mre pen and trusting.
The meeting ended. As peple left the rm, Martin fund that he culd still hear what they were thinking. “That was the best meeting we’ve ever had.” “All meetings shuld be like that.” “In future, I’m ging t say what I think.”

Scientists have created by accident an enzyme(酶)that breaks dwn plastic drinks bttles. The breakthrugh culd help slve the glbal plastic pllutin crisis by enabling fr the first time the full recycling f bttles.
The new research was prmpted by the discvery in 2016 f the first bacterium that had naturally evlved t eat plastic at a waste dump in Japan. Scientists have nw revealed the detailed structure f the crucial enzyme prduced by the bug.
An internatinal team then adjusted the enzyme t see hw it had evlved, but tests shwed they had accidentally made the mlecule even better at breaking dwn the plastic used fr drinks bttles. "What actually turned ut was we imprved the enzyme, which was a bit f a shck," said head researcher Prf. McGeehan, at the University f Prtsmuth, UK.
Currently, the enzyme takes a few days t start breaking dwn the plastic, far faster than the centuries it takes in the ceans, but the researchers are ptimistic this can be speeded up even further and becme a practical large - scale prcess.
"What we are hping t d is use this enzyme t turn this plastic back int its riginal cmpnents, s we can literally recycle it back t plastic," said McGeehan. "It means we wn't need t dig up any mre il and, fundamentally, it shuld reduce the amunt f plastic in the envirnment."
Abut 1 millin plastic bttles are sld each minute arund the glbe and, with just 14% recycled, many end up in the ceans where they have plluted even the remtest parts, harming marine life and ptentially peple wh eat seafd. "Plastic is incredibly resistant t decmpsitin," ne f these wnder materials that has been made a little bit t well.
Currently thse bttles that are recycled can nly be turned int nt transparent fibres fr clthing r carpets, while the new enzyme indicates a way t recycle ld clear plastic bttles back int new clear plastic bttles.
"Yu are always up against the fact il is cheap, s plastic is cheap," said McGeehan. "It is s easy fr manufacturers t generate mre f that stuff, rather than even try t recycle, but I believe there is a public interest here: attitude is changing s much that cmpanies are starting t lk at hw they can prperly recycle these bttles."
Prf. Adisa Azapagic, at the University f Manchester in the UK, agreed the enzyme culd be useful but added: "A full life - cycle assessment wuld be needed t ensure that the technlgy des nt slve ne envirnmental prblem—waste—at the expense f thers, including additinal greenhuse gas emissins."
      61. What d we learn frm the passage abut an enzyme scientists have created?
      A. It was identified during a lab experiment accident.
      B. It may make full recycling f plastic bttles a reality.
      C. It was a breakthrugh made with persistent effrts.
      D. It may mtivate a dramatic refrm in plastic industry.
      62. What des the passage say abut the bug that prduces the imprtant enzyme?
      A. It has a natural ability t cnsume plastics.
      B. It is a bacterium that reprduces at a high rate.
      C. It is essential t the recycling f plastic bttles.
      D. It has a chemical structure unknwn t scientists.
      63. By adjusting the enzyme prduced by the bug, the scientists ______.
      A. made it mre effective by chanceB altered its basic mlecular cmpsitin
C discvered an extrardinary chemicalD. fund its evlutinary prcess sped up
      64. What des Prf. McGeehan say abut the recycling f plastic bttles?
      A. Manufacturers are implementing it n an increasingly larger scale.
      B. It generates huge business pprtunities fr plastic manufacturers.

      D
When smene asks us “what d yu d?” we nearly always reply with ur jb. Wrk, fr many f us, is much mre than a jb. It is the defining part f ur identity. Fr many f us it is thrugh ur jb that we can define urselves.
“Withut my jb I dn’t knw wh I am,” is a sentence that has been said n mre than a few ccasins frm my ffice chair. Indeed, it can be ne f the mst difficult parts I wrk n with clients wh have lst r been made t change their jbs. This lss causes an identity crisis much greater than the lss f the jb itself.
One f the things I have cme t understand, hwever, is that ur identity is much mre than we might ntice at first. If we take the time t think, we might recgnize that as well as ur wrk we can als see urselves as a friend, a husband r wife, a sn r daughter, a parent, a member f a sprts team r religius grup. We may recgnize that we feel and act differently in these rles and relatinships than we d at wrk. The passive daughter becmes a cnfident leader at wrk. Furthermre, ur identities at wrk are nt fixed. They change ver time. I myself have been a shp assistant, a waitress, a student, a graduate, and a clinical psychlgist. At each stage my ability t adapt t and develp my career identity has been very imprtant t my happiness. While we like t remve uncertainty in ur lives, at sme level we have t deal with uncertainty, especially in tday’s changeable and always - shifting jb market.
Hw we see urselves is central t the issue f ur identity. When we tell urselves “I’m gd at starting prjects but nt s great at finishing them” it can becme part f ur belief system. But if yu have the unlucky experience f a frced jb change yu will need t examine thse beliefs t see hw based in reality they are. Yu will need t ask yurself hw helpful these beliefs are and think abut persnal change. We can change ur beliefs, behaviurs and emtinal experience at any time thrugh trying ut new things, practice and cnscius self - cntrl. In an age where career develpment may lead us int new areas it is mre and mre imprtant t questin ur sense f self and explre whether yu can create a new experience f yur identity by changing the beliefs yu have abut yurself in rder t widen yur career chices. Ultimately it is yu wh define wh yu are. Yu are nly yur
jb if yu let it be s.
      66. What d we learn frm the passage abut ne's lss f a jb?
      A. It frces them t visit a clinical psychlgist.
