On a calm mrning in August 2025, artist Sam Shemaker pushed his kayak (皮艇) int the waters near Catalina Island, Califrnia. His missin was t paddle (划桨) mre than 26 miles acrss the pen sea t San Pedr. What made the challenge extrardinary was nt the distance but the bat itself — his kayak was grwn entirely frm mushrms.
The bat, brwnish-yellw and rugh, had taken Shemaker nearly a year t create. He grew mycelium (菌丝) in a frame filled with plant fiber. After weeks f grwth and mnths f drying, it became a strng and flating material. Althugh heavier and slwer than a nrmal kayak, it was still gd enugh fr his test.
The cean sn shwed its pwer. After paddling nine miles, seasickness struck, and the castline remained invisible. Then, t Shemaker’s astnishment, a 50-ft whale surfaced and swam beside him fr three miles. Instead f fear, Shemaker felt awe. “It was just a strange experience,” he recalled. Twelve exhausting hurs later, he stepped nt shre, his mushrm kayak still safe, welcmed by friends and family.
Fr Shemaker, the jurney was mre than a persnal win. It prves that mushrms might help slve ne f humanity’s greatest prblems: plastic pllutin. His teacher and guide, Phil Rss, named the new material “AquaFung”, praising its lightness, ability t flat, and its feature t break dwn naturally. Unlike plastic, it disappears ver time, leaving n harmful mark.
Yet Shemaker admits the limits. Building ne kayak required enrmus time and resurces. “It is nt,” he says, “a perfect answer.” But it is a visin f what culd be. If mushrms can becme kayaks tday, perhaps tmrrw they may shape surfbards, flating markers, r even flating huses.
Shemaker’s crssing therefre carries a deeper message: innvatin ften begins with a single bld step. His mushrm vyage reminds us that the future may grw—nt frm factries—but frm the living netwrks beneath ur feet.
      24. What set Shemaker’s jurney apart?
      A. The lng distance acrss the pen sea.B. The material his bat was made f.
      C. The dangerus sea cnditins facing him.D. The advanced technlgy he emplyed.

The deep blue waters f Lake Tahe have lng captured peple’s imaginatin. Stretching acrss Califrnia and Nevada, the lake draws millins f visitrs each year fr its beauty and clear waters. Yet behind the breathtaking views lie mysteries, legends and grwing wrries fr its future.
Stries f “Tahe Tessie”, a mysterius lake creature, have fascinated turists fr decades. Recently, hwever, thusands f viewers witnessed smething far mre real: a livestream (直播) f a dive t Tahe’s flr, mre than 1,500 feet dwn. Using a rbt-perated machine (ROV) called Deep Emerald — nicknamed Emmy, scientists guided audiences thrugh a rare underwater trip.
The ROV was a small but strng machine. Equipped with a small engine, bright lights and a super clear camera, and cupled t land by a cable, Emmy mved dwnward like an explrer frm anther wrld. Thrughut a span f clse t 30 minutes, the livestream scrutinized every mment f its jurney dwnward. As Emmy tuched the lake bttm, dirt flated up and drifted acrss the screen, shining like tiny stars scattered in a dark sky. The quiet f the deep gave the scene a dreamlike feeling.
While Emmy mved alng the bttm, experts explained the lake’s secrets. Tahe, ne f the ldest lakes in Nrth America, frmed tw t three millin years ag. Like human lungs, its depths clean and recycle material frm the surrunding land, keeping the ecsystem alive. Strange plant beds grw in the darkness, feeding small creatures that in turn supprt fish.
Althugh sme had expected scary discveries, the livestream shwed nly natural scenes and the ccasinal dd thing, like tires r a balln that lked fresh. Still, the dive reminded viewers f the prblems Lake Tahe faces. After the 2023 Independence Day hliday, helpers remved mre than three tns f trash frm its waters.
Organizers hpe the livestream encurages visitrs t care fr Tahe’s health. As ne envirnmental leader said, “Take a little piece f Tahe hme with yu — but leave the lake as clean as yu fund it. That way, future generatins can share in its beauty.”
      28. What did the livestream mainly present fr viewers?
      A. Mysteries f cean creatures.B. Evidence f Tahe Tessie’s existence.
      C. The underwater view f the lake.D. The ptential f using a rbt in diving.
      29. What des the underlined wrd “scrutinized” in paragraph 3 prbably mean?
      A. Predicted.B. Explained.C. Repeated.D. Tracked.
      30. What functin d Tahe’s depths mainly serve?
      A. They sustain the ecsystem.
      B. They shelter sme dd creatures.
      C. They make the water temperature stable.
      D. They keep the trapped items in their riginal state.
      31. Why did rganizers cnduct the livestream?
      A. T call fr effrts t prtect the lake.
      B. T prmte Tahe as a turist destinatin.
      C. T prtest against further lake develpment.
      D. T prvide a practical way fr lake explratin.

