      Determined t save the building, el-Habashi bught it in 2009.Then he spent ten years restring the huse which he named Bayt Yakan and tried t turn it int a cmmunity space.
      Tday, its beautifully restred curtyard, with lvely flwers grwing under the wden latticed (装有格栅的) windws, hsts many lcally led cmmunity activities prmting heritage preservatin.
      Such curtyards played “a key scial and ecnmic rle” as cmmunity centers, el-Habashi said, a rle he wrked hard t revive.
      E-Habashi said there were nce arund 600 histric huses with similar curtyards — all built facing nrthwest t catch the cl wind — but just 24 are prtected as heritage sites. “As fr the rest f them, thse that are still standing, wh knws what state they are in?” he said. “Every day, anther ne gets pulled dwn. The lss f such heritage wuld be irreparable.”

      I was taken t La Escbilla t experience Wildcast in actin. This prtected beach, ne hur nrth f Huatulc, is where mass turtle nesting happens, lasting just fur days during rainy seasn, hundreds f thusands f female sea turtles swinging their way ashre t lay their eggs.
      Between threats f dgs, crabs, develpment and il spills, the little creatures have the whle wrld against them. As recently as 2002, turtles hunting was nt nly a cmmn practice, but an imprtant part f the culture and diet in the Oaxaca cmmunities. Luckily, Wildcast rescues turtle eggs and recreates habitats by mnitring temperatures and humidity. Thanks t their effrts, the sea turtles have made a majr cmeback, with nw ver 72 millin turtles being brn n the beaches that Wildcast prtects.
