Understanding a simple-lking sentence like “I read this article yesterday” actually requires cmplex
cmputatin (计 算 ): a subject (“I”) perfrmed an actin (“read”) n an bject (“article”) at a specific time
(“yesterday”). But the human brain rutinely des this wrk nearly instantly based n grammatical rules, says
linguist Andrea E. Martin. His team has nw fund that the brain accmmdates grammatical differences acrss
languages by adjusting hw it prcesses each sentence.
Fr a recent study in PLOS Bilgy, the researchers bserved variatins in Dutch-speaking participants’ brain
waves while they listened t a Dutch audibk. T visualize these changes, the scientists used a metric (衡量标准)
quantifying hw many new“predictins” the brain makes f wrds that culd cme next. This framewrk was then
tested against three different parsing (句法分析的) strategies that illustrate hw the brain builds infrmatin ver
      time.
Previus English-based studies cncluded in favr f a mdel where listeners “wait and see” hw each phrase
      ends befre interpreting it. But the Dutch speakers in Martin’s study leaned strngly tward a predictive mdel;
participants tended t finish each phrase in their head befre it was cmplete. A third mdel, in which listeners wait
fr all phrases befre interpreting any part, is seldm used in either language.
In Dutch, verbs smetimes cme near the end f a sentence, explains study authr Cas W. Cpmans. Fr
instance, “because I ate a ckie with chclate” in Dutch wuld be “because I a ckie with chclate ate”.
Listeners wuld have t wait lng fr the verb, s predictive prcessing becmes mre natural. Neither strategy is
“better r wrse”, Cpmans adds. It is simply suited t the prperties f each language.
The findings supprt the need fr mre diversity in linguistic mdels, says Jixing Li, a linguist at City
University f Hng Kng. If studies are dne nly in English speakers, crucial differences will be missed.
Diversifying research, Martin says, will help capture hw the brain understands the structured meaning and scial
      utility f language.
      28. What des Martin’s team discver abut the brain?
      A. It interprets wrds randmly.
      第 12页/共 28页
      B. It adapts t grammar rules.
      C. It favrs grammatical changes.
      D. It ignres sentence structures.

      A. Waiting fr full phrases.
      B. Predicting phrase endings.
      C. Ignring verb psitins.
      D. Fllwing English strategies.
      30. Why is predictive prcessing natural fr Dutch?
      A. Its verbs ccasinally appear late.
      B. It has simpler grammatical rules.
      C. It uses cmmn vcabulary.
      D. Its sentences are generally lnger.
      31. What d the findings stress?
      A. English is the best study language.