Hydrgen (氢) fuel cells make electricity by cmbining hydrgen and xygen, and the nly prduct is water. They start fast, wrk efficiently, and prduce zer emissins. Hwever, mst fuel cells still depend n platinum(a chemical element) as the catalyst (催化剂). Platinum is rare and very expensive, s large-scale use is difficult.
A team f Chinese scientists has ffered a strng slutin. Their study, published in Nature, shws that an irn-based catalyst can d the jb while using far less platinum. The team, led by Prf. Dan Wang and Prf. Zhang Sujiang, designed a structure they call “inner activatin, uter prtectin”. The active irn atms sit inside tiny hllw (中空的) shells, while a hard carbn layer utside prtects them.
Think f each particle (颗粒) like a set f nested shells. The irn atms are fixed n the inner curved surface. The uter carbn shell keeps the particle stable. This setup makes xygen pieces escape mre easily, s the reactin runs faster. It als blcks harsh chemicals that wuld damage the catalyst ver time.
Tests supprt the design: the irn atms are in the right places and stay steady during use. Cmputer mdels explain why it wrks — the uter layer gently pushes away xygen pieces, s they dn’t stick t tightly t the irn inside.
The perfrmance is impressive fr a catalyst withut platinum. The fuel cell lses less energy, prduces less f a harmful xygen-based chemical, and stays active fr a lng time. It reached abut 0.75 W/cm2 and kept abut 86% f its activity after ver 300 hurs.
This Chinese breakthrugh matters. Firstly, it lwers csts and eases pressure n rare-metal supply chains by replacing much platinum with irn. Besides, the simple “inner activatin, uter prtectin” rule can guide new catalysts fr fuel cells, and metal-air batteries. Mrever, lnger-lasting parts lwer csts fr backup pwer, helping clean technlgy grw faster. In shrt, smart atmic design frm China ffers a practical path tward cleaner air, strnger energy security, and prgress tward climate gals.
      32. What prblem des the study mainly target?
A The limited applicatin f platinum.B. The danger f string hydrgen.
      C. The cstly reliance n platinum.D. The slw start f fuel cells.
      33. Hw des the authr develp paragraph 3?
      A. By explaining the wrking principle.B. By evidencing the benefits f platinum.
C By detailing the prcedure f the research.D. By distinguishing irn atms and the carbn layer.
      34. What is the significance f the study?
A It makes metal-air batteries available.B. It prmises a greener energy future.
      C. It helps cut csts f irn-based catalysts.D. It remves the cncern abut energy security.
      35. What wuld be the best title fr the text?
      A. Metal-Air Batteries: The Next Hit
      B. Irn Over Platinum: China’s Breakthrugh
      C. Why Fuel Cells Becme Vital t Achieving Climate Gals
      D. Hw an Innvative Structure Replaces Traditinal Fuel Cells

A few days ag, I had an awesme train jurney that started with a happy invitatin. One f my best friends called frm Chittagng, excited t invite me t his elder sister’s wedding — an ccasin I didn’t want t miss. I quickly asked tw ther clse friends t jin, and we all agreed taking the train was the best chice.
On the departure day, we met up early and waited anxiusly at the train statin. Barding felt like a small adventure, and this trip felt extra special because I had rarely gt t travel with friends. After a quick, friendly chat, I managed t get the windw seat I’d hped fr. We’d packed hearty lunch bxes fr the lng ride — filled with rice, spicy curries, and hmemade sweets.
Lking ut the windw, I drank in my cuntry’s rich green scenery. Chittagng’s rute is knwn fr its charm, with winding hilly tracks that curve thrugh dense frests and narrw rads clinging t hillsides, adding a tuch f adventure. I fund myself leaning clser t the glass, nt wanting t miss a single mment. As we neared Chittagng, the train slwed dwn. But then, a sudden jlt (颠簸) made us almst lse ur balance, and the train stpped in a dense green area surrunded by tall trees.
Then an annuncement came thrugh the speaker, saying a technical fault up ahead wuld cause a shrt delay, but the staff were wrking t fix it quickly. S we spread ut ur lunch and shared it with an elderly cuple sitting acrss frm us. Just as we laughed ut lud at ne f their stries, the ld man suddenly frze, clutching (紧抓) his chest tightly with bth hands. His face turned pale, and he started gasping (喘息) fr breath, unable t speak. His wife let ut a panicked cry, tears streaming dwn her cheeks as she shk his arm, begging him t stay awake. Panic washed ver ur little grup as we realized there was n first-aid kit n the train, and the cnductr had mentined earlier that the nearest hspital was miles away — with n easy way t reach it immediately.

Luckily, the train started again and reached the next statin in time.
