Individuals are different in hw they react t anxiety. Sme bury their heads in the sand and ignre the munting sense f anxiety that seems t ccupy the sciety. Others are in a watchful state and can’t get enugh f the up-t-the-minute news and scial media feeds.
Martin Buber nce stated that we related t three things arund us: nature, ur fellw men, and hw yu view the wrld. When we are in a burdened (忧虑的) state, we tend t take n ntice f any f these. When we becme unburdened frm ur depressed selves, we are able t discver the delights and wnders arund and experience a deep sense f thankfulness.
At a time when news reprts are nly a click away, peple’s anxiety becmes extreme. Because f 24/7 media, the internatinal and the interpersnal have integrated in a way that we have never seen befre. It seems that we’ve lst the ability t maintain ur inner peace—and that’s nt just a matter f having ppsing views abut issues. It’s a matter f nt having the patience t invlve in delightful cmmunicatin and t hear each ther. Changing the situatin can’t be achieved vernight. It’s nt accidental, which must be apprached with strength. It cmes frm the effrts t btain understanding and calm.
Our age f anxiety presents us with challenges. But ut f adversity cmes pprtunity. Never can we maintain calm and experience thankfulness at a time when we are burdened, wrried, and anxius. Like anything else, relaxatin and calm take a bit f wrk. Attempt t limit yur expsure t updates n the news and take a cuple f mments t cunt yur blessings—including the peple in yur life and the frtune frm which yu’ve benefited. As yu may realize, it is taking things fr granted that rbs yu f the fruits f yur labr. Praying fr gdness and planting seeds f gratitude may be ur nly way ut.

It is universally believed that the destructin and disappearance f cral reefs (珊瑚礁), essential parts f the cean ecsystem that supprt great bidiversity, bring abslutely n benefit but nly serius harm t the envirnment. In fact, scientists have fund that their lss and damage culd mean ceans can absrb mre CO2, slwing the buildup f this greenhuse gas in the atmsphere.
“It is a beneficial effect if yu nly care abut the cncentratin f CO2 in the atmsphere,” says Lester Kwiatkwski at Srbnne University in Paris, France. But their reductin is harmful fr bidiversity and leaves casts expsed t rising seas, he says.
Hw much the wrld will warm depends mainly n the level f CO2 in the atmsphere. S far, the land and ceans have absrbed arund half f the extra CO2 we have emitted. A ppular belief is that crals remve CO2 frm seawater as they grw their structures. Actually, the prcess, called calcificatin (钙化), is a net surce f CO2, adding mre CO2 than it remves. Observatins als suggest rising seawater temperatures and ceans’ absrptin f CO2 are causing cral reefs’ bleaching (白化) and die-ffs, s their release f CO2 is reduced.
Kwiatkwski and his team tk published estimates f hw crals will be affected by warming and absrbed CO2 in ceans and used a cmputer mdel t wrk ut hw this might change cean carbn absrptin in varius situatins. They cnclude that the ceans culd take up between 1% and 5% mre carbn by 2100, and up t 13% mre by 2300. But the precnditin f the study is that crals aren’t able t adapt t the new envirnment, says Chris jury at the University f Hawaii at Mana. If Kwiatkwski’s team is crrect, the amunt f the carbn budget, which will lead t a given level f warming, is a little larger than currently thught.
“I think we wuld like ur budgets t be as accurate as pssible, even if we’re blwing thrugh them,” says Kwiatkwski.
      28. Hw des the authr intrduce the tpic?
      A. Listing envirnmental benefits.B. Describing cral reef ecsystems.
      C. Explaining cral decline prcesses.D. Shwing a cntrast between beliefs.

      B. Ocean CO2 levels can be reduced by them.
      C. Climate has a very clse link t cral reefs.
      D. Cral reefs prevent the rising f sea levels.
      30. Why des the research need t be imprved?
      A. It predicts smaller carbn budgets.B. It ignres crals’ adaptatin ability.
      C. It uses unprven cmputer mdels.D. It cncludes carbn uptake increase.

Artificial intelligence can take dwn mre than rutine emails. It has nw written tiny wrking genmes (基因组). Researchers reprt in a paper psted t biRxiv.rg., tw AI mdels designed the blueprints fr 16 viruses capable f attacking Escherichia cli (大肠杆菌) in lab dishes.
Given that AI mdels have already been used t design individual genes and prteins, Brian Hie, a cmputatinal bilgist at Stanfrd University and the Arc Institute in Pal Alt, Calif. turned t their wn AI mdels, called Ev 1 and Ev 2, t see if they culd create genmes fr bacteria-killing viruses. The mdels were trained n billins f pairs f the genetic alphabet’s basic units, A, C, G and T’s, frm phage genmes the way ChatGPT was trained n nvels and Internet psts. The team used a phage (噬菌体) called ΦX174—which in 1977 became the first DNA-based genme ever sequenced—as a guide t help the AI design a similar genme.
Ev 1 and Ev 2 generated rughly 300 ptential phage genmes. Of thse, 16 prduced viable viruses. Sme f the phages even killed E. cli mre quickly than ΦX174 did. And althugh ΦX174 culdn’t kill phage-resistant E. cli n its wn, mixture f AI-generated phages rapidly evlved t vercme the bacteria’s resistance t infectin. The findings suggest that AI culd help researchers develp viruses t use in phage therapy, a ptential ptin t treat micrbial (微生物的) infectins.
Scientists are still debating whether viruses are alive r nt. “While there’s a lt f wrk t g, using AI t design living rganisms is a step frward”, says Kimberly Davis, a micrbilgist at Jhns Hpkins Blmberg Schl f Public Health wh wasn’t invlved in the wrk. “It is very likely t be used in the micrbial manufacturing prcesses such as cultivating micrbes that degrade plastic.”
      32. What can be inferred abut Ev 1 and Ev 2 in paragraph 2?
      A. They designed desirable genmes.
      B. They created DNA-based genmes.
      C. They guided ΦX174 t design phage genmes.
      D. They shared the same training methd as ChatGPT.
      33. What des the underlined wrd “viable” in paragraph 3 mean?
      A. Wrkable.B. Infectius.C. DeadlyD. inferir.
      34. What des Kimberly Davis’s wrds suggest?
      A. Ptential applicatin f the findings.B. Need t invlve mre researches.
      C. Methds f designing rganisms.D. Pssible directin fr further study.
      35. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
      A. Escherichia cli: phage-resistant bacteria.
      B. AI-generated genme: a tiny bacteria killer.
      C. AI-designed phages: a DNA-based genme.
      D. Ev 1 and Ev 2: phage genme generatrs.

In frnt f the theater were a grup f bikers — clustered arund their heavy mtrcycles. They were all large men dressed in leather vests. One in particular, a muntain f a man with a thick beard and a scar abve his eyebrw, was laughing ludly at smething, his vice rugh and eching in the quiet street.
I’ve knwn lts f mtrcycle enthusiasts and mst are nice peple. Hwever, in this case, I was a wman all alne, in a strange neighbrhd, at night, and this rugh-lking crwd — all wearing insignia (徽章) that indicated they were in sme srt f club — standing befre me. Warning bells began t sund in my head, and my heart was punding. Was I at the right theater? Had I misread the date f the event?
A sign utside the theater tld me that I was in the right place n the right evening. Nevertheless, I wndered if I shuld rush back t my htel instead f walking thrugh that crwd f bikers. The thught f squeezing past them, f drawing their attentin, made my palms sweat. I finally decided that I wuld be safer inside the theater. Hpefully, the bikers wuld have gne away by the time the film was ver.
