While walking in the wds near my hme n Cape Cd, I encuntered an elderly man named Mrris. Seeing me in a neck brace and using a walking stick, he asked if it was hard fr me t get arund. I admitted that the greater bstacle ften lay nt in my physical limits, but in my wn mind — hesitatin befre taking actin. Mrris listened thughtfully and said the three magical wrds I nw say t myself nearly every day: “Just shw up.”
Thse wrds stayed with me. I applied them whenever excuses arse, whether fr exercise r discuraging tasks. My husband Bb embraced the philsphy t, finding it effective in vercming prcrastinatin (拖延).
Then, a real test came. Kelvin and Amy frm the Cape Cd Challenger Club invited me t be the pening day speaker and thrw the first pitch at a baseball game fr disabled yuth. As smene with a prfund fear f public speaking, the invitatin filled me with terrr. Yet, inspired by Mrris’s wisdm, I chse t “just shw up.”
On the event day, anxiety weighed heavily n me. My speech was far frm perfect — I stammered (口吃) and even went blank twice. Instead f masking my fear, I spke frm the heart: “Winning desn’t matter. Being scared desn’t matter. The nly thing that matters is that we try!”
Then came the pitch. With the enthusiastic assistance f several children — all facing their wn challenges — I steadied myself. Tgether, we held the ball, and with their supprt, I threw it frward as everyne cheered, “PLAY BALL!”
In that mment, I understd deeply: it didn’t matter if I stumbled r struggled with wrds. What mattered was shwing up — fr the children, fr their caregivers, and fr myself. Smetimes, the bravest thing we can d is simply be there and try.

Writing this week in Nature Cmmunicatins, researchers at the University f Illinis Urbana utlined a strategy fr taking extra fd waste, transfrming it int bifuel, and then “upgrading” that fuel int jet fuel that can g straight int a plane withut requiring additinal changes t the aircraft’s structure. They cmpared their fd-waste-prduced fuel against industry benchmarks and fund that it met all the necessary standards fr cnventinal jet fuel. These findings pen up the pssibility f using fd waste t help the aviatin industry mve clser t its gal f achieving net-zer carbn emissins.
“In a linear ecnmy, we just prduce smething, use it, and thrw it away. In this prject, we take the waste and recver the energy and materials t make a usable prduct. This fills a missing link in the circular ecnmy,” University f Illinis Urbana prfessr and crrespnding authr Yuanhui Zhang said in a statement.
In this new experiment, the team started by cllecting fd waste frm nearby fd-prcessing plants. They then used a chemical prcess called hydrthermal liquefactin (HTL) (水热液化), which essentially cpies the way the Earth naturally creates crude il (原油) frm rganic matter ver millins f years, except withut all the waiting.
With plenty f crude il extracted frm the fd waste, the researchers then set ut t transfrm it int jet fuel thrugh a tw-part prcess. The first step invlved remving salt, ash, water, and ther impurities. After that, they used a cleaning prcess t get rid f ther undesirable elements such as nitrgen and xygen. What remained were the specific hydrcarbns (碳氢化合物) required t make jet fuel.
The findings are a first step t shw aviatin fuel prduced frm fd waste is at least pssible. Actually making enugh f it t supply an entire passenger jet, hwever, is anther beast altgether. Scaling up at this level requires time, resurces, and deep pckets utside f academia. “Our research helps slve the science and engineering prblems, and then the industry can step in,” Zhang said.
      8. What d the researchers find abut the fd-waste jet fuel?
      A. It may cntribute t sustainability.B. It csts mre than traditinal fuel.
      C. It needs aircraft structure changes.D. It addresses the fd waste prblem.
      9. What is the crrect prcess f prducing jet fuel frm fd waste?
① get rid f undesirable elements
      ② btain hydrcarbns
      ③ get crude il
      ④ remve impurities
      A. ④①③②B. ③①②④C. ②①③④D. ③④①②
      10. What might the authr cntinue talking abut?
      A. Explanatin f the HTL prcess.
      B. Methds f fd waste cllectin.
      C. Mass prductin f the new jet fuel.
      D. Advantages f bifuel ver crude il.
      11. What culd be the best title fr the passage?
      A. Frm Waste t WingsB. Clean Fuel, Clean Earth
      C. Hidden Pwer f Fd WasteD. The Key t Fuel frm Waste
